That's be basic operation of DRS. The basic premise - the reason it is a thing in the first instance - is to "properly" measure the amount of items sold, versus the amount of items returned with the aim of reaching a specific EU target of returns. Why is this number important - I don't really know to be honest. It's a percentage figure so doesn't car about the numbers of items in circulation or increases in these numbers.
The basic premise of a levey/tariff - the reason it is a thing in the first instance - regulate the provision of a specific item or service - is just that.
The higher the levy, the less profits the organisations involved make and the more likely they are to investigate/fund/implement alternative options.
But this nonsense we are doing at the moment, is more pointless by the day.
The biggest soft drinks companies alone make global profits in the tens of billions annually - does anyone really think that they will make changes to how they do business unless they are forced into it?
Coca Cola:
CocaCola annual gross profit for 2023 was $27.234B, a 8.92% increase from 2022.
CocaCola annual gross profit for 2022 was $25.004B, a 7.32% increase from 2021.
CocaCola annual gross profit for 2021 was $23.298B, a 18.98% increase from 2020
PepsiCo:
Pepsico annual gross profit for 2023 was $49.59B, a 8.24% increase from 2022.
PepsiCo annual gross profit for 2022 was $45.816B, a 8.06% increase from 2021.
PepsiCo annual gross profit for 2021 was $42.399B, a 9.91% increase from 2020.
I doubt Unilever are far behind them and we all know the profit levels at large Alcoholic drinks companies.

I haven't read the whole thread so I'm sure this has been mentioned but have you noticed the complete load of **** who won't leave you go to the top of the queue to get your money? Particularly in Lidl or Aldi. It happened 5 times now where I dropped off my cans and got my receipt but the person unloading their 4 full trolleys on to the belt won't leave you go ahead for your 2 second transaction to get your money! It's really something the staff should be versed on too if they see someone trying to cash in.
Its gone so bad now that I don't even ask anymore I just barge right up to the top. Anyone else experience this?
No but I can see why staff potentially won't facilitate it. Retailers have been promised footfall for paying RVM costs up front. They want you to buy something. This is also why we wont get IBAN deposit refunds. Add it to why aluminium was needlessly included. Greed and gombeenery. Pure and simple.

Your right about beer companies, the likes of Heineken and Inbev are huge global players.
Maybe the task of bringing them into line is better left to the EU.

For my part I'll just continue to do my best and hope not to lose out on DRS.

We are the EU. This DRS scheme is in response to an EU mandated target......there's nothing unilateral about what I am suggesting, what you'll find however is intense levels of political interference, PR and Marketing to maintain the status quo so that these companies are absolved of all responsibilities in this area as they are with this current farce.
Well we are full members of the EU but all the other members have a say too.
Sorry if I took you up wrong but I thought you were suggesting that we could reduce the use of PET and ALU by taxing it in Ireland.
We were could as well have done similar in the past and have control over our taxation but it would need EU level support were we to put a dent in the actual problem that all of this is ultimately trying to solve......

Anyway, this DRS scam is unreal. I've never had a positive experience with it. Is there ever a possible positive experience? When all you ever get back is money you've been scammed out of.
There's people making a profit from this scam. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. These must be among those that are willing to protect this $¢&m.
Queued up today in Lidl, to exchange a whopping 3 items, and receive 65¢. I had to wait over 5 minutes for 2 Eastern Europeans, who had shopping trolleys full of black sacks full of bottles and cans.
I see it all the time, and I want to ask, where TF have you got this from? But, I don't. I have the photos, but would get done for GDPR offences if I posted. 2 of them, both with equal amounts of waste. Both wearing gloves, every item they put in the machine was different. I suspect they're bin men, I could be well wrong. But I know for certain it wasn't home waste.
€36. Again, that wasn't the end, it just kept going. That was when I was able to sneak a photo. And the other lad was making the same.

Don't understand the issue - either the returns go into the green bin and recycled at waste with Return keeping the deposit paid or someone enterprising makes a little on the side - it's an issue for the bin companies to address if they don't want their staff doing this or, its impacting on the time they take to make their collections.
The WTF really do pile up in Lidl. I'm fascinated by some of the stuff people buy. I'm dying to ask but I guess it's just rude and none of my business. Still can't help wondering…..
Case in point last week. A couple with a small trolley with over 100 bottles of bolognaise sauce, maybe 30 boxes of tea bags and about the same number of porridge oats canisters …. and nothing else. The stuff was falling out of the small trolley so why not get a large trolley???
I guess it must be some form of catering but why, oh why buy the bolognaise sauce? Surely it would be cheaper to make your own in large quantities? I was on the point of asking but they looked pretty furtive so I desisted. I guess I'm just nosey :-)

I usually go with the flow and give things a chance, and the benefit of the doubt but I can't agree that this is working fine. I've had nothing but hassle with it and lost quite a few deposits as a result. Labelling anybody with issues concerning the scheme as nonstop moaners is more than a bit disingenuous.

Well at least you've posted something worth debating this time. There are all kinds of issues that dont line up with your description of Re-Turn already discussed in this thread. E.g. do you think home delivery should still have deposits charged? for those who dont / cant drive or are house bound or should they just eat the loss?

Lidl still playing the vouchers have expired game once over 45 days, argued the point, oh you'll have to wait for a manager…over 5 mins later still no sign of them and a steadily building queue
The only way they’re likely to know the age of a voucher is if their system rejects it. Unless they scrutinise each voucher first. It suggests that Lidl’s voucher system is not fit for purpose and doesn’t comply with DRS terms. Alternatively, the employee is talking rubbish (hopefully not with the intention of claiming the deposit themselves).
There are only two players in that game in the whole country. You and that shop.
There is no expiry date on the vouchers.
If your local shop is trying to impose a time limit they are in breach of DRS rules.
Options include -
1 Make sure to use them in less than 45 days
2 Complain to Lidl HQ
3 Complain to Re-turn HQ
It's your money and they have no right to with old it.

It's only a small extra effort to copy the complaint to Re-turn.
I'm not guaranteeing a result but it has to be worth a shot.
