I don't see why this case should prompt that. He would probably find a way to get locked up again and the laws having to be changed again. And again. And again. If people are brainwashed enough to want to spend life in prison over something like this when they can easily purge contempt and be out straight away, then the state shouldn't allow that to strong arm them into changing laws. That's a slippery slope. Let the lad rot in jail and start hitting the family in the pocket would be my opinion. Absolutely disgusting parenting to support a child staying in prison like that in my view but no surprise with that family.
Change being needed is something I'd agree with, but the current situation has the immediate desired effect: keep Burke away from the school.
But the idea that he's martyring himself is a bit of a miss because very few people agree with him (in terms of his stance rather than his belief)
It's also giving him a lot of contemplative time away from the family, except for visits and letters as phones are a NO NO in prison. I assume he does have a bible and other books in his cell. Maybe the worm will turn if he has enough spare time away from inculcation.
It’s the undesirable effect though that is of greater concern to the Courts, that the Judge noted in Burke’s last spell under incarceration - that the State is covering both the cost of incarceration, and the cost of his full salary:
A High Court judge has said it is "extremely unsatisfactory" that secondary school teacher Enoch Burke is still being paid his full salary while the State is also incurring the costs of his continued imprisonment in Mountjoy Prison. Incarceration being an ineffective deterrent for contempt is likely to be a greater influencing factor there than Burke’s individual behaviour.

Martyrdom has never been based on the amount of people who agree or disagree with a particular belief or stance. It’s always been based upon the appearance of being persecuted for holding a particular belief or set of beliefs or ideas or values, advocating a particular stance. Among those people who support him, who Burke can count among his supporters (albeit on two hands, pretty much limited to immediate family members only), it’s not only Burke sees himself as a martyr for his cause, it’s the members of his own family do too. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to learn that they’re all a mixture of both envious and proud of Burke’s achievements in the public domain (as they see it, not as people who don’t share their world views or values would see it).

Personally my mind has had a theme of a debtors prison running through it for the likes of Enoch Burke and those who choose to ride on the back of the taxpayer where civil law infringements are concerned. Provide them board and lodging at their own expense and not as guests of the nation.

I saw that, flooded with Garda was the the name of the video. She really is a pathetic sad woman going around bothering people whilst her son sits in prison like a lemon. and the son whichever one he was jamming his foot in the door like a prick of a child might. What a waste of life and education the family is.
Fair play to the Garda there - incredible patience in the face of such ridiculous provocation.

Isaac should have been arrested for keeping his foot in the door of Lisa Chambers office. He didn't have an appointment, he just showed up and tried to force himself in. Similarly with Alan Dillon's office, harassing an admin staff member about his letter.

This case will push it forward, they have been sounding the alarm on our contempt laws for decades at this stage.
I have absolutely no problem with this spanner spending the rest of his life in jail, but that has to be done through the criminal justice system with trials.

They sent e-mails to Alan Dillon and Lisa Chambers 11 days ago asking about the definition of "gender" in bill that is going before the Dail. They haven't received a reply to the e-mail and called to the two politician's offices today to ask why not.
Says it all about their communications skills that 11 mins and 47 seconds of them ranting fails to get their basic point across.

The problem with contempt is it resides predominately in the opaque and confusing world of archaic common law, the obvious thing is to put it on a statuary footing with a clear frame work to follow.
In common law jurisdictions, such as Ireland contempt laws are there to ensure the smooth running of the court system and to ensure the fair treatment of all parties before the law? What do you think they are there for?
To do anything other than hold him in jail for his contempt would be to decide the people are not entitled to equal treatment before the law. No democracy can hope to survive on that basis. A law abiding person has the right to go about their business unhindered and the only way that can happen is if Burke is in prison. If you can come up with an alternate way of ensuring he does not interfere with the operation of the school during term, let us know.

Common law is not always compatible with statutory laws, or in fact the constitution or human rights laws.
It's why periodically they have be changed.
