Got email from Sky https://www.sky.com/shop/pre-reg/mobile
Only problem is, it doesnt recognise Irish mobile phone numbers :-)
It's not really about the speed tbh, both Eir and Three have faster 5G speeds than Vodafone. Vodafone just has wider coverage. It's not 5G coverage, but if you are somewhere rural in a small village, you will probably have signal with VF.
OTP texts now sorted so hats off to Sky, At least that’s sorted.
Yep working for me too. Have to say atleast they care, other networks like Virgin, Tesco and even some of the big 3 have 2FA/OTP issues ongoing for years. Sky got it sorted in days.
Out of curiosity, has anyone done any Sky vs. Vodafone speed tests? I'm curious to see if we actually get the exact same speed as the direct Vodafone network. The speed is very good on Sky for me anyways, but I'm curious to see if we get the same as direct Vodafone.
Still no iMessage or 2FA codes arriving. Can't login to renew my learners permit.
That must be driving you nuts.
It is frustrating, I will more than likely be leaving because of these two simple issues.
All hunky dory with Sky now after 3 weeks.Everyone moves
You would need to contact the Sky press office or commercial manager.I doubt they will tell you.I imagine a year and it will up for consideration.
Will there SIMS work in a phone that is locked to Vodafone ?
I can’t say for sure but I’d guess not, based on the different MCC-MNC codes.
But remember three and their €15 hero plan. Was around for a short while only and never been repeated.
I'd think once they get up and running and new signups slow down, they'll hike the price and offer half price to anyone already with sky etc.
I just ported from the Three Hero plan. I'm thinking Three could well reintroduce it to compete.
Although thinking about it, the 48.ie €12.99 plan is now the Hero plan, since they went unlimited data recently. Albeit it only includes 14GB EU/UK data roaming, which is same as Three Hero. Whereas Sky mobile is unlimited in that regard.
I just compared some speed tests I performed via Vodafone unlimited data SIM back in April. Download/upload practically like for like Sky vs Vodafone.
However latency is about double for Sky!
Vodafone average 34ms
Sky average 60ms
I find the latency to be worse, and the DNS points to a server to the UK so it will be slower.
@EryykTV I double checked and yes you are right! I eyeballed one of.my broadband tests by accident when viewing the latency.
I'm going to edit my post. Thanks!
Only difference is 48 does not support VoLTE or Wi-Fi calling.
I want to get an eSim - is there a specific phone number I need to call to sign up and get it? I don't see one on the site
Does changing DNS to something else (Google or Cloudflare etc. if you think the former do do evil) improve it?
You can ring 0818 500 109.
I rang and asked earlier in the week, it's not available at all at the moment while they figure out some issues. I went with the regular sim in the end. Just waiting for it to arrive.
How long are physical sim cards taking to arrive for people in the post?
I ordered a physical sim in the Sky Store Dundrum on Monday. I couldn't believe they didn't have them in store.
The MySky App is saying it was delivered on Monday, but it still hasn't arrived today.
There is an option under 'My Orders' in the MySky App to re-order if it hasn't come after 3 working days. Have people had to avail of this option for the sim card to come in the post or are they all just delayed with roll out?
there's such huge demand that it's taking a couple days longer than expected for them to be Delivered
In MySky, it just says in progress for the last 5 days.
GoMo does for the same monthly price, by the way, if that interests you. I just find the Eir network to be spotty in my general area of Limerick/Clare. It's super fast where I live and work, but it drops the connection often enough for me as I drive and listen to online radio and Deezer during my commute to piss me off. This was the same pretty much when I was with Eir proper. And that's even with 5G "coverage" en route. I stayed for the price, to be honest, as I'm not a heavy enough user to justify paying more than 20 per month for a SIM-only plan, and I always buy my phones outright. I reckon Vodafone is better for consistency, so this is why I hopped on board with Sky - coverage and price.
Good question. Most likely it would if you use a fast DNS server with Irish peering. I've always used the Private DNS setting on my Android to do this since it became a feature. You can add regular unencrypted DNS IP addresses to a WiFi connection in Android but not to a mobile connection, so you have to ensure your Private DNS being used to override that. I personally use dns.quad9.net, but you can also use one.one.one.one or dns.google if you prefer. I honestly don't know about iOS in this regard. You can't even natively use DoT or DoH on macOS (even Sequoia) that I know of.
Did you have to do anything in order to get iMessage working? My number was ported over, but iMessage is not working.
Ended up cancelling, ported my number out to Three via their eSIM. Too many issues with Sky Mobile and I cannot be arsed.
Tried to port back to Vodafone but won't let me do it, some issue with their website, had this issue in the past, have to file a GDPR request and delete my account and then I can make a new order.
I find the checkouts on all the main providers' websites to be extremely buggy, and that includes Vodafone. I don't know how they manage to screw it up so badly and so consistently!
