Chromecast's successor. Wasn't aware of this until a video from Android Authority popped up (don't usually watch them).
I got an email from them this evening about the new streamer, €119
Think I might buy one, shame we don't seem to be getting the grey version the US have as an exclusive from Google.
White/cream here?
Had one in the basket last night, but didn't order as I was home late enough. That, and I want to watch the review again. It was saying delivery approx October 30-31, plus suggesting having an email alert to get notified.
Seems to be out of stock this morning, btw.
Reading some user reviews in the states on Reddit it doesn't do proper audio passthrough if your using an av amp etc and users saying it's quite sluggish to use. They seem to think Google focused more on the AI/threads aspects then the streaming side. Might hold fire and wait to see if they optimize it with updates.
I'll consider it when it's on sale in a few months
bit disappointing that its not that much more powerful than the CCWGTV 4k.
Best to hold fire based on reading this if you want iPlayer etc not working in the UK same if side loaded etc
Google Streamer 4k Issues for UK Users
Just a cautionary note for those in the UK wishing to pick one of these up.
I had enough credit on the Google Store after buying a phone that I could pick one of these up. If I'd spent £100 on it directly, I'd probably be a bit annoyed.
boards.ie brought to you by Reddit 😁
Yeah couldn't post the reddit link for some reason Reddit blocks it. Just wanted to get info out there as I was very close to pulling the trigger and ordering it.
yeah better holding off for a bit but don't think it's that impressive anyway for the price.
there's homatics/dune boxes that are supposed to be decent or the apple tv
Good review and it features benchmarks and shortcomings of the Google Streamer from TechDoctorUK
doesnt look great tbh
These are now available in Harvey Normans in Swords - €119.00
Black Friday is getting close. The Google store usually have discounts
Has anyone switched from an Apple TV to this device? We have an Apple TV at home and it works great but we are an Android houshold so may switch.
What's your usage on the Apple TV? Is it just streaming apps like Netflix YouTube etc? I'm not sure you will gain anything switching to this over the Apple TV
yes, streaming and watching tv (eir).
Not being able to show photo screen shows from Google photos is the main annoyance of the Apple TV.
Did anyone go with this device so far?
Yep, I got one, have it about a month now. A little bit snapier than the dongle but not a huge noticable difference in performance. The remote has a different layout so thats taking a little bit of time to get used to
Yes, got one before Christmas. Very happy with it, much quicker than the Chromecast and zero buffering.
Does the fuction were you stoped watching something work with rte/tg4 apps?
Sorry, I haven't used either of those apps but id imagine it works the exact same way as the dongle
Yes on the RTE Player, don't know about the TG4 one.
Just got my box today and can't event install / find the rte player on the store!
Looks like my Chromecast Gen 2 has been bricked by a global firmware issue. :(
That's a pain. I like my Chromecast audio. Just plug it in to speakers and no need for an extra screen to be powered on to use it. And it's got optical out. Hopefully they fix it. There is a reason they dropped Chromecast audio ... they wanted everyone to buy more expensive screen based streaming devices. Probably as another channel for ads too.
I just fixed it using the GUI method below here
https://www.reddit.com/r/Chromecast/comments/1j7lhrs/the_chromecast_2s_device_authentication/?share_id=nLbqDMaWQPESrmwp_peTG&utm_content=2&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1
That looks like far too much work for me. I might do it when I have time but are there any other HDMI devices you can buy that work like Chromecast with an Android phone? Mine is an S24 FE so it's not that old. My Chromecast (second generation) packed in a couple of days ago as well and I keep reading online about a "firmware update" from google that will fix it but I'm sceptical I must say.I am not buying the The Google TV Streamer. There must be something cheaper out there that works the same.
It took me 3 minutes
I didn't read the full post on the reddit link; I thought you had to do all the steps. I just did the GUI method and that fixed it. Even though the instructions said it was for Android 11 and my phone is Android 14 it still worked.
I have two Chromecasts and when it stopped working I foolishly did a factory reset on one of them. I was able to undo that by setting the date on the phone back to before the 11th March and re-adding the Chromecast then.
I am back in business on both of them. I'd say Google won't bother issuing a bug fix, they will want people to buy the Google TV Streamer.
