I don’t know is he doing any of the music selection or just linking to the music that has been chosen for his show? His show seems to have a lot more 60s music than the other daytime shows and more ballads whereas Rick O Shea is 90s and 00’s heavy and Will is 80s and 90s with a few new tracks
It's what was in the charts for the chosen year. Could be ballads, could be instrumentals , could be anything.

A question i have for those that know such as Declan. For the 13 hours or so with no presenter does a computer do all the work and pick the songs these days? Or how does it work on Gold?

I can't specifically say what RTE use, but all of the stations would have computerised playout systems nowadays.

I was a bit disappointed with the 80s selection last Saturday afternoon, (c 3-4pm), thought it leaned in too heavily on the lean years 86/87
I know John Connelly who comes on at 5pm caters more for the 78-84 era, but is the earlier slot usually that bland?
Small point but John Connolly has been known to go back as far as 1977, and possibly 1976, and his show covers all of the 1980s. I often hear stuff on his show from 1987 or 1988. Amanda Farrrelly presents that 80s show in the afternoon and I rarely hear it, unless I happen to tune in live to RTE Gold just before John's ABC to XTC starts!
Ronan really "rocking" it this morning with Black Sabbath! I bet that hasnt been played often on RTE Gold.
Ronan does seem to have a genuinely eclectic mix of songs on the Top 10 at 10 - not just the usual compilation album stuff
He plays a good few showband / middle of the road songs if it's a 60s mystery year
Indeed that's what is great about the top ten, it's the Irish top ten so you can hear all kinds of stuff from the showbands when it's the sixties. Who could resist bopping along to "Old Man Trouble" by Doc Carroll!
Were showbands just an Irish thing?
Well yes and no. There's nothing uniquely Irish about a band, with musicians and singers, usually upwards of five or six members, guitar, brass and maybe saxophone, drums and er, accordians?
But yes, they were an Irish thing in that they toured the country playing dancehalls usually or what in the summer were called "carnivals" which were large tents in a farmer's field.

Will Leahy’s monologue this morning was about the death of Liam Payne of One Direction overnight. He then played the song “Perfect” by them, which contains the lyric “But if you like causing trouble up in hotel rooms”. I think that was a bit inappropriate considering how he died!

I doubt it was intentional on Will's part. And anyway it's poetic licence and its about a girl casually meeting a guy in a hotel room. Liam didn't even write or part-write the song with One direction, he just sang along on the chorus.
How many of the great dead rock stars sang about aspects or circumstances of their future death?
For example, from what I remember Nirvana's "In Bloom" was played on radio stations on the day and days/weeks after Kurt's suicide by shooting himself.
