The problem with that is that Israel accepted the two states proposed by the UN, and the current situation has come about because the Arab states refused that and attacked Israel.
They lost, and if they had done like the Mexicans did when they lost their war with the US, or like the Germans did when they accepted the loss of Alsace-Lorraine, or the Poles or Ukrainians or a multitude of other countries who've had to accept that they can't just wish the neighbouring states around them out of existence, Palestine could be a successful mediterranean state. Maybe like Tunisia. Or at worst, a religion-ridden poverty-stricken dump like most of the other Arab states around it.
But there didn't have to be an ongoing war. That was entirely Hamas' doing, and Hamas are the elected government of Gaza. The Gazans had more of a choice in who rules them than the Syrians or the Yemenis did, but I don't see anybody spending much time worrying about the wars going on there and the civilians being killed there.

It would take a significant increase in the tax take to bring the Irish Defence Forces up to any kind of increased level worthy of even bothering to do so and even then what value there would be in doing so would remain very questionable. And no party is interested in doing that, regardless of where they sit on the political aisle.
How much more tax would you be willing to hand over for this increase in defence budget, because it'll need to be quite a bit. The reality is you'd be pissing and moaning if an increase in taxes was announced.

We allocated 1.35b recently, which won't make that much of a difference in reality. It would take significantly more to increase our DF to a level where it can compete.
