All about the money and pushing people into their Go Loud & Cash Machine. Christmas FM has been part of Ireland for 10 plus years and raised a ton of money for charity. So they are well established. If Bauer pick up a little more traffic thats a win.
Irish commercial radio is only annoyed it didnt come up with the idea first, which was basically robbed from a station in NY that play xmas music from October.
Christmas FM has been on the go since 2008, now 16 years, making this year's run the 17th! It has become something of an institution at this stage. It is also online most of the year with various live broadcasts before the FM run. I don't think the GoLoud Christmas station will make much inroads.
The very one. Pukefest.
Or you can Cornetto me all day long.
I have no idea why they think that ad would attract listeners. Ugh.
Its incredibly cringe/creepy.
The live dj element and shout outs that they do on Christmas FM will always beat a recorded loop on Bauer Xmas channel.
All day long, Bauer Xmas channel is essentially a playlist, if I wanted to listen to a Christmas playlist I'll stick to Spotify.
There's a painful promo of Dave talking to some fella called Robbie about a haircut. Was it just a caller he was talking to or was it a celebrity?
Just a caller. Dave asked listeners to phone in with their embarrassing stories and he licked a hairdresser's finger
Everyone's a legend and every song is an "absolute tune" to our Dave. It's tiresome
I can't listen to him on his own, it's a completely different show to what D&D was.
Every single film is "brilliant", "a classic", "mega", particularly when they go to the premier, or interview the stars. No Dave, some of them are shite…..It was the same as D&D, in fairness.
mention of late night love reminds me of how trends go in radio down the years. I dont know what radio station decided on a late night love show (usually at 10/11pm) but it didn't take long for nearly all of the commercial stations back in the 90's to have one. they seems to have died out now (TippFM still had one on friday nights last year).
Another trend around the time that the first licenses were handed out was "classic" radio - hits of the 50-60-70s. Indeed the whole of Classic Hits 98fm was based on it, but every station had a show (usually on a sunday late morning/early afternoon slot) for one. All gone now i believe outside of a few spots locally and "yesterday fm" but that is far from hours of songs no less than 20/30 years old. Perhaps a sign of the shifting demographics from the launch times of the licensed stations (who of course took it from successful pirate shows).
Another trend that seems to have had its day is the Saturday filler "Best of…" a weekday show (very best of the last word, best of the Gerry Ryan Show etc) all of which seemed to flood the airwaves, keep going for about 10/15 years and which have now evaporated.
A current trend is the "top 40 in Irish/bilingual" that i think started on one of the spins and then spread to many stations. How long will it last, it seems these trends last about 10 years or so.
Any other trends ?
everyone had a ‘better music mix’ at one stage. Or ‘a better variety’! Phrases only radio people would ever use
"For 150 grand I'll Cornetto you all day long." STFU already
100%. I used to tune in regularly to D&D. Its weird because back then, any time either Dermot or Dave were off, the show was still OK, it was listenable. Dave's current show is nothing like D&D when it was just Dave with Dermot on holidays. It's really hard to listen to now imo.

Well… technically, that's exactly what Block Rockin' Beats is… :-)
I haven't listened really since Dermot left, but when he was away before, Maria, Sean and Cathal seemed to step in and it wasn't as noticeable. Dave on his own is torture.
I heard Dave mention the name Cathal in a recent interview as well. Is that Cathal Funge, former presenter with the now defunct Phantom FM/TXFM and who occasionally presented rock-oriented shows on Today FM?
No, it isn't.
No, Cathal Minogue. Part of Dave's team. Does a bit on Red FM too
That and 'I'm a loop the loop girlo' doesn't in anyway make me want to tune in for more.
In fact, I immediately switch over to the other Louise at midday for an eclectic mix of tunes, which is exactly what I want occasionally.
Cantillon's show is a dud. Dave is hit and miss, but I do enjoy some of the interaction. The car noises were good this week.
The balance is certainly missing now Dermot was gone. Dave was always the excited OTT man-child (which is fun to a point) but cool and chilled Dermot was definitely ying to Dave's yang.
Cantillon's show is fine but she has the worst set of promos of any show in recent memory.
Whoever works on the promos for shows on Today FM needs to be reassigned to another role. The promos for Louise's show and Dave's shows are actively off-putting and in no way encourage me to tune in to either show.
Dave's laughing is very grating, his whole on air personality is incredibly one dimensional
Its happened, I can no longer endure his show. Had a goddawful segment on tv quiz shows yesterday and is just too cheerful around Christmas. We get it you LOVE Christmas.
Local radio for me now after Ian.
Fairytale of New York just came on. "Ok Google, radio off!" 🤣
did Matt do his end of year gadget review yet?
