I find it equally mystifying that people seem to genuinely believe that if Israel just stops, unprecedented euphoria will wash over the Middle East and all the other bad faith actors will huge stakes of blame in this will just somehow magically melt away.

I'm not a Hamas supporter but I will say this. Whilst I don't support their religious or social doctrine at all, nor the killings of innocent people anywhere. I find it disturbing that people such as yourself and others on here are more concerned and confused about why a group of oppressed people with basic technology, poor education, people who have lost generations of their family members through murder and poverty, their land siezed, future stolen and rights removed , killed 1000 people. ....and a supposed western democracy, who claim be fighting for good, are a supposed military force not terrorist organisation and with the best education and state of the art precision weaponry , have killed over 40,000 people, destroyed home and stolen land is ignored.
Ok I had a very quick read of some of Shoogs posts. I believe he is saying the Israel created the conditions for Hamas to thrive in Gaza with their treatment of the occupied territory. I believe the UN Sec Gen said exactly that many months ago and said it didn't happen in a vacuum. Gaza was described as an open air prison before the war - economy in freefall, living conditions very poor, very high unemployment, no prospects, very little self determination etc. Do you think the UN Sec Gen had a point?
As was I a supporter once of the Palestinian cause, until I saw that the thin veneer of democracy or rights based societies, or decent civil society was confined to the leadership of groups like PLO and long replaced by local values and beliefs that were anathema to anyone who didn't want a bronze age savagery

100% agree with all of that. There's no winners/good guys here. You have two groups of people who view themselves as displaced. The best they can aim for is to live beside each other peacefully but there will forever be some sort of agitation from either camp.

People never had a chance to properly process or digest the horrific events of October 7th. Netanyahu immediately went on an orgy of revenge and retribution and within a week or so, the main news coming out of the region was the Israeli gearing up for all out war and the attacks on Gaza by the IDF.
