I don’t agree that it’s extremely rare that accused persons testify. Unless you specifically mean accused persons in rape/sexual assault cases. Overall cases I wouldn’t have thought it extremely rare.
Basically any serious crime. No defence solicitor or barrister is willing to risk having their client implicate themselves. Safer to just keep them off the stand.
