The no rag worth is appealing alright enough summers pulling the rotten yokes at home
It would, plenty of horned sheep there normally.
let the rams off today . Never saw the ewes in such good condition. Have put allot of time and money into increasing mineral this year and it seems to be paying off.
Getting very tight in grass now is the only problem.
I let some sheep into a field of grass that's gotten too far ahead of them. It's a run of ground from a beef farmer. It's old pasture but with plenty of clover coming through.
I read somewhere about a lick that was good for producing extra saliva for sheep. Helps them break down the starches in the grass.
Anyone ever heard of this, or know the name of it. TIA
Are horned lambs after becoming a thing of the past? We've being buying blackfaced horned ewe lambs from the west the last few years but struggling to get them this year, practically nothing on donedeal only a handful of lads selling max of 10 and we've contacted marts too and they've said the same that the selection ain't there this year. Are all the hill men running terminal rams now or is it due to the big losses in the spring?
I'd say it's a number of factors . I'm keeping on any horned lambs I have this year.
With 25 euro a head they'll be easier kept than lowland stock. So instead of cutting back numbers, I'll just keep numbers up, but with an easier managed flock 🤞🤞, hopefully 😜
Then you have small crops last year due to weather
interesting one. we’re breeding Cheviot rams with our horny ewes the last few years surely. there are still big flocks around us breeding horny lambs but they seem to be selling into co-ops or producer groups instead of going to marts/selling privately. Ballina mart would still see a fair shot of horny lambs, although as you say, maybe less than in the past
Whats's the story again where a ewe looses both ear tags and you don't know her original tag number. Have you to order special tags or just use the next ones from the pack?
Next ones from your pack
Thanks. What do you put in the flock register.
I wouldn't put anything - it will be documented the day you sell her in the register and dispatch book.
Ok, thanks.
You can put 'R' for re-tag and leave the old tag number blank.
I would always re-tag a few and never have the old tag number
Thanks.
What marking spray or paint do people find best for long term marking of sheep going to the hill?
Declan Miley did well with his reduction sale today. he got €11000 for one ewe and €10000 for her mother.
He must have a nice lump of money this evening as there was a lot of good prices
Great to see
There's one starts with a c. I think coynes that lasts seriously long. I sheared a hogget in the summer and could make out her lambing number
Was thinking of making up a few hurdles here from 4x2 I have here. Made some before and used wall plate straps for hooks at the end for a drop pin.
Wondering what other people's suggestions are. The eye on any 'eye screws' I see seem too small/narrow for a drop pin.
Where would I get something suitable. TIA
Galvo band maybe?
Tried that before. Very light and folds in on itself
Seems to once again be a mass shortage of heptavac p.
I see 'Tribamec Duo' being mentioned as a good dual Fluke and Worm dose for sheep.I never heard of it before.
Has anyone on here ever used it?
I have a bunch of ewe lambs to dose in the next week or so,gave them Supaverm the last two times dosing and they are in good form but was thinking of changing to a different dual dose for this time around.
So if anyone can recommend 'Tribamec Duo' from personal experience, or another similiar product it would be much appreciated.
generally u don’t used combination ones. I always use straight fluke dose. Can’t comment on it unfortunately
Sheep shepherd in kerry was promoting it on YouTube, used it here in ewe lambs a couple of weeks ago. Dried them up well and good
Looking for Sheep Scanner name and numbers for Galway - preferably east Galway please.
Thanks all
Ewes lambing 2nd week of February, was going to bring in a month from lambing so I'm thinking I'd want to start feeding nuts soon before they come in, anyone recommend a magnesium based nut or ration, Liffeymills, dairygold, kerry, roches?
sent you a PM
How long would a round bale of silage last 60 lambs on 1 Kg of meal in a shed? All near 40 kgs. Thanks
Would they need much magnesium before lambing, Grennans do a very good 'Super Ewe and Lamb ration '
20% Protein and .7% magnesium
