Following on from main thread in Current Affairs about Tubs in general (now closed and mod suggestion that Entertainment category is more suitable).
Indeed, entertainment in certain respects is what Tubs has provided, albeit perhaps in a way not intended. And still awaiting 150k payback to the licence fee holder.
And of course, his new career in Virgin Radio which is imminent.

That was credible until you mentioned Peploes, awful place.
His SoCoDu middleclass, Blackrock College educated background certainly wouldn't have been a hindrance in RTE.
"Tubs mentioned something about the lifer being a bit of mentor to Ryan, with the lifer casually mentioning that he had been asked by management to take a special intrest in Ryan and to look after him."
Now we get it
"the lifer casually mentioning that he had been asked by management to take a special intrest in Ryan and to look after him."
Yes, proof positive that Tubridy's family had some kind of hold over RTE management.
Anyway …
Tubs last 2 interviews should have brought more to Dawn O'Porter, the idea would be that you show the audience its the type of show that "there’s trust between the presenter and the guests so that people are comfortable drifting outside their comfort zone". This allows the audience tune into even to relatively unknown guest.
Brian, I know we have had an exchange on this in the past ok? but I wouldn't really call being handed the breakfast/morning drive on RTE's 2FM as being bottom rung of the ladder, even if it was the case that he was making tea for presenters before that. Usually one would have to make their way up and prove themselves before being given a primetime morning drive slot. The decision is RTE managements yes, but that is not to say that there was no influence.
A dead relative can still have influence, and get someone a job despite lack of any discerning talent.
I give you Exhibit A, Lottie Ryan.
Wireless are continue to expand the Talksport brand in Ireland, if they're stuck with contract time to burn down at any point that could be a purgatory position
I don't think his rise was quite as meteoric as you think, but it was definitely more meteoric than it deserved to be.
I still think that management incompetence, rather than the influence of a dead grandfather, explains Tubridy's rise to the top.
I would definitely think that there is nepotism in RTE, but I don't know who would have been able to exercise it on Tubridy's behalf, apart from his uncle, Niall, who retired from RTE in 1977.
My knowledge is that ALL early breakfast slots are to be canned and TalkRadio's weekend programming to be reduced to 6 hours with the remaining carrying Talksport.
Though we agreed on Shanahans, we’ll have to agree to disagree on Peploes.
Peploes is as over-rated for/in its price class as Shanahans is in its. Just my opinion of course.
There is a tubridy vibe to a place that stuck a chair to a wall because JFK sat on it
When was that?
are they doing any early breakfast slots in Ireland?
But you were full sure 10mins ago that it was the dead grandad and you even managed to pull out a photo from your private collection. You’d believe anything, flat earther?.
V/Ted, Q102 is V/Ted overnight also
TheBMG already knows that but look he is incapable of asking a genuine question.
Lets say their is something other Ryans familial relationship with RTE. So no nepotoism. How do explain someone from upper management taking a special intrest in new hire, Ryan. Cronyism? Either one is not great.
wasn’t
hey nettle knickers you can relax.
I asked a question because I didn’t see any mention of an early breakfast show on the Q102 website.
They do mention overnights (with a photo of Lindsay Dolan) but don’t name a presenter. glad to see both Wireless doing programming overnight and that I got an answer from a more informative poster (thank you @L1011)
I didn't hear the interview, so I don't know what was said.
Perhaps Tubridy's uncle, a former RTE employee, asked someone to keep an eye on the young lad.
Perhaps the person who hired Tubridy saw him as a great talent (I think most posters would agree that RTE management have difficulty in distinguishing arses from elbows), and thought he should be nurtured.
Tubs might buy the chair from them with cash from renalt
It's vomit inducing....much like a "bad egg"
Oh golly gosh, jiminy jollickers!
todays paper
You work in the radio industry and are very well aware that the Wireless radio stations are automated before their respective breakfast shows. Your post yesterday was just another one of your attempts to be Mr Smart guy. Next time ask me something that you don't know but if you simply can't do that I would prefer if you would not ask at all.
I honestly had no idea that Wireless did any form of overnight programming other than automated output. I’m delighted if they do have content on those timeslots tbh.
I don’t see any mention of early breakfast shows on any of the Irish Wireless stations however …
Okay so look, I will make this very simple for you. Going forward please do not ask me any questions on this thread that you already know the answer to.
👍🏻
Well no. The ex lifer sai they had been told told to keep on eye on him from upper managment. I don't think C Suite staff interview runners.
Which leaves Tubs uncle getting involved. So we have some nepotism at play here. Ok. Glad we can both agree on that.
"I don't think C Suite staff interview runners."
But Tubridy's dead grandfather had been chairman of the RTE authority until 3 years before Tubridy was born. Surely that would mean that Tubridy wasn't inteviewed, but brought in and told that one day he would host RTE's flagship chatshow and be RTE's top earner.
"Which leaves Tubs uncle getting involved. So we have some nepotism at play here. Ok. Glad we can both agree on that."
So if Tubridy's uncle, as per my speculation, told someone to keep an eye on the young fellow, do you think that person then made it his life's work to ensure that Tubridy got to the top in RTE?
I am not bringing Tubs grandad into this. You said yourself his uncle probably held some influence. What is with the hyperbolic response.
