I've decided to sell my Avensis as is. Heaps loads of work to to maintain for the 4 years I've owned. Before I put up on dung deal, if anyone here is interested just drop me a pm👍
Fair enough, thats overpriced. And they should have ran it past you first.
40 euros for wiper blades is outrageous if he didn't check with you first. And for 40 quid they'd want to be the best Bosch super rain expellers 5000 and not the Mr price specials.
Similar with my wonderful new brake pads. Two packs of qh pads might have been what 18 euros? By my calcs about 100 of my 300 euro bill relates to the pads so it's pretty much a wallet raid by him
Sorry, my mistake, he replaced front offside wishbone and the front brake pads, not the discs, and alignment. Agreed, if it included two discs it would have been a very good price.
Annoyingly, the alignment is now slightly off so it pulls very slightly left when you let the steering wheel go and there's a slight vibration at speed. Nothing out of the ordinary and I'm sure 99% of cars this age are at least as bad but it's irritating because it was absolutely perfect when I got it. Like a new car from the factory. Straight as an arrow. Might bring it back to him and see will he go at it again
Completely agree....and yes it was bad form from the garage not to let the OP know beforehand that they were replacing the brake disks as well as the wishbone.
Hate when garages just do stuff like that and then expect you to pay for it. Happened myself recently too.... had car in for a job on the brakes... and garage decided I needed new wiper blades too (I didn't)... and what's more they charged €40 for them 😳 (the same set cost about €5 in Mr. Price and take about 20 seconds to put on). I paid (thru gritted teeth), but won't be going back there again.
Sure a wishbone alone is around €100 for a standard saloon car. Wheel alignment is €30 or so. That only leaves €170 for the brake discs supplied and fitted. My mechanic charges me €100 labour. Granted they should have contacted you first to let you know they were needed but its not a bad price overall and they probably didn’t make much on the job.
Offside wishbone and two front brake discs + wheel alignment all for €300 is not expensive at all.... (especially if he also replaced the brake pads, which they usually suggest doing with new disks).
I was quoted €275 for just rear disks and pads (rear disks are not vented, soo cheaper than fronts), for Nissan Qashqai recently.
500 for that job is great. It's not an easy one by any means.
I got the offside wishbone replaced yesterday. The guy did the front brake discs at the same time despite me not asking him to. I'd have done that myself in the driveway 😡. Charged me 300 including wheel alignment. Seems expensive to me...
Anyway all sorted for the NCT retest next Tuesday afternoon
Sorry for the late response I had to check the NCT fail sheet for the exact description.
Wishbone/swinging arm mountings at the rear had advanced corrosion. Both replaced then passed reinspection
what exactly was done on yours for the 500 do you mind me asking?
asking trixiebust
100%. The roads are still full of them. There are numerous 06 07 08 bubbly avensis taxis running full time in Dublin under the grandfathering rule.
Still, interesting to hear they're having rust issues with the rear suspension. The father in law's one hasn't had any issue with that in the nct as yet.
You'll always have a customer that's for sure and even if something happened and it was only fit for scrap the exporters or shanahan vehicle dismantlers in cork will give ya €500 for it.
Those things were done on mine & cost €500 at the time, this was 3 years ago though. My mechanic said the same at the time, they were all failing on the same thing.
It's the cheaper rate €514 for the year. And believe it or not, somebody approached me in a SuperValu car park not so long ago wanting to know would I sell. Sorry I didn't now 😂
YEs good cars at 1700 or less🙂
I disagree on nobody wanting them. There's always a customer for a relatively cheap simple roomy car. A clean one with test will be worth over a grand to quite a few.
Not a lot of the mid naughties petrol saloons still on the roads. The bubbly avensis is holding on better than most.
Always remember asking prices are not selling prices
Not a hope avensis are making north of 2k at that age, nobody wants them anymore, the nct are failing them on nothing arms in the back, it's not a cheap job
Nothing to do with donedeal. It's the same as it was with the avensis mark 1, the Carina E, the Carina mark 2, the E10 Corolla etc etc etc. My father in law has a clean 07 and he regularly gets cash offers from country types when he's filling up. To an extent its well founded. People love a big car that's relatively cheap to run and doesn't break down. Try selling a 1.6 Laguna for 2 grand for example. Different story
Shur that second one ya linked has more km's on the clock. And the first is the exact type of example I talked about already the m1nter that has the type of seller that's going to wait and wait for a big price. He'll struggle big time to get his 4k though.
I know from experience 1.5k is a solid solid price to get for decent 1.6 avensis. Nearly all the ones on DD at 2k and above sit on it for a while and usually have a marked price reduction not including whatever a buyer might haggle in the flesh.
I'm not knocking them either they're great cars. There is however a ceiling to the price of most of them.
Those two are both in the sticks and have big milages but yeah they're keenly priced and won't hang around long. Plenty in the 2k+ range up there too

Asking 2k and getting it are two very different things though. Plenty asking up on 2k but I'd say the vast majority are selling for a chunk less than that.
The very odd low mileage m1nter might differ if the seller is willing to wait for the right customer but that's about it.

Have a look on donedeal. People are 1.6 Avensis obsessed. You would get one for 1500 maybe with a short NCT and rough bodywork but 2k+ for a relatively clean one all day long
A 1.6 avensis won't sell for 2.5k. 1.5k would be a more realistic price.
The one question I'd have is if it's 08 and a 1.6 petrol, is it one 535 tax or is it emissions based and 750 tax or something like that?
Thanks, I wasn't sure of the cost of replacing those bits. It's a petrol 1.6 with 230 odd km.
Was thinking of selling as is for 1k but if that's all it takes to fix,I'll definitely be looking into it.
Having got something else last week,2.5k would be nice & handy!
Thanks. I'll bear that in mind. I'll get a price or two on the repair and go from there
I see your position as quite different to mine because an 08 Avensis with an NCT is worth 2500 all day long. People lose their minds for a good Avensis. Is it diesel?
A 21 year old 1.8 petrol Mazda 6 is a different situation. Insurance is difficult to get, tax expensive, parts not available in breakers yards etc
A CV boot if the driveshaft is fine, can be taken off, replaced, packed with grease and put back on and shouldn't cost more than 100 or so. Even if the CV joint needs replacing it's maybe 225 total. Definitely get the NCT on it now and then decide what to do next
I'll buy it off you based off of that NCT result.
I just need something that's not dangerous, has an NCT and will get me through a few months
Definitely good advice re "all depends on the tester". One of my cars that had a drink of Dipetane every month and a binge session and Italian tune-up prior to recent NCT failed on emissions specatacularly. Mechanic, who has a 6 week waiting list, said there's absolutely nothing wrong with the car's emissions.… I'll know for sure tomorrow night.
