Nobody but Tiger has been as consistent in this tough game.
I do appreciate the lack of few majors adds questions but ya got appreciate greatness too. And thats what he is.
Long overdue
Really enjoyed that. His putting was excellent all weekend.
yep ones it’s not in a major.
Huge respect and Congratulations to Rory. When he's on song, he's simply the best in the world.
Six time Race to Dubai Champion!
Fabulous last 3 holes from Rory. Great win under pressure. His wedge play was excellent this week
He’s after driving the par 4 14th at Kingsbarn.
with Macintyre on the green lining up a birdie putt. He not happy.
Rightly.
Luckily the putt dropped.
And if he had a caddy that was allowed give his opinion he probably would have put that club in his bag.
The caddy thing is holding him back in my opinion. Having a conversation before the shot, every shot, whether it's simple or takes some thinking about is a great thing whether it changes your mind or not. The last thing the caddy always does is tell you he likes it and you are more comfortable hitting it. If you don't have that then you may take bigger risks and you know it standing over the ball and that's not helping you.
An example would be where they are looking at going for it on a par five. Rory says he thinks it's a 2 iron, the caddy thinks it's too much club because there's trouble over the back. So he simply says 'so long as we don't go over the back we are fine'. Now Rory has to think about it. If he's confident it won't go over he tells the caddy that and the caddy says okay, sounds good and gives him the line and walks away.
Rory is more comfortable now and is far more likely to hit a smoother two iron and it's more likely to work out.
For me the biggest weakness I see in Rory's game is that he's hitting the ball way too hard with his medium to short irons. You give up a lot of control and accuracy too often when you hit the ball that hard. You can take one more playing within yourself, sky it, which Rory is better at than most golfers, and it'll be a lot more likely to be within 20 feet. That will eliminate those mistakes that are costing him a lot of tournament wins.
Obviously he needs somebody to help with those missed short putts which seems to have happened too often since the US Open but that's pretty simple to fix.
McGinley has become a straight up honest commentator. He credits Rory when he deserves it and criticises him when he deserves it unlike all the others in the commentary box who fawn over him whether he has an eagle or a double bogey.
Dunno if it's been mentioned here already but an interesting rule I wasn't aware of is a player can swap in a club for the play off. So Rory could actually have put in another club for the play-off that would have given him another option of reaching 18 more comfortably
Good summation there. Depending on line taken off tee and conditions he was leaving himself with 220 to 250 all week. Had 250 in on Day 1 also and he bogeyed. Thought he might have tried 5 wood approach on one of the longer ones but maybe wasn't in the bag?
It was a superb afternoon's golf. I thought Rory's predicament on the 18th was fascinating. By being the longer player, he had to lay up as he couldn't use the driver and was then short of Billy. That's compounded by not having a club for the distance left. His 3rd attempt at the hole was superb. Still, you felt Billy could play those two shots into 18 all day long and he was going to eagle it at some stage. Billy is 4 under for the 3 holes, Rory 'only' 2 under. And that's that……
Was it bad bag management by Rory not having a pair of clubs to easily (given his distance) reach the 18th? Was the driving iron referred to a 2 iron?
You just knew that when the commentators were saying that you wanted to putt first, the guy putting 2nd was going to win! Thought McGinley was very snarky about Rory too. Is there history there?
There was a nonsense sectarian reference to men of a certain type of citrus fruit. Nothing other than trying to stir the pot.
why?
I should have written ‘I didn’t miss it’. Lowry’s bipolar behaviour has long been a gripe of mine.
Cheers for your concession but I would have thought referee back-chat would be part of that footballification (along with, ‘Get in the hollllle’).
Fair enough. At least you're not one of the footballification golf fans of which we have many.
I did miss it, and I deplore it.

you observe lowry's behaviour in British open. Missed that ,did you?
Mod Edit
Warning issued.
Just a minor observation but I think it could have made a crucial difference if Billy had to putt first on the final hole ..and there can't have been much in it. Not disputing the merit of his win at all -there's no arguing with a clinching eagle.
IIt was a superb tournament with a gripping finish ...sport at its best.
The season that couldve been..
Dubai Invitational
Dubai Desert Classic (w)
Zurich Classic Orleans (w)
Wells Fargo (w)
US Open
Irish Open
BMW PGA
If ifs and buts were candy and nuts…. etc
This 100%...Laura Davies and wayne reilly both said that was the wrong decision...but overall you have to say this is a tournament he didn't throw away for once
Horschel’s behaviour towards the referee is just characteristically American. I can imagine a dozen other of them talking like that.
Don’t go for the pin from 253yd with a 4 Iron on the 72nd hole
Always seems to happen Rory, Tiger woods often shot 70 on Sunday to win by 3, Mcilroy never gets it easy, losing to birdie eagle in a playoff, what more can you do.
Some putt from Billy.
Ah #### it! Billy wins with eagle on the 2nd play-off hole. These knocks of not getting over the line aren't going to do Rory's confidence any good.
Not much wrong from Rory there, brilliant from Horschel super putt
What more can you do really?
