Ridley Scott is working on GLADIATOR 2!

....Ridley Scott, director of the original and numerous other classic films, stating that he is actively working on bringing GLADIATOR 2 to life with the help of screenwriter Peter Craig (THE TOWN) according to a report from Deadline.

The story will apparently focus on Lucius, the young boy from the first film, as an adult. At this time there are no other plot details.

I honestly thought the second trailer was much better and encouraging. I get the feeling there is potentially a good film there being botched by poor marketing.

On that, general question but does anyone know how much input the director has into film trailers?

Because I think we all universally agreed the first trailer was terrible, but hopefully the film isn't going to be. I wonder who made the first trailer

Edit: I realised that's a very googleable question. Seems it's often specialised agencies working with the marketing department, and rarely the film's director

I'd be surprised if the likes of Nolan didn't have a say in his trailers. The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar, Tenet etc....the marketing gave very little away and I feel that comes from the director.

I would have thought Ridley had similar power.

For me, Mescal is this generation's Colin Farrell. His casting is less about any ability he may or may not have and a lot more to do with the fact he is flavour of the month and his affect on the female heart rate. Granted, that was partly Crowe's appeal 25 years ago, but he was clearly a more interesting choice and an actor who went onto have a much more varied and successful career than Farrell. He brought a depth to Maximus that many wouldn't have managed.

This has all the hallmarks of yet another cash grab sequel. The lifting of memorable shots and camera angles, setpieces and even actual lines from the script of Gladiator in order to hammer the audience on the head with "HEY YOU LOVED THE FIRST FILM, THIS IS MORE OF THAT" - Just F**k off.

I know it's too much to ask for original stories in Hollywood blockbusters today, but the fact they are too lazy to even get in a team of writers who can come up with an compelling plot in this universe, says it all. It really is a case of feed the slop to the pigs.

I would reject any suggestion Mescal is getting cast purely on looks alone. He’s obviously a very handsome man, but his heartbreaking, nuanced performance in Aftersun showed without any doubt whatsoever that the man has serious acting chops too. Ditto All of Us Strangers and Normal People. Still have no idea how this one will turn out, but Mescal has earned his big roles.

I disagree. Farrell was billed as a next generation A-lister from the start and he was huge tabloid fodder based on his celeb flings. Mescal is much more low-profile and wouldn't pass the 'does your granny know him?' test at the moment, whereas Farrell was hooking up with Britney and getting on tabloid front pages.

A lot of Farrell's early roles deliberately had him paired next to legends as a kind of box office insurance - if it does well, it's Farrell and if it doesn't, the blame is shared. So he was in one big indie (Tigerland) and then the A-lister co-stars showed up (Harts War - Bruce Willis, The Recruit - Al Pacino, Minority Report - Tom Cruise). When he was somewhat freed up as the main star (SWAT, Phone Booth) he did decent but not spectacular business. He never recovered from Alexandar and Miami Vice flopping and wisely, became the incredible character actor we know today.

Mescal - much like his normal Normal People co-star Daisy Edgar Jones - has went from that big breakthrough to earning indie kudos and now, is making his blockbuster audition (much like Daisy did with Twisters this summer). He has, however, gone down the Farrell route a little in that he has a huge co-star in Denzel to provide a little insurance. If Gladiator 2 does well, it'll be interesting to see if Mescal is then allowed his own big movies/franchises or if he'll be paired with a few other stars first.

I dont think "universe" is exclusive to Marvel or any set of interconnected films. Crowe himself has stated he's fed up answering questions about the plot of Gladiator 2 because in that universe (his words) his character is dead and he has nothing to do with it anymore.

Watched a trailer for this on the big screen before Smile 2. It looked fairly decent. Cautiously optimistic but we shall see.

Ridley might have the clout but whether he gives a monkeys about how trailers portray his (frequently great) films the way someone like Nolan might, I doubt. I get the impression that once it’s in the can, it’s about bums on seats with him. Similar to his attitude to historical inaccuracy criticism…. ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!😎

The word being spread on the wires from pre-release screenings in the last few days is generally very positive though that can be misleading/marketing-led. But mentions of a solid story line would give a little hope
