First, let me say there are people on this forum who will clearly hate this as it won't do Dublin-Cork, won't fit 7 people and won't do 140. This car isn't for you.

Well, I say car, but they've called it a "non-conformist mobility object". You can roll your eyes now.

It's a tiny and cheap car. 2 seats. 45km/h. 70km range. €6,000. 6kW (8hp) motor, meaning, in France, it can be driven by people as young as 14 without a licence.

Costs cut so much that the left and right doors are exactly the same, meaning one is hinged at the front and the other at the back. Minimal gauge cluster in front of the wheel. If you want extra stuff normally displayed on a central screen, you use your phone running an app and placed in a holder on the dash.

I did a test drive of an Ami as a family member was interested… it was a rainy day and I found the visibility poor. The side mirrors are not regular car size ones but more like motorbike \ moped ones.
The wipers weren't great, and to stop the mirrors steaming up I put on the 'blower' which made a noise like a travel hairdryer.
Would be very slow defrosting on a winter morning I'd imagine.

It would be very sluggish at roundabouts for example, or travelling on any > 50 kmh roads (which you might have to to get to and from dealers given their usual locations).

Maybe for someone used to a moped it'd be an easier transition, or in sunnier climes just for nipping around narrow city streets or down to the local beach.

There are a few Amis coming up for sale from dealers asking €7995 now. Would still like one, but only if the price drops hugely from there

In the meantime, if anyone sees a G-Wiz / Reva that has some issues like a dodgy battery or other electronics for a few hundred quid, let me know please!

As far as I can tell, taxis seem to be handing their cars in for scrappage after 3 years to avail of the grant again. Most of them are perfectly functioning cars that the govt could sell to the public and make a tidy sum of money off

Agree. 9k for a novelty as a new 242 plate is somewhat acceptable as you couldn't really even get a used EV with that money that has realistic range anyway (awaits a barrage of ex taxi EVs), 17k is a joke in and of itself

Yes the top speed is governed to 45, but the power output is the limit. If it were 4kW or below you could drive on an AM licence but it's 6kW.

Yes it's 2kW of power output over the limit of an AM license. Doesn't change the fact that the vehicle classification (which is different from the license category) is not a category B (or strictly speaking, category M) vehicle.

I would not say its stupid money. I think if that came at that price here for what you get it would actually be very good value compared to the Ami.

Well anyone wanting to drive an AMI here will need a full category B driving licence so it might as well be a catagory B but yes it really should be a catagory AM. But hey that's Rip off Ireland for you.

It does not need an NCT, it is not a car but a quadricycle. The same as the twizy doesn't need an NCT. It's category B that needs an NCT and quadricyles are category AM

Cuts need to be made but further incentives for middle and upper class families to buy a new EV would not be palatable IMO.

Cuts likely would be a percentage point cut to USC, an increase on the PAYE band thresholds, probable return for the cost of living energy payments, and an increase to JSB/JSA payments, including possibly focusing on higher payments for those who recently lost high paying jobs. Not that I agree with most of those, but that's what I think is likely. There's a whole politics thread for this though (https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058370828/budget-2025) so I'll keep the rest of my comments for that.

WRT the Ami I think it's actually well priced for what it is. It is similarly cheap as the twizy was (allowing for inflation), but the twizy here had a battery rental to pay too.

Saw 2 of these on separate occasions in Italy last week. A right little dinger for a city car. Tis a pity it's stupidly expensive here... hopefully there's a nice surprise in tomorrow budget which results in a lower cost to buy.

It's annoying but the cheapest ones used in Europe are 7k and in the UK they are 5k (STG) plus there's vat etc from the UK. VRT would (afaik) not be zero as it's too cheap to qualify for the grant. It would be cheaper to buy the new one here than buy either of the used ones and pay for transport.

€120 motor tax lol and a full B category driving licence required to drive it even do it's a quadricycle what a joke.

My Electric Trike can go faster, does not need a full license and I can drive it by myself oh and my tax is cheaper 🙂 .

I also have electric windows, ventilated disc brakes all around, really nice alloy wheels, a proper seat that is leather too and a reversing camera 🙂 . Oh and it's fun to drive. You can do 360s and 180s in it sometimes intentionally and sometimes not lol. Not that I would encourage it not at all.

Also you can get electric Trikes that do 60kph but not sure if the tax would be more on them.
