Speed cameras expected to be in place at various locations including N5 Swinford soon.
That's great news, hopefully it will be for the full length of the bypass. If people stick to speed limit it should remove a big risk factor for crashes with crossing traffic.
Another near fatal crash on the bypass.
Single car collision. Not sure we can blame the road this time but maybe it contributed in some way.
Update on the planned average speed cameras on the Swinford bypass.
Cameras are now installed and undergoing testing.
Are there only 2 cameras? If so you could speed like a maniac as long as you turn off before the second camera.
Potentially but if people start turning off it may change their behaviour for the next time they pass through.
It says they are to be located between Lislackagh and Cuilmore - that's potentially a 4km separation distance but I presume they will be much closer.
Have to confess I know little about the technology.
If they are quite close together it’ll make them rather redundant as anyone wishing to speed will just slow down for the 4km and then speed up again after the 2nd camera.
Anyone driving between Dublin and Limerick in a hurry nowadays drives at speed from Dublin to Nenagh and from Birdhill to Limerick.
Does the average speed mean the average of the 2 location readings? i.e you could do 120kph passing first one and drop to 80kph at second one to average limit of 100 if avoiding points?
No. It records your reg and times how long it takes you to travel between the two cameras. If you do it too quickly then you've been speeding.
The 4km are where the problems have been, I think that's the concept anyway.
Cameras will be turned on tomorrow on the Swinford bypass.
Latest from the council on the plans for grade separation : Consultants will be appointed in Q4 2024 to provide technical and environmental support to the project. Project appraisal, feasibility and options selection will progress throughout 2025.
It now appears there are two separate projects in planning for the Swinford bypass.
The one I mentioned above is at the very start of the design process, but the other, relating just to the R320 junction, is already at the preparation of tender documents stage.
I have no idea what the scope of work is for , but it must be minor as there has been no planning application.
Would have thought that the R320 junction wasnt that straightforward unless the initial ideas have been scaled back.
Surveys are underway along the bypass to determine traffic flows at the various junctions. This will inform the nature of the improvements needed at each junction. I can only imagine it will be many years before any major works such as new bridges etc will actually be done.
A small but welcome intervention to improve the R320 junction. This junction will still have to be grade separated at some stage though as there is simply too much traffic crossing the N5 that doesn't need to be on the N5.
Good to see some improvements
Yeah only a GSJ with right turns eliminated will really make a difference
