Feels like the right time to start a new thread for next year's gigs.
John Mayer playing the 3Arena on 29 March 2024.
I was at Tom Waits in the Olympia too
Saw Rory Gallagher there too
Man, we're getting old.…
If the national stadium made those ringside seats movable, it'd be world class.
Fair enough. I know nothing about Shampain but i have seen the other three acts and wouldn't have thought their combined talents would fill a 1200 capacity venue. Not that i've ever been any good at gauging public interest!
So Opium is a brutal venue by popular vote? Probably one of the few smaller venues I've never been to, I usually prefer the smaller venues for gigs.
Coincidentally I see Fat Dog, who are in the Grand Social tonight, announced this week they're playing in Opium in March.
Popular local DJ who can draw a crowd for a new festival just before Xmas. Not my thing but I like how he mixes in trad with his dance stuff plus he does much stuff as Gaeilge.
It's also the last Saturday (21st Dec) before the holidays when the colleges are closed and some people will already be off work (expect much yapping @Mucker46) plus it's only €26 for five hours of music. I'd pay that for Just Mustard alone. I didn't know Olan Monk but I like what I've just listened to. One Leg One Eye sound like a lesser Lankum. Those two acts decent live @Dreamweapon? We thus have dance beats, neo-trad, shoegaze and exxperimental electronica. It's VERY eclectic with more to come and I'll definitely give it a look.
If you're getting nostalgic, SFX as a venue... Saw Counting Crows and Soul Asylum there. And missed soooo many other bands there and in Tivoli mid 90s, as I was too young according to the parents...
Saw Björk, My Blood Valentine & RHCP amount others in the SFX
RHCPs were on the BSSM tour right before Under The Bridge was released as a single n they went stratospheric
Henry Rollins supported and scared the bejaysis out of me!
Great little venue - sadly missed
I've only seen Henry Rollins with him doing hisbtalking shows, he's brilliant. He also replies to emails!
Other nostalgic venues; Olympic Ballroom, Rock Garden, Cathedral Club & McGonagles
Couple of resales for Fat Dog tickets on TM now if anyone is still looking.
Fair point about it being the last Saturday before Christmas, that should push things alright.
Olan Monk just left me bored, but other than knowing that i genuinely can't remember anything about his set! One Leg One Eye is one of the Lankum dudes with some other chap. Laptop and various instruments. Personally i could do without the vocals, which just like Lankum, cause my ears supreme bother. A bit of drone, found sounds and sampled poetry when i saw them. Not bad but could be better imo.
If i was in the vicinity i'd probably take a punt.
I’ve been listening to the support act Mount Palomar for the last couple of days. He has some great pumping tunes. Get there early!
Have seen some great gigs at Opium but with the layout the way it is you just really need to be up the front
Well I was right about him twiddling dials behind a laptop, but Mount Palomar was really good. And loud!
Thanks for the recommendation - very good and DJs not really my thing
I was fully sure I was the only person at that Soul Asylum gig - I've never meet anyone else that was there. It was good - they're actually a great band even if they are the B team.
Fat Dog....I don't really know what to say. Is it good? Maybe. Is it enjoyable? **** yeah.
Mount Palomar deadly too, but weird hearing techno that is more 2am music at 8pm.
All in all it was great, and I'll see them in Opium.
It’s a tough one. They’ve a couple of great tunes but beyond those it sounds like generically quirky indie-dance with the sax from Night Boat to Cairo playing over it. Really lively and fun but I wasn’t fully into it. They’ll be huge at festivals again next Summer but I’m not sure how much there is to them.
A lovely bunch though, very chatty in the outdoor area after their Róísín gig in February. They’d been on the lash all afternoon and had forgotten to eat until Gugai (promoter) forced them to eat a takeaway. All on the Guinness btw. Very polite and friendly and they’d started to realise that people outside Brixton were listening to them. They’ve got the potential, a bit of Fat White Family in there, hope they develop well.
Thinking about favourite venues. I like any venue where you can easily get close to the stage to see the colour of their eyes.
I also like it when they tell you who the support act is.
Htting Bank Lane in Waterford for Villagers tonight. Never been in the venue before but some good stuff starting to get booked there so hope it works well.
Fat Dog were excellent, up front the crowd was wild with everyone getting involved with the moshing and raving.
I'm going to award this thread the Most Improved award this year. Fantastic variety of gigs being discussed these days.
People seeing value in smaller gigs. Great to see.
Enjoy!
Conor was on top form in Castlebar last night.. fantastic set!
You were right about me liking the Grand Social, great venue 🙂
Don't know if it's just me, but it seemed significantly louder than other venues too, my ears are ringing today!
Just a word of warning to anyone heading to Vicar Street tomorrow for They Might Be Giants- there's no support & Vicar Street website says they'll be on about 1 hour after doors open (18:30)
No support! They Might Be Giants' performance starts approximately one hour after doors open.
Last time was the same & was unknown to me and I missed the start.

I thought the vocals were quite harsh at times for Fat Dog. Not a complaint i've ever had in the Grand Social before. I'll blame the singer's mic technique!
Off myself tonight to see They Might be Giants at Mandela Hall (a favourite venue, BTW!). Really looking forward to it, now. Naughty-streaming their new album at work, here. BOOK. It is really very good; very funny! Have a sneaky feeling they will cheer me up. Had a very busy & stressful week on many levels, not just what is happening in the USA. And yes, I was looking online last night, & see that on stage at 200h. I am getting the bus from Derry, so need to be nimble to catch it after work here at the hospital!!
And another iconic & great venue up this way is the Limelight. Seen a good few bands over the years. Way back in the day, saw A House there. Very memorable. More recently, The Charlatans, Jesus & Mary Chain I've seen.
Very good venue and suggest going to 'Katty Barrys' for a pre/post gig pint. It's only around the corner
For anyone going to Villagers tonight, get there early for Conchúr White supporting.
An incredible talent - beautiful songs and voice.. am surprised he's not bigger tbh!
