I find it interesting (probably the only one!) that Radio Nova is now on air for 14 years and three of the original weekday presenters are still there in the weekday schedule. They are Marty Miller, Greg Gaughren and Pat Courtenay. I know that none of them are in their original slots, but it is pretty rare these days in radio for that number to stay that long on the weekday schedule.
While I am here, I should point out (in case you are wondering) that Dee Woods, another current weekday presenter, did not initially have any regular slot on the station's schedule. However, I know she was with Nova and, if memory serves me right, was covering news and/or sports and could be heard often. I stand corrected on this but I think Dee's first regular slot was on the weekend when she took over from Breffni Clack. My main point here is that, notwithstanding the fact that she was not on the original schedule, Dee Woods is the fourth current weekday presenter that has been there since the start of Radio Nova, which is impressive too.
Anyone get weird feedback on Nova at times? The noise is like a quick push of a needle off a record, but it's very, very quick and not as high pitched. It's been happening a lot the last week for me.
I wasn't going to ask about it, but we just got an attempted phonecall on air over Brucey there a minute ago. I'm assuming it's Marty making a dogs dinner of it, and am now wondering is he responsible for the weird feedback.
I'm not an anorak, (although, do have a grey rain jacket mind you), but I do appreciate your posts and the information shared within.
I’ll raise my hand up to say anorak here!
It is for the anoraks out there…probably in short supply these days.
while i am glad for kieran mcguinness and think he's a great DJ, his show is hardly a specialist show?
What's the obsession with listing presenters who worked where ?
Not bad...
The only frequency relatively close is 100.0 of Today FM from Truskmore. Otherwise 100.3 is pretty much "unobstructed".
I will use this opportunity to list all the presenters currently with Radio Nova who have previously been with 98FM and/or FM104! For starters, it includes practically all the weekday presenters: Jim McCabe, Marty Miller, Dee Woods, Pat Courtenay and Greg Gaughren. Then over the weekend you can include: Matt Dempsey, Mark Noble, Paul McGuinness and Andy Clarke. Also, CEO Kevin Brannigan was behind the scenes at FM104.
that wouldn’t surprise me at all. It’s a straight shoot from Three Rock with nothing much in the way. Wouldn’t make a massive difference in this instance but Nova also use more power than the other ‘Dublin’ stations from the same site.
Never tried them as their music doesn’t interest me.
What about 98 FM and FM104? Do they make it this far as well?
Can get a good signal from Nova past Longford towards Sligo and during the clear weather a couple of weeks ago it reached Ballisodare in Sligo!
Maybe that's the explanation.
However it also seems the signal is stronger compared to say about one year ago.
Not that I am aware, but there has been a change in audio processing in the last year.
Just curious, did the 100.3 from Three Rock increase power during the last year or so? The signal appeared weaker at some point before and seems stronger now.
Cool to hear Duff McKagan (and Susan Holmes McKagan) give Nova a shout out at his gig tonight.
You probably did not see my last post as it was around the same time as yours. I agree that much of the selection is way beyond classic rock and that is an issue. But I did add that the selection does tend to be rock-oriented (in a more general sense). Duran Duran is vaguely rock oriented but is definitely a grey area. Soft Cell and Depeche Mode fit into electro pop rock and even alternative rock at times (especially post-Vince Clarke Depeche Mode). George Ezra and Dermot Kennedy? No excuses for them!
Just don't listen.
I don't understand this mentality of subjecting yourself for extended periods to something you find so triggering, just to moan about it on the internet and get slaps on the back from other like-minded masochistic moaners.
But they play
Duran Duran
Soft Cell
Depeche Mode
George Ezra
Dermot Kennedy
Not really classic rock, more like Classic Hits, good job they share the same building, they can share their cd collection as well
It is true that there the music selection has been stretched way beyond classic rock which is an issue, but it always tends to be rock oriented. That is why you will never hear pure soul or pure r 'n'b or pure funk. Hence, you will not hear Easy by the Commodores. Whatever about the merits of Faith No More's version, it is rock.
...but they play a lot of stuff that isn't remotely classic rock.
John Farnam was on Nova today, don't think I've head that before. An Australian influence from Clint the now PD perhaps?
"When we were young" - thank you Kieran McGuinness!
So why do they play "Faith no More's version then, given that it's shite?
They do not fall within the remit of their licence, particularly The Commodores' Easy. The license is for classic rock.
Both songs' length. Then to go to an Ad Break or Play Grade B quality song, then play Grade C quality song
Would love to know what Nova have against playing the originals of "Easy like a Sunday morning" and Harry Chapin's "The cat's in the cradle".
Mandinka by Sinead O'Connor was played to death during the summer on the ad for Ladies' GAA.
