Hedge removal cost

I have been quoted €4000 to remove a 30 yr old leylandii hedge, 100ft long and 6ft high. This is to cut down to the base, chip and remove all from site. Does this sound like a reasonable quote? I have nothing to base it against so would appreciate any comments, thanks.

I'll PM you a chap who trimmed 8ft off the top of one side of mine around 50ft long last year for €300.

Needless to say I thought that was expensive and ended up doing it myself… But there's a lot more work in 100ft in fairness.

There's probably 2 long days' work in it for 2 men, plus machinery - price sounds reasonable.

What what about all those tree roots? You should think about getting in a stump grinder to finish the job.

He did say it would be two men for two days, so you are spot on. I'm happy to deal with what's left once I can see the size of the problem. I'm not sure if I will be replacing it with more suitable hedging or a fence as yet, so roots and such may be a consideration when that happens.

Not trying to be smart, but would it be worth considering doing the job yourself if you're able?

100ft of hedge is a lot, so no doubt it'll be a pain of a job. But renting a chipper and probably a trailer plus disposal is likely to come to far less than €4000

If it cost €500 for example then the savings are basically a free holiday (you'd probably need one after all that work)

What's wrong with it as it is? It's only 6ft high.

Surely if you want rid you can cut it down yourself, you can leave the stumps to rot in the ground as they won't regrow.

It took me the full weekend as I had to pull the stumps out anyway, so I used the leverage of the trunks to help. I wouldn't have had that leverage if I had paid 500 to have them cut to the stump. So there was logic behind it. 😁

That's bonkers money, I took down a 40 meter leylandii during the summer, think it was about 500 for a few lads and a wood chipper for a day to get them down to root level, then I got in a chap with digger for 300 to scoop out the roots and put them into my trailer so I could cart them away to a friendly farmer.

Luckily they didn't damage the old fence they were growing against so I've just put a windbreaker along it now for €60, what to do next I'm still trying to figure out. Thinking maybe a solar or wind turbine fence or maybe some 5/6ft Laurel. Any advice appreciated.

I had a 180 foot privet behind a griselinia hedge that hadn't been cut in 20 years. I got in with a 10inch chain saw and cut it down. Took me about 20 hours. I left the branches were they fell. It was the height of the pole in the hedge.

Griselinia is cut with a hedge cutter every year to about 20 foot. It forms a windbreaker on the mountain.

No, it’s not a typo blackbox. It’s 6 ft high, not 60ft and yes it’s 30 yrs old. Its the other side of a drive with a similar hedge, same height. It’s not the height that’s a problem, but over the years, even with good trimming back regularly, the width of the drive has gradually been reduced over the years so that it’s now getting difficult for many vehicles to get down, so one side has to go. Doing it myself is also not possible as suggested by a few folk, for reasons I won’t elaborate on here. Believe me, if I could, I would.

I appreciate and thank you for all the good comments I have received and as I suspected, the original quote was excessive. I managed to get another company to come out this afternoon and have been quoted 2,200 for the same job plus another couple of garden jobs I can’t manage.
