@duvet day - aviation is extremely regulated and monitored, we pretty much have the black box analysed after each flight and we will get called on the carpet if we have busted any limitations. This could result in getting grounded and sent back to training or blocked from moving to another aircraft type as a promotion, so each flight is taken extremely seriously. None of the aircraft that you saw landing this weekend would have exceeded their allowable limitations, and as these are different between aircraft types and crew, you might have seen one type landing and the next going around.
So always remember when you are flying that the two people sitting in the front have as much desire to get home to their families or dogs, as you do, they also want to keep their careers, so they wont play games or take excessive risks.
Why do it, well on a normal day there is a huge sense of Exhilaration, on a nasty day, you still have that and a massive sense of accomplishment, and then you get to go home to the dog.
