regular trip of 250km. 25mpg is 9.5 litres per 100km. 23.75 litres at 1.65 is 39 euro. Doing the same trip in Mrs ELM's ora costs 40kWh @ 13c per kWh and 35kWh @60c per kwh, total of 30 euro approx. Note that the 25mpg is an approximation, as is the Ora's awful highway efficiency. Realistically if I topped 30 MPG I'd be saving in the diesel. Which is crazy, considering less than half the Ora's energy came from public charging.
Of course, in the Tesla, it takes 50kWh approx and that costs 8 euro total at home.
It was an off the cuff remark on my behalf - I'm sure the volvo does better (my lifetime average including towing heavy loads and using it as a tool in the yard to move stuff is still 8.8l/100km) - but I'm surprised it's actually close.
Problem I have is if I leave home and get to a DC charger within 5 minutes, regardless of the power output of the charger, I will be lucky to draw 50kw from it. Stone cold batteries and DC charging don't mix.
I'd like to see a lot more AC chargers around Dublin (and reasonably priced ones at that).
There are quite a few ESB fast chargers popping up in SuperValu car parks but in my experience they are always busy with taxis and if I get there with a cold battery I don't get a huge amount of energy in the 45 minutes before the overstay kicks in.
Yes but they are ridiculously so. The country moves on (predominantly) diesel propelled single occupant vehicles. Cutting the quays etc is just ridiculous and I think traffic would already have been banned if it weren't for the parking building lobby
Random is it? OK, I was in a taxi on Saturday, a VW ID 4, and thought it was very nice, liked a lot about it. I am probably getting an EV next, so should I get one?
TL;DR: VW ID4 good or bad?
Haha, Random EV grumbles might be a better title
I think it's good, but I do own one so I'm probably biased
The refreshed version has a much better screen and software. It's still not perfect but from what other owners have said it's a massive improvement
I've the longer range 77kWh version and I'm pretty confident to drive anywhere in Europe without being worried about range or charging
Feels like a an optional motor tax top up.
Exactly. Tone deaf..
Nobodies forcing you to replace your existing plates, and it won't be a cost for anybody getting a new car where they are ordering new plates anyway.
There's a fair argument for district charging hubs to be multiple 50kW chargers at a supermarket instead of the current 1x200kW+50kW that eCars have rolled out at SuperValus. Hopefully the ePower rollout has learnt that lesson from other countries with similar.
I'm not seeing any point to at all.
Get an ID4 Taxi? definately.
Not entirely seeing the argument for 50 kw in an hour being less advantageous than 7 kw in an hour.
In 7 hours your on the AC charger that 50 kw has charged 7 EV's to 50 kw. The AC charger has only charged one, and 50kw is going to get you a lot further than 7kw.
Price of public charging is a different argument altogether.
If you are doing a lot of public charging on long trips then diesel is a better option. Probably want the range of the diesel anyway. Is anyone buying a ORA for mainly motorway long trips?
What you need is an EV that can do most or all of that trip on your Solar.
The ora was never intended for long trips, its only that the tesla is off the road we're using it by force rather than choice.
It's to illustrate the point that DC public charging is very expensive and even a moderately efficient ICE is less expensive than running an EV on solely public charging
Nope. Doing it on solar is more expensive than charging the car at night and sending solar export to the grid.
Its not called the bleeding edge of technology for nothing.
XC90s are depreciating at 40-50% in 5yrs. Closer to 60% in other markets. So you're not comparing like with like. Also the EV market is new and volatile. Its not going to be as predictable as something that been around for century.
That’s only assuming your start and end point is within the city.
Solar or your cheapest electricity rate same difference. Using the Ora long motorway trips is a bit like complaining a knife isn't a spoon. Anyone (with any sense) using public charging isn't going to be solely using motorway DC chargers. Do (sensible) people solely fill their ICE at expensive motorway stops.
Yeah they're well priced new and used for what they are and loads available, good car but there are others just as good so do look around and what's available.
Nissan Ariya, Hyundai ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 would be honourable mentions for 3 alternatives that I have sat in recently. Not exactly the same body style as the id4 but all just as practical and a little more rare. ID4s are everywhere if that matters to you.
Skoda Enyaq and Audi Q4 are more or less the same car but I don't see a value argument for getting either of them.
I don't think you'll beat ID4 for value
It's hard to think of a new similar ice that wouldn't have cost you 17k in depreciation in the same time frame through so you can't feel too hard done by
I'm not talking about motorway charging, I'm talking about public charging as a whole. Too expensive.
17k/54k is 31 percent loss in 2 years. I agree it's not too bad percentage wise but it goes against the prior observed behavior from 2015 to 2023. I didnt lose money on any other new EV in that time.
Solar cost you between 21c and 24c per kwh so not a free or cheap option unless you're off grid and can't export
It's cheaper than motorway services DC charging.
You said driving to Dublin and fast charging. I doubt you're doing that on backroads and using public AC charging.
Who exactly is advocating getting an EV to use solely on public charging? It's an argument no one is making.
not for a taxi.
im fat, but not that fat.
I’d forgotten about the enyaq, rented a diesel version in Poland over the summer. Decent car, except the la e following nearly did for me going through contraflow
Sunday there is the NEVO car show where you get to see and test loads of electric cars. I might sound like I'm working for Derek but I think if you ever consider buying even in 2 years time this is the place to be on Sunday. You get to see and touch a lot of EV and learn, from sales people of course, and test. I've booked a test drive for a Dacia Spring just for the giggle. I'll buy one in 4-5 years time maybe.
You definitely didn't rent a diesel Enyaq, they're electric onlt
Probably a Karoq or Kodiaq
Could anyone recommend somewhere I can find a map of public chargers which also shows charging speed?
Heading from Wicklow to Limerick tomorrow and the only websites I can find are provider specific. I'd like to see what my options are as I may need to charge en route at some point.
