Installing 16amp socket

Hi guys looking for advice on installing a socket for a big electric saw that cuts logs.

16amp plug / Single Phase Electricity. IMPORTANT! THIS MACHINE CANNOT BE USED WITH STANDARD 3PIN 13AMP PLUG AND SOCKET NOR WITH A 13-16AMP ADAPTOR. IT REQUIRES A 16AMP SOCKET AND PLUG.

The saw will be located in a yard shed which is about 60m from the electrical fuse board.

What type cable do I need to run to the new socket from the board?

Can I wire it into the board on an existing B20 mcb which has other regular sockets on it?

Thats a how long is a piece of string question based on info provided

60m is a long way for that type of load . So supply cable would need to be adequate

Presumably this cable will be buried so it needs to be armoured, it will also probably need to be derated for cable voltage drop.

This really looks like a job for a spark as it needs correctly specifying and correctly installing.

2.5mm2 still OK for 50-60 metres?

Is it OK to wire it into existing B20 mcb which has other regular sockets on it?

I am thinking of putting the socket at the back of house and using a 25m long 2.5mm2 extention lead to bring it out the yard.

I'm not an electrician but to do the job right and more importantly safe it will cost a lot more than the actual saw but it'll be a once off cost and a job for life. You will save a lump of cash by doing some of the manual labour yourself.

Once your electrician specifies the correct size SWA cable and marks preferred route etc. you can open the trench which must be at least 450mm deep, lay cable and back fill again roughly 300 mm first then lay warning tape before completing the back fill. Your electrician will fit a mini sub board in shed, try to keep the length of extension lead from socket in shed to saw as short as possible.

Consider fitting a few lights in shed while you're at it, you may even be able to cut your logs inside if the weather is inclement which is not unheard of in winter…or summer 😉

… but this is way outside the scope of what is allowed in the regulations for a DIYer.

I did this and saw works great.

Asked the lads in the wholesalers about the cable and they told me what I needed for the length of run and power required. Didn't realise there's great expertise behind the counter there.

Used about 30m of 6mm cable, kept it all indoors through sheds hanging on simple coat hooks from the rafters . Put the 16amp breaker on fuse board it simply clicked on.

The level of expertise varies, and the role of any good employee of an electrical wholesaler is to sell products - as many as possible at the highest possible price. They are typically incentivised with bonus structures. Most will have little or no training on the factors than influence cable selection.

But, on the info provided: The cable size and circuit protection is probably adequate. The breaker should be an RCBO type with a test button - that’s important.
