Feels like the right time to start a new thread for next year's gigs.
John Mayer playing the 3Arena on 29 March 2024.
You welcome it? Christ. You think it's OK to refuse people from gigs and label them perverts or creeps because they can't name more than a handful of songs or they don't give a correct answer to some part time security guard?
What a fücking terrible thing to be OK with. Venue should prove you're a creep/pervert before rejecting or ejecting you. Requiring a punter to have to prove they're not one is outrageous. Guilty until proven innocent because you're a man? Get a grip.
the security of women at concerts from creeps is more important than people being given the ground rules and put on notice that any such behaviour isn’t tolerated. Especially when this bad behaviour has happened on tour for this act. Been to plenty of venues that give such briefings to groups of a dozen at a time and sometimes to each person when paying in. See no harm in it.
It's flat out discrimination. There's a difference between giving a warning and inferring that someone is a creep or pervert unless they prove otherwise.
It's also fűcking pointless.
Do you see that there's a difference between a venue having an anti harassment policy posted on the walls that is announced at intervals to the entrance queue in general and pulling only men entering solo aside for an interrogation?
the venue was stupid in the form of it but telling the audience the ground rules at entry properly , telling them who to report such behaviour and zero tolerance is in force is not a bad thing. Guess what it’s men that are the ones being creeps at these shows for this band and at other concerts.
Ironic that someone with a pride avatar is fully behind persecuting people based on vague speculation.
It’s the default avatar on this message board. And there is no persecution of people, it’s just telling people the ground rules before entry to a venue. None of you seem to have issue that the band had to tell security to have zero tolerance because the sexual groping/harassment on the tour was so bad. Not annoyed that the sexual harassment was so bad on tour but that venue mistakenly enforced an interrogation policy.
Well, as normal you obviously have access to insider knowledge to know that it was so bad that the band issued the edict.
Any level is obviously unacceptable but the approach here is appallingly cack handed.
You're talking through your arse.
The band came out and said that the measures did not respect their beliefs and would not have been implemented had they known about them in advance.
The venue has said the measures went too far and apologised.
But hey, if you're all for gender-based discrimination, that says more about you.
TBF, The band would be in CYA mode here.
Some Muslims hate America and hijacked some planes, so deliberate targeting of all brown middle Eastern people for additional interrogation and segregation at airports is OK for farnirish I guess. Maybe extend it to buses and trains as well. Maybe a special carriage just for them?
Video here of a person at the gig and it looks like a fairly good mixture of ages and men and women.
No doubt someone at the venue is a social justice warrior and got a bit carried away.
They will be lucky not to be sued.
the band and venue has said that the interrogation occurred in error cause the band manager warned the venue of sexual harassment/groping incidents happening in the tour so far. Yes the venue went overboard.
“The venue has apologised, saying the policy was in response to information they'd received about "incidents" at a previous gig, but they acknowledged it resulted in "the unacceptable treatment of some guests".
Some Venues in Dublin already tell people upon entry about their safe space policies and that’s should be done for every venue. Telling people the ground rules upon entry isn’t discrimination.
You seem more concerned about being told the rules than the fact that sexual harassment was so bad the band had to tell venues to be on top of it.
You're conflating things to walk back what you said and welcomed.
Telling people about a safe space and the ground rules is not something anyone here (that I have seen) has a problem with. I certainly don't.
Telling a single man that they have to prove they're not a creep or a pervert through a pop quiz to gain entry is gender based discrimination.
In your own words, you welcome interrogating lads before a gig to put the fear of god into them. I've read some bűllshit in my time on Boards, but that is way up there.
Can a seperate thread be opened to talk about this incident? It feels like we're going to get pages more of it.
There's a big difference between "telling the audience the ground rules at entry properly , telling them who to report such behaviour and zero tolerance is in force is not a bad thing" and singling out individuals for special attention. One is fine because it's directed at everybody the other is bordering on harassment.
Your later quote suggests that the band informed the venue of previous incidents not that they asked for a zero tolerance approach.
"it’s just telling people the ground rules before entry to a venue". Again the reports would suggest that a lot more than this happened.
Not only bordering on harassment, gender-based discrimination is literally illegal.
Smells like a publicity stunt to me and it’s working……
I've two free tickets for Martin McAloon (Prefab Sprout's bass player, brother of Paddy) in Liberty Hall tonight for anyone who wants them.
Was reading about that on the socials. Bit mad. Feels like pigeonholing of middle aged men who attend gigs on their own. The implication, I assume, being that they're some sort of perverts/weirdos.
I'm afraid I am that middle aged male! I would hope I'm not perceived as a 'default' weirdo just cos I go to gigs on my own. Bottom line is no-one else will go along with me!
yep, join the club.
Woah. Imagine they cancelled all middle age male solo gig goers. Boards is gone for a start.
You’ll all be very welcome in Moydrum. 😉
It’s very relevant to our gig-going lives and how we expect people to be treated in venues so no, there’s no need for a separate thread. A general point on this is that you don’t solve a problem by using discriminatory behaviour against (almost certainly) entirely innocent people. The legal ramifications of such actions by venues are not good. In this case the band (and legal/PR team) are very aware of this hence their speedy disassociation from such idiotic behaviour.
Ah the posting got a bit frantic earlier, 30 posts in a short time etc. It's a topic that probably should be debated in more detail. As long as it's in another thread, miles away from me 🤣 Save this thread for actual gigs, not the security of gigs.
You can sift through them, as I did. This topic, and others related to our gig-going (dynamic pricing, touting, security issues, new venues, unreliability of particular performers, etc) are all relevant to this thread.
Sligo Live Festival line up.
Mmm mmm mmm mmm
Check out 'Dave Lofts' in Cork who is supporting them there on the 1st Nov
Caught him at ATN and he was really good
