Dispute with mod

I’ll cut to the chase here.

I feel I am unfairly being targeted by @Beasty in the Current Affairs forum. I have received my second 3 day ban in 2 weeks for a comment they deem to be “uncivil” and it was nothing of the sort. No idea how to resolve this but this has to stop, I am not a troll and partake in discussion. I have received warnings for more egregious comments but this recent one is not even close.

Eager to get a resolution to this and to stop this carry on.

It doesn't matter who reported it, if anyone. It was made clear that anyone who insulted any of the moderation team would get a warning.

The amusing part for me (and this may well earn me a warning) is seeing how the mask slipped far from that poster's usual trope of "if you get so worked up over the Internet/moderators/online arguments go our for a walk/a meal" etc, or how they were such a fan of the mods up to that point that they even volunteered to be one.

I don't know if either of the posts above that I warned were reported. Why is it relevant? They both broke a rule (the same rule) of this thread.

There will never be a list of who reported a post or how many times a post was reported. Ever.

But it doesn't matter if its reported or not, mods can and do action comments that haven't been reported and don't action comments that have been reported.

A comment that breaks the rules does so whether its reported or not. And if someone reports a comment that mods decide doesn't break the rules then you challenging them on that report adds nothing to the conversation.

It sounds like you just want to see who is reporting comments so you can argue with them.

Think of the practical effects of that: people challenging each over on account of who reports who etc, etc. Whatever squabbling and bickering already bevevils boards - and there's already more than enough - that would multiply it to the point of total chaos. You would have people arguing all day every day about it - boards wouldn't be worth logging onto in that scenario.

Or maybe it would have an alternative effect, maybe people would stop or reduce the amount of times they hit the report button if they are to be held accountable for it, maybe when everybody could see the serial offenders then it would help with moderating.

If you want to help the mods do 2 things:

Report posts you think break the rules.
Post within the rules.

If you just take this thread alone as an example - before the occasional clean up, you can often come back to it after a day away and find a huge volume of posts.

And then to read through it is to be confronted with reams of bickering and squabbling where it can be often even just plain genuinely difficult to figure out what exactly the posters are arguing about and even harder to care.

It's a depressing spectacle a lot of the time. And that's only when people are in disagreement about the points others are making.

Bringing reports into it all would make it all so bitter and rancorous. It would, it's naive to think it wouldn't: people oftentimes can't help themselves.

Moderation has been a breath of fresh air the past week or so.

Visual warnings for uncivil posters who I would always think never get actioned.

You can see the difference with having more people to moderate CA.

While I 100% agree with not showing who reported a post, I do think showing how many times a post was reported might help encourage people to also report a post they have an issue with, rather than just start replying and pulling a thread off topic.

I was quite a prolific poster here back at the peak of its success. Moderator and cmod for a while as well.

It’s sad to see it now the very odd time I visit to scan the homepage. Probably time to put it out of its misery. Announce a closing date and let folks get nostalgic for the memories and good times. The core of the site have long moved on, and there’s no one replacing them. This isn’t going to change. It’s remarkable it lasted this long to be honest.

If I may make another suggestion, I think adding a bolded mod note to a warned post should be standard across the forum, for all mods.

As a poster who tries not to get in trouble (but sometimes fails) I find it encouraging when I see someone who is obviously trolling, or baiting, or just being plain being uncivil, with a little note on their post saying "warned". Its also serves as a visual deterrent to other posters, when things are getting out of hand.

Just that one word is enough. I don't need any more than that. I don't need to know who reported the post, or how many reported it, nor do I want to know.

But it does make it feel like the mods are more visible, more engaged, and a little more hands on. JMHO.

None of the posters who routinely mock Trump supporters on the Trump v Harris thread ever seem to be banned. The mod who bans the Trump supporters never replies to messages.

That's not actually correct, I believe both Overheal, myself and others have been banned. Granted I try to remain within the rules but I've had it happen once. So it's not correct to say they don't face bans.

Every one of Newstalk's presenters air their opinions on the subject they are talking about. It's part and parcel of what drives the audience participation with the shows. Eamon Dunphy did it, George Hook did it, Brenda Power did it, Ivan Yates did it, Damien Kiberd did it, Eamon Keane did it.
For fuck sake, even Tom Dunne and Sean Moncrieff aren't shy of giving their opinion on a matter.

I’d have to agree with this, even if some of the Harris supporters do get banned it seems to be the majority of Trump supporters get banned, and in a thread where the ratio is probably 10:1 Harris supporters then it seems likely there is some bias taking place. Also given the higher ratio on one side then it’s likely the report function will be used more by one side more too, imo the current report process is too heavy handed, and in the example of that particular thread it’s actually a barrier to an evenly discussed topic.

First of all, you don't grasp the idea that the report button is used to get a mods attention. It's up to the mod to decide if action is warranted or not. It doesn't matter if a post has been reported once, twice or twenty times. Even though that's been said to you many times on this thread, you're still here with this notion that how many reports are made somehow matter.

I’m not getting into politics here, I’m using the Harris trump thread as a perfect example of what happens when there is a majority on one side, and how that can affect moderating , especially moderating via response to the report function.

Do you disagree that if there is a 10:1 majority on one side in a discussion, especially on a divisive thread, that moderating is impacted by the majority?
