Back in the late 2000's and early 2010's Bill Cullen use to be on the TV all the time but now you never see him on TV anymore.
It's like hes been "cancelled".
Where you there? The Gleneagle Hotel Oct 2004? Did you hear him say something different ? Because if you were not and didn't hear what he did or did not say. Then you have no idea how seletive I am being with a quote.
The employer might not have the money to pay you. this was in a bad recession.
Kevin Myers, Olivia Treacy and Gerald Keane all seemed to be all over RTE the Indo etc. onetime but aren't heard from anymore. Seems to happen to some for whatever reason.
No, if you are working for someone you deserve payment for your labour.
You are being very selective on the quote.
The concept was that if you were out of a job, then rather than be sitting doing nothing, offer yourself to places for free.
The idea was that if you are working it is easier to get a new job than if you are unemployed.
My brother in law was a senior manager in finance. He worked for me in 2010 in a warehouse packing boxes. He was paid minimum wage.
But he didn't.
Ive read Penny Apples and I couldn't stop laughing about how he wrote about himself in the third person. Some self aggrandizing rubbish. I cannot remember if I thought it was ghost written or not. I assume it was ghost written.
To be fair to Bill, he was is a great networker and sales man. But he isn't exactly Phil Knight or Bill Gates.
I meant him working for other people, when he was young starting out.
Not really. if they were just out of college, no jobs available for unexperienced employees, living at home. Were they not better off work for free for a year and get experience? or sit at home twiddling their thumbs?
Yes, while working for himself. Not working for other people.
I didn't like him. He was a bluffer. He made the assumption that a lot of wealthy people make, their superior intellect/work ethic/character, is what made them wealthy. In reality it's usually down to family wealth (not Bill's case) or luck (Bill's case).
Listening to him telling young people to work for free "to get a foot in the door" was so out of touch with reality.
His friend, the late Pino Harris set that up for him after his other businesses failed
In fairness Bill would have worked for free if he had to and probably cut the 4 hours sleep to 1.
Yes, I remember my workplace hiring him a few time. "Yiz, have plenty of time to sleep when you are dead". He claimed he used to work until midnight on Christmas eve and go into the office on Christmas day if he had to.
Other guff like beating Muhammed Ali in a foot race. Sitting behind the resolute desk in the Oval Office. I didn't belive a word of it.
His partner said people should be willing to work for free during 2008 depression. No work for equity, not work for delayed pay. Work for free.
Whatever about the butter I know the intervention beef as it was called was distributed to charities for giving to good causes, it's years ago now but I knew someone who was on crutches for months after a box of the frozen beef fell on his foot during distribution!
As you can imagine it became a bit of an embarrassing reason every time the question was asked what happened to the foot!
I remember meeting him in the late 90s and thinking he was an awful w&nk3r altogether.
I did like Bill when I met him and his no nonsense attitude, he put in the miles for sure and was in a good place for the boom.
I read Niall Harbissons book too and other biz bio and they all seem to have an addictive personality, all or nothing which they channel into work. Bill defo was in great shape, never drank, he was a great role model for all those schools he visited
I like him and his 2 books. A hard worker and a guy with a positive can do attitude, a very inspirational guy. Pity more aren't like him, but people just want to blame the government for all their problems and don't even try to improve themselves.
Sir/Madam,
Seeing as you do not know, shouldn't you pull this comment or put it right, and be more careful and generous the next time.
Regards, Etc. R.
Yep started out as a used car salesman, Bill Cullen cars, got lucky buying the Renault dealership franchise when it was on it's knees just prior to the Celtic tiger, suddenly was a business guru.
Turned out like a few others he wasn't.
Went broke.
Bill was well off before the Celtic tiger was born.
He was a go getter, wheeler dealer by nature.
If you are lucky enough to reach the age he is now you should hope you won't be judged too harshly.
It didn't stop Trump....
He was citing ill health seven years ago in his legal battles with Danske. That is only likely to have declined further.
His last business was selling Ssangyong cars, not exactly the top of the tree in the industry. Probably better to remember his Legion D'Honneur.
There is loads of things that disappear from the media the that you would wonder about.
For example
What happened to the EU butter mountains or beef mountain or what happened to Nama and some of the dodgy developers there is loads of things like that.
A chancer that did well in the celtic tiger era like so many others.
I remember going to one of his motivation talks in 2006 and buying his book during my visualise it/the secret book years.
He was all about sleeping 4 hours, taking cq10 vitamins, not wasting a minute in the day - nonsense. Looking back he was a workaholic
He finished acquiring his collection of Celtic warriors. No more need for the media now.
Remember someone pitched a thing called the Alcobuddy.
Yes. That’s not bankruptcy.
You need to be careful with words.
