Sky broadband router bridge mode?

Thinking of moving from Virgin to Sky which is much cheaper, basic TV package and 1Gb/s broadband for €60p/m for 12 months. Paying €100 at the moment for basic virgin tv package and 500Mb/s broadband. Rang virgin and they couldn't really offer anything close to the Sky deal but they did warn me that speeds with Sky wouldn't be as good and likely to be nowhere near the advertised 1Gb/s.

Anyway I have my current Virgin router in bridge mode to a mesh and internally wired ethernet network. I've read that the Sky router can't do bridge mode, does that mean then I'll have 2 wifi networks in the house whether I want them or not. Obviously I don't have to connect to the Sky wifi but seems silly that it'll just be sitting there using up energy.

Another question is if I do change to Sky do they run 1Gb/s broadband through the coaxial/docsis cable system or will there be a rigmarole of getting a phone line in the house up and running?

For the 1GB Sky Broadband, this is via Fibre which will involve the installation of a new fibre optic cable into the house (the co-axial cable used currently is owned by Virgin and only Virgin provide service via it)

If you won't have a phone service via Sky you can bridge the modem but even better as long as the mesh system supports vlan tagged (Vlan is set to 10) you can ditch the Sky router altogether

Sorry to dig up an old thread but the OP’s question is exactly what I am trying to find out. I have VM 360 in bridge mode with a google mesh as my router. We do have a phone service via VM and that is plugged directly into the VM box. So it’s a VOIP service.

if I switch to Vodafone SIRO or Sky SIRO, in my setup, can I bridge either box so I can keep my router. I want to keep the phone line also so I assume that plugs back into the supplied modem or am I better just switching to a different VOIP provider. My router does support Vlan tagging 10 according to online reports. It’s a google nest version, one before current sold.

I can't speak to the telephone side of things but I got sky broadband and set up vlan tagging with my TP Link Deco mesh system. So my ONT box is connected directly to my deco base node and I don't use the sky broadband router at all.

Did you ever get this working? Google Nest is meant to support VLAN 10 and meant to download the right settings once you set it up but it's never worked for me. Have my Sky hub connected with its wifi off

That's an old post ! Went perfect in the end. One guy said couldn't be done and his buddy turned up and said he could do it. Circet found the blockage about 5 feet away from my box, ran a new short section from the blockage up to my ESB box, connected and it's working well since. VM refused to change price down to match until the very day I was getting switched over. Then it was too late for them. Step one is ask to switch, and then Circet turn up. They can either do it right then or they can't and have to come back. Don't ditch VM until Siro up and running fully. Add €5 per month for phone if you need a house phone and then port number ensuring VM still active. So you will have to suffer one extra month payment to VM.

Google Nest supports VLAN 10 but you can't configure on the Nest. You need a separate switch that can tag VLAN for you & then connect that to the WLAN port on the Nest.

Currys have a cheap TP Link managed switch for €30 that can do this. I have post on this forum on how to setup & configure this.

If yes are there any difficulties getting the connection details from Sky?

Yep, same as what the user above me said. On SIRO you can connect your own router to the ONT on the wall and bypass the Sky hub altogether. Just note that if you're using Google Wifi/Nest you need a separate ethernet switch.

Sky contract agreed and will take over the service sometime in the week before 26th.

My contract ends on 26th and today I received this from PureTelecom my present provider.

I would advise asking your provider to take over after 26/09/2024.
If they take over before this date, a €150 termination fee; plus, clawback fees will apply.

That was a real shock!

I had replied to the above email saying I was not terminating my contract and will pay the full term of the contract and this is the reply I got from Pure a few minutes ago.

If Eir take over before 26/09/2024, it will automatically cancel your services with Pure Telecom.Therefore, termination and clawback fees will apply.

This is the first time I have met this and have changed many times over the years.

What to do?

I sorted it by changing the connection date for Sky to the day after my contract ends. Hopefully Sky honours their connection date.

I just discovered that a family member got caught by this when his new provider 'jumped the gun' and took over the service early.

I got the Sky hub, but apparently cannot access any WAN settings of use, so I cannot see how I could either set it in bridge mode or edit the connection details if I ever wanted to connect to an alternate provider. (I had thought of using the Sky Hub to connect to my present provider temporarily which would allow me to confirm everything is working.)

I cannot even find where I can set up a "third party" VOIP service.

Either I am being rather dumb, or this box is so locked down as to be useless.

If you're on pure fibre and not VDSL then you don't need to bridge the Sky hub, you can take it out altogether.

Thanks - that is what I hope to do, but was looking at bridging as an alternative in case I fail to use my existing router.
I notice an option WANoE which I think might be bridged mode.

Everything I have read so far indicates that even with WANoE there is still the problem with double NAT.

The only item I was unsure of was when to connect … I expected the existing connectioin to drop to indicate that Sky had taken over, but it did not, so I delayed trying until about 5pm.

We have sky fibre, there are four different types of TP-Link wifi routers connected to it with cat5 cable, which runs throughout the house that has thick stone walls, hence the reason for all the routers.

I'd like to upgrade the routers as they're old and keep glitching but haven't got a notion what to replace them with. Is there any standard type of device I should be looking at to get which would be easy to change them all over too?

Are you sure the 'glitches' are due to the old routers and not the Sky Hub in the pic?

If they are all giving trouble I would be inclined to suspect the Sky Hub.

I now use Fritzbox (AVM) routers and think I will stick with them as they are easily managed in my setup.

The Sky HUB 4 has an inbuilt mesh controller. Sky can provide “boosters”. They looks quite like the hub you have in the photo but are white.

Also if you have any Sky Q products like the TV satellite receiver and the multi room Q mini boxes these will all participate the mesh if setup correctly.

Thanks Johnboy, the reason I think it's the old routers glitching is that they stop working with all the little led's flashing until I turn them off for a few minutes, then reboot them and they work fine for another couple of weeks.

I wouldn't know how to change it, but I've read that it could be caused by a compatability setting in the Sky hub box that's causing the issues in the other routers.

No idea what a mesh system is Eronayne . . sounds very futuristic. Didnt know Sky can provided boosters for this hub. If i got those would it also mean that there would be just the one named wifi with one same access password for the entire house?

Wonder how much that would cost? Be worth it though if it worked.

A deco mesh system for about €150 with 3 access points (WiFi routers) would be a good starting point. Very easy set up, plug into existing cat cable. All the routers will use the same name and password. Designed for seamless roaming around the house. Your device will connect to the strongest signal then. You can then pay as much as you want for mesh systems, but them decos are good starting point. I've used them and no issues, house is over 4,000 sq ft.

As part of the NBP I am about to order fibre broadband for the first time. Sky would have my preference as being the cheapest. However as with all things Sky I am wary I have somehow have to use their "Sky Hub". I have a perfectly fine working setup at the moment with a Synology RT2600AC as main router and some access points connected by ethernet.

I am doing my research now to make sure I can either put Sky's yoke in modem only mode ( which doesn't seem to be the case as per this thread) or not use it at all (absolutely preferred).

I saw the settings to use on one's own main router if not using Sky's. In the modem management page(SRM) I found where to put type, username and pw.. but I am unsure about "VLAN - 10"- where is that supposed to go ?

I can't see any field where I can put that.

Now, perhaps the auto-detect feature will sort it all out, that I won't know until I have the connection.. Anyone using a synology router with Sky broadband that can offer me pointers ?

I need to be sure before I order that their router can stay in the box.
