Following on from main thread in Current Affairs about Tubs in general (now closed and mod suggestion that Entertainment category is more suitable).
Indeed, entertainment in certain respects is what Tubs has provided, albeit perhaps in a way not intended. And still awaiting 150k payback to the licence fee holder.
And of course, his new career in Virgin Radio which is imminent.

My original post in this thread was in response to someone claiming that Tubridy, to paraphrase, inherited the big job from the family. On querying this I was told that his grandfather had been chairman of the RTE authority.
With regard to Tubridy's uncle, I was simply acknowledging that the uncle had been an RTE employee, and therefore might have asked someone to keep an eye on his nephew.
Like every other poster here, I have no idea what actually happened, but I would question the notion that Tubridy's family connections got him the top job in RTE. In an organisation that spent so much on flip flops, I would think that poor management is what got Tubridy to the top.
What annoys me about this type of corruption is that other people dont have a chance when rte insiders just look after themselves
He was 50 in that pic? Helluva drug as rick james used to say
Bobson and Peter were probably there also - trying out the rocking chair
Well for some reason the c suite took an active intrest in researcher Ryan, so it is either croynism or nepotism. There is no "MIGHT" about it. Pick one. They are both sh1t options.
But it happened. Stop pretending it didn't. It has been acknowledged on air and by Ryan himself in the same exchange.
You can go back and find the episode and listen yourself. I would find it for you. But the podcasts of Ryans show are poorly indexed and I don't have the time to find it. But knock yourself out.
Are you cool with cronyism or nepotism?
Sausage fingers.
I have already acknowledged (Post 5675) that Tubridy's connections would have done him no harm in getting a foot on the bottom rung of the ladder in RTE.
what did Tub's uncle do in RTÉ, btw this is clearly a family of overachievers
They are similar to the O'Callaghans and the Hardimans
No need to be so hard on yourself!
Who got Joe Duffy and Ray D’Arcy into RTÉ?
The Illuminati.
Joe Duffy is one of the Worker Party members within RTÉ, Harris and them brought him in, AFAIK Byrne was affilated but not a member, though no such organisation worked in RTÉ!
D'Arcy spent nearly a decade in Children's TV he was so good! I will say no more about my conspiracy theory there!
BTW I am joking on D'Arcy but Joe Duffy story is around, there are a few RTÉ people that were brought into TV and Radio because of it in the 70s and 80s.
The Duffster was a high achiver back in the day. President of both the TCDSU and USI. He was pretty radical. If I remember correctly he lead a lot of strikes. I am suprised he didn't move in to politics. He did start in RTE as a sort of stringer for Gay Byrne who took Joe under his wing.
D'Arcy started out in Radio Na Gaeltachta I think, then worked his was up. When he rejoined RTE his Today FM show was huge. He seemed genuinly competant in the slot on Today FM. Amazing what a good team can do.
That is how they got in to RTE.
Tubs was just at a lose end after quiting Kings Inn after two weeks and a family member/friend got him into RTE.
I heard that before but I don't think that is true about Ray D'Arcy on RnaG, I could be wrong but I don't think so, he was presenting Jo Maxi by the time he was at least 18 at most 23.
I’ve seen it many times, never sat in it. i personally would find the desire to sit in a display item like that rather gauche. It reminds me of a video I saw this past summer of an Irish tourist in Elvis Presley’s Graceland home jumping over a clearly marked “PRIVATE - NO ENTRY” ring fenced swimming pool to have a dip, loudly encouraged and celebrated by his travelling companions. Very unbecoming behaviour.
I was surprised to read this myself. Wikipedia suggests it is true, with RD apparently working in RnaG from 1985 - 1988, prior to joining RTÉ to host Jo-Maxi.
Wikipedia’s accuracy is of course open to debate.
calls himself the human trampoline….
I remember talking to someone on Rays show who mentioned he started there. I can see it is listed on his wiki and their is a reference. But the reference is the Daily Mirror. So I don't know. Maybe he didn't.
To be fair to Ray, he left RTE and built an audience on a seperate station againt 2fms flag ship show. He might be sh1te now. But he was a solid presenter at one point.
I am not old enought to say if the same is true of the Duffster.
I find it hard to believe as, other than introducing An Nuacht, I haven't ever heard him speak much Irish. It would be strange for a Young People's presenter, that has Irish, not to be part of RTÉ Irish Language output, or their promotion of the language. Your telling me that Ray wouldn't be co-opted into doing something in Irish with Dara Ó Briain and Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh? Even Zig & Zag had a Yoplait ad as geailge.
Now that you mention it, yes. He does seem to have problems with the An Nuacht handovers as well.
I completely understand your point and indeed share your scepticism, I was simply referring to what was contained in Wikipedia. I similarly cannot recall hearing him ever speaking Irish. “Raidió Ray” has a ring to it I guess, even if only as a skit. I guess a possible explanation could be that he worked in an off-air/non-presenting capacity, but I would have assumed that to work there in any capacity would require fluency in the tongue. If only he was managed by Noel Kelly - we’d likely then have confirmation one way or another within minutes from one of the team.
It is odd, perhaps your right something off air. Or a middle of the night slot where speaking Irish isn't all that important.
what a tune! U must be a John Creedon fan
At that point RnaG was off air at night, afaik 3FM took over the air in the mid-80s and then RnaG went 24 hours with the arrival of Lyric FM in 1999 replacing 3FM.
Up to the late 90s RnaG didn't allow any English Language even in songs, if not the early 2000s it was a very strict rule..
The man behind Partridge or the man beside Partridge?
you have me rumbled :)
Heard an author on Pat Kenny show today who has written a book exposing how badly the Kennedy men treated women. Some shocking stuff.
Ryan won't be happy, since his hero is JFK.
The apple did not fall far from the tree...
Ryan doesn't talk about gutter press rumours and salacious tittle tattle. JFK was a romantic hero and all round good egg who single handedly saved the world in the 1960's. He was a natty dresser and spoke very eloquently. /END.
Listened to the Callan’s Kicks podcast on the way home. For his fans, Ryan gets a brief mention in this week’s episode. Contrary to beliefs held in some quarters SF feature prominently, with the title of the episode (pictured below) going somewhat against the oft-suggested favour given to the party. The opening and closing sketches pull no punches in their mocking of recent events concerning the party. You can judge for yourselves and listen to the podcast now, or wait until the radio broadcast at 6:30pm. Hopefully no-one is forced to listen to it against their will.
