I think it will be FF/FG again with god knows who. Hopefully a left wing party
It will be November 15th
Anyone notice how the two referenda on 8th March have been completely suppressed in the media recently. Opinion polls stated that they'd both be marginally carried, but no they were roundly rejected
How can a result of referenda be suppressed? I think everyone can recall all the main parties even SF got a bloody nose from that result. But it was a very specific issue.
Are they the referenda that MLMD is going to run again?
And post referendum SF said they wouldn't. By all means be critical but for the purposes of accuracy be complete.
Your claim was that without HTB scheme councils would be snapping up those houses instead - which is false. Councils do not engage in open bidding wars on new builds. They have discussions direct with developers at either pre sales or well post sales if there is anything simply not selling.
HTB is not boosting overall FTB numbers, it just inflated prices and allows one group of FTB to get in ahead of another group who don't have HTB who end up missing out. It is a zero sum game.
Do you have a full list of the Sinn Fein populist u-turns? I had forgotten that one, it can be hard to keep up.
Quite a misjudgement by MLMD that she had to completely reverse her policy.
Yawn
noone cares but you blanch I'm afraid
Are you joking? That result put the fear of god into all of the parties. It had 2 major impacts that I can think of off the top of my head
It definitely shifted the dial of Irish politics ever so slightly away from the cosy NGO-led no-debate consensus. The referenda made all of our major parties sit up and notice that if you want to bring about social change it's not enough to just say "Modern Ireland" and brand all opposition as hate filled anachronistic bigots.
I'm sure they're sitting up and giving great notice, as they slide back into government again.
Simon called it on the 6-1 news. 29th November. Let the games begin.🤣
It was but most parties got those refs wrong. Anyway, good of you to acknowledge your error.
Not sure exactly how this works for a 3 party coalition.
I presume each party would be treated individually
So 2020: FF 22.2%, FG 20.9%, Greens 7.1%
I think both FG and FF can beat their 2020 totals.
Even if it's the 3 of them combined then they could still beat it. On a bad day the Greens will drop back to 3% but that 4% loss could be made up by FG alone.
One of the 3 will take a hammering for sure, i assume it'll be the Greens, FF will do well imo, maybe helped by them serving their time first
No, because every single one of the several articles I've read about SF's vote decline has mentioned their support for these referendums and ML's crazy statement she'd re-run them.
So we can file this under "things that didn't happen"
Don't forget that MLMD has since reversed that position in a u-turn. Everytime I mention that refusal to accept the will of the people, I am reminded that she backed down. Let's be fair to her, it only took her about a month to realise she did something stupid.
I really have no idea why the media keep bigging up Paul Gogarty (remember him? 'F**k you deputy' might jog the memory) in Dublin Mid West. They did it the last two GEs and now they're doing it again.
If there’s a bolter for one of the last seats, former Green TD and now Independent candidate Paul Gogarty could pip other Independents, smaller parties and Fianna Fáil – which is likely to poll respectably but must find transfers to truly come into the reckoning.
Really? He can rustle up just enough votes in Lucan to become a councillor, but he's widely regarded with disdain outside of his home patch and rightly so. Being an ex-Green isn't going to help.
They didn't even mention the second Eoin O'Broin (SD) 🙄 who is in with a real shout imho.
It's now a five-seater but their final prediction only has four seats… sigh.
Mustn't have been a phone call from Belfast this time, they're quick off the mark. Remember when she said that an immediate border poll was a bad idea and then u-turned the very next day?
It really isn't. But we aren't going to agree on this one.
Gogarty is a bit of a goofball for sure but he's a very hard working councillor. His website is great for updates on the local area and he's clearly on top of the local issues.
I emailed him once with a question about something in Lucan once and he sent a really lengthy and informative response in reply.
That's great and all but the rest of the constituency only know him as Mr. 'Fúck you deputy' and an ex-Green, and don't care what he does or doesn't do for Lucan. In fact the more he is focused on Lucan it's a reason for everyone else to NOT vote for him. We're not electing a councillor. If it wasn't for that incident the media wouldn't care about him either.
Who do this crowd think they are? 🙄
Meanwhile, President Higgins has been asked not to dissolve the Dáil by campaigners who want the Occupied Territories Bill to be passed by the Oireachtas. In a letter sent to Áras an Uachtaráin by the Mothers Against Genocide group, the President has been asked to use his presidential powers to keep the Dáil in situ.Spokesperson Clare O'Connor said in the letter: "Our Government has blocked and stalled this bill at every turn. Last week the offer of the opposition's Dáil speaking time to facilitate the enactment of this crucial bill was refused. The International Court of Justice advisory opinion in July makes it very clear that Ireland is compelled to act now."We hope dear President Higgins that you can be the final contributor to getting the Occupied Territories Bill enacted now," she added.

So the President refuses a dissolution, what then? He can't force the Oireachtas to enact anything, and for very good reason.
The only good reason to refuse a dissolution is if, following a loss of confidence, a workable and obvious alternative governing majority exists (like in 1994). Your obscure lobby group's pet project having to wait until after the election doesn't cut it.
I wonder when we will hear about the debates. I imagine FFG will want very few debates - they have too much baggage to defend (Health crisis, Housing crisis, Govt Waste, Transparency etc).
Is Robert Troy (FF) going again? He has gone very quiet.
Yeah, he's running, along with 16 others apparently
I agree they are just being stupid asking the President this
What I am looking forward too is once the new Govt is up and running (assuming it's FF and FG)
What excuse will they use to not get this bill enacted?
Jaysus, the absolute chancer. I thought FF would have ditched him. I should have known.
He also ran in Palmerstown Fonthill in the locals and received 1300 votes. He seems to do a good bit of work related to that area as well.
I don't know why you said "He can rustle up just enough votes in Lucan to become a councillor". He topped the poll and was elected on the first count!
Add to that the fact that he came 6th in 2020, and the strong polls for Independents.
I think he probably won't get a seat but you certainly cannot rule him out of contention.
From what the Government have said, the AG's advice requires significant amendments to the Bill. These will have to go through the Committees and the Seanad, meaning it will take at least six to eight months after a Government is formed, which could take us into 2026 by the time the Bill is enacted. The war could be over, and we mightn't want to do something that might affect the peace.
The Govt (FF/FG) have been stalling on this bill for nearly 7 years now
We know they gave no intention of getting it passed, they have proven that
