There's a screen grab. And the Munster squad they're facing on Friday evening.
3 players out of 36 a bit disappointing, but I'd imagine with the lads missing from the final, and likely didn't have any Gowna players available to train last few weeks.
Yeah, Club commitments would have ruled a few out. Monaghan a small number too but lots of good players in Ulster even with injuries and club commitments.
Mark Bradley who hasn't played with Tyrone in a few years in the Squad. Though he will likely be back in the panel under Malachy O Rourke.
Interesting it seems that every county is represented in the 4 provinces. Even Connacht has London and New York. It's good to see to have this involvement across all counties (excluding Kilkenny of course who don't play Senior football)
Yeah I read its a rule for all Counties to be represented. I see Kevin Quinn is on the Leinster panel. He impressed against Cavan a few years ago in that play off game in Navan.
Ah that's fair then. Yeah is worth having someone from all involved so.
Interesting development i believe that his role does not permit him to manage other teams including club. Anyone know who was named as Gowna manager in programs this year?
https://www.anglocelt.ie/2024/10/17/cavan-county-board-to-discuss-mccabes-westmeath-appointment/
Fintan Reilly is the named Gowna Manager was my understanding.
The county board will “discuss” it and do nothing. The man runs the place and has free run of Breffni Park. He’ll tell them what he is doing before they’ll tell him anything.
Yeah i would imagine that is the way it will work.
Anyone here any word on who might be in for the postions of chairman, vice-chairman and PRO?
I'd say there will be a nice bit chair swapping going on if they get their way.
Unfortunately its not that simple. McCabe is an employee and the employer is Cavan GAA. You cannot just remove him from a role as you dont like what he is doing in his evenings - unless its in his contract that he cannot work for a competitor or have a 2nd job (and then you would need to prove he has a 2nd job as I am sure Westmeath would say he is a volunteer). It is very very hard to remove someone from a position in Irish Law. If Cavan GAA are unhappy with the performance of any of their employees they need to be documenting it, communicating it to the employee, giving the employee chance to rectify the issues, following their own disciplinary procedure for employees (assuming they have one), issue verbal and/or written warnings etc etc. Ignore that stuff and you will end up in court paying a big fine.
Karl Lacey is Head of Acamedy in Donegal and manages kilcoo. McCabe managed Clonguish while he was Games development officer. It seems to be issue that he will be facing Cavan in the league.
Who said anything about removing him?
Wonder will the game go ahead Sunday. Forecast not good.
Agreed. He's taken full advantage of the hero worship around Breffni. And it's made him fairly insufferable to interact with. A stint within another county will genuinely do him good.
Yes exactly. I’m not sure why Myles was giving a lecture on employment law like the rest of us are Neanderthals. I’m quite aware it’s virtually impossible to sack someone in this country and I had said that the employee in this case holds the cards, not the employer, so not sure where the response came from.
Chair swapping is what I’ve heard alright. Mark O’Rourke going for chair & Susan Brady for vice but they are both Ballyhaise so can’t get both.
Wouldn't it be great to see someone from outside the cliche come in and have a run at it.
Nothing stopping it??? The reality is people don't want to do it.
I heard a few names were interested in going for chairman. The other positions maybe harder filling.
It's implied by the post I was replying to.
Could you point out where you said "the employee in this case holds the cards, not the employer. Apologies I must have missed that? I just read the post where you said
" The county board will “discuss” it and do nothing. "
IT being his double jobbing. So perhaps you could explain what the co board should do.
I didn't call or imply anyone was a neanderthal either, a lot of people probably aren't even aware mccabe is an employee and so has certain rights. I wasn't insulting anyone's intelligence by pointing that out.
“The man runs the place and has free run of Breffni Park. He’ll tell them what he is doing before they’ll tell him anything” - what exactly did you take that as meaning? My post was only three or four sentences.
Where did I say they should do anything? The reference was to an article about the county board saying they will “discuss” it. What do I think the county board should do? How about an analysis of his performance in the last decade in the role. How exactly have Cavan performed at each age grade etc. How does he compare to people working in other counties in his role etc How about analysing why we have club coaches and not professionals selecting and coaching our dev squads? Has the percentage of Gowna players involved in development squads greatly increased since his introduction to the role? The list could go on.
That analysis would be a good start and it shouldn’t have taken this issue for it to be done either.
Potential conflicts between the two roles need to be addressed and discussed with him also. For example, if a coach is working well in Cavan, what if McCabe decides he wants them in his Westmeath setup? What if he is interviewing a candidate for a job - would he prefer them in Westmeath or Cavan? We’ll now be playing a League opponent next year who will be managed by a man who will still have a huge knowledge (not historical but to the very day) of our county team and its processes etc. Which would bring McCabe better media attention - positive results for an intercounty team or with Cavan juvenile teams?
It has regularly been discussed here that he is an employee and was pointed out in the linked article so you are insulting people’s intelligence to be honest. There are very few GAA people in Cavan who wouldn’t be aware he is an employee.
From the article: “The 1997 All-Star, regarded as one of Cavan’s best footballers of recent decades and who was joint-manager of the Gowna side who won the Cavan Senior Football Championship in 2022 and 2023, is employed as Games Development Manager (GDM) with Cavan county board.”
I didn't take that from the post but I'll leave it at that.
You said earlier that's you said "the employee in this case holds the cards, not the employer"
I'm Just saying that you didn't say that.
I agree the county board should do a review and should have metrics in place that mcabe should be held accountable to. Accusing him of bias however (something you cannot prove) would a bad road to go down.
So, again I’ll ask, what exactly did you take from ““The man runs the place and has free run of Breffni Park. He’ll tell them what he is doing before they’ll tell him anything”?
I didn't take anything from it but if your asking me now I take it as a rant against Dermot McCabe initially and then a rant against the county board for not dealing with him.
Will you be running in the election next month? You’re good at avoiding questions and trying to change the topic. The only man went off on a rant was yourself who clearly misread a post and now won’t admit it. Even another poster has pointed out that you took something from a post that simply wasn’t there.
Mickey Graham is part of the Connacht management team after leaving Leitrim which seems strange. Some talk that he'll replace Cian O Neill as the Galway coach.
In the past week, I’ve heard Mickey is going to Derry, Kilmacud & joining McCabe in Westmeath.
