Feels like the right time to start a new thread for next year's gigs.
John Mayer playing the 3Arena on 29 March 2024.
They're announcing 1st one on Monday. Just posted on their socials.
Too many presenters talking sxxx instead of playing music .
Yeah I have to admit there is far too much talk radio in Ireland rather than concentrating on music.
Funnily enough I'm fairly confident I heard all of the above first on Irish radio but that's probably down to Richie McCormack or Tom Dunne who go out of their way to promote and play that kind of stuff.
Creedon, Late Date, South Wind Blows, Mystery Train etc some of the exceptions. But agree mainstream daytime radio lot of talk and filler.
Talking about lack of radio for Irish talent a few weeks ago with someone (can’t remember who, otherwise I’d double check which station. They said that one station has introduced a programme once a week showcasing Irish bands. FM106?
Dublin City FM have a slot showcasing Irish talent, Tilt.
https://www.dublincityfm.ie/shows/tilt/
And the whole show is put on Spotify (and, I think, mixcloud) the day after. Highly recommend
And, to bring it back to live music, he also curates a free Irish showcase in the button factory...
Paul McLoone was also great for that but it’s very rare that music is devoted to young (and often unsigned acts). Certainly nothing I’ve heard in the daytime.
There’s also Cian Ó Cíobháin on RnG, and surprisingly Marty Whelan on Lyric regularly pushing new releases by more mainstream but decent Irish acts (Gemma Hayes, Ultan Colin, Muireann Bradley, etc). At the very least the RTE remit could be altered to force the playing of more local acts. And I agree with @bodhrandude that there’s far too much talk radio here. I’d not object were it of a high standard but………
8 radio, Internet but Irish, good for young Irish bands and do a new music spotify playlist each week that regularly has Irish music on it. They play great music.
For those going to Melts make sure you're in for the support act, pôt-pot. Lots of VU/BJM/Kraut goodness.
Ah, I believe you’ve mentioned this station before, and I foolishly only listened once. By the sounds of it this is perfect fare for the Boardsie EP/ATN/music obsessive contingent and we’ve kinda got an obligation to popularise it. Second listening to take place tomorrow.
Gawd, listened to a certain radio station this afternoon well not listened on the background and they were going on about chicken nuggets and sangwiches..for 30 mins ...
Thought "this is why I don't listen to the radio anymore " and switched off .
John Creedon is surprisingly good though whenever I catch it .
They are that one band that blew me away seeing them live. Friend had a ticket going spare a few years ago for their 3Arena gig.
Wasn’t too pushed but coming out of it I was a fully signed up Libertines fanboy.
Used to be a regular listener to Kelly-Anne Byrne's The Beat Goes On on Today FM when it was going too.
At the risk of turning this in to a radio thread - Raidió na Life is a not for profit station based in Dublin. Evening and night time is very much focussed on Reggae/Dub, Drum & Bass, Electronic and completely obscure music. Gem of a station.
Pot-pot 8.15, Melts 9.15.
Thanks @Dreamweapon that's what I suspected few start at 8 these days
I'll keep an eye out for you Mucker.
I'd agree about that. When I get a chance, I will stream their (8 radio) stuff.
I very much miss Paul Mc Loone's show on Today FM. He introduced me to a lot of stuff. Many's the dark, bleak evening, driving home from another bad day in the hospital during Covid-19, he really cheered me up/lifted me.
Miss his show. Presume got axed as too outré?
This, too. Assume she's gone for same reason as Paul McLoone?
Get a run of weekends on fm in Cork limerick Galway and Dublin a few times a year would love them on all the time. Have app on phone so listen regularly
Ditto
She just gave it up at the time as she couldn't find a place affordable to rent in Dublin and moved to Glasgow I think.
A combination of reasons. One of which is that he may not have fully endeared himself to his employers. Met him and his partner at Ash in Monroe’s last December and he was very chatty. Said he was very keen to get into radio again and had a small opportunity coming up but wasn’t optimistic about it. He played a lot of unsigned bands or those with on small independent labels. Would love him back.
I'll never forget the day that TXFM 105.2 (formerly Phantom FM) ceased broadcasting. At the end of the very last show they played the Day After the Revolution by Pulp. When the song ended static was all you could hear. It took listening to the static for a few minutes to realise it had actually happened. The only station really worth listening to for many years previous was dead. The static was like a life support being switched off. I cried in the car. Dramatic ha but that's how it was.
Absolutely love getting 8 Radio those few times a year now on FM on the old 105.2 frequency. It would be great if 8 Radio could get a permanent FM licence.
Same person behind both. The app through your phone is really good so get to listen a lot
Yes, Simon. Fair **** to him to keep flying the flag. I can only imagine the amount of hassle and bureaucracy keeping an Irish indie station alive
