Dublin 15 Historic Pictures Thread

Hi all, this thread is for users to post pictures from the D15 area highlighting some of the historic places or people that came from here.
When posting, identify the place and if you know any of the history around it, let usknow that too.

I'll get the ball rolling, if anyone wants to follow, work away.

Here's a photo of Ashtown Crossroads from 1948.

In the centre we have the Ashtown Tin Box company, which is where DG Gowan are now. I think the box co. are now located at a far smaller premises in Finglas.
To the right of that you can see the monument to Martin Savage, which is now placed against the wall of the racecourse at the roundabout.

Further right is Kellys (Halfway House) Pub.

Near the Very top right you can (just about!) see the dome of the observatory in Dunsink, and just below it the below it, Dunsinea and Scribblestown.
Peeping through the trees near the centre of the picture is Ashton House.

bottom right is a house who's name I cant remember (I think it may have been belvedere or windemere) which was replaced by apartments a few years ago.

I believe that's the Dunsink dump based on the position of the church in the background. Very interesting. Still no luck in finding photos of the one along Tolka Valley - the aerial shot you've posted seems to be just on the verge and is around the time it would have closed.

I found another shot of the Tolka River from 1986 along the Ballyboggan Road. Doesn't really help, but it's an interesting shot nonetheless, especially the old Cardiff's Bridge.

These are 73/74 and written media reports say it was closed late 70's. I wonder how accurate these dates are, both on the photos and the media reporting.

Its used a lot when we are not in lockdowns.
Mostly AA meetings - sometimes I can hear Band practice when I walk by.
Was used recently for weightwatchers and some some Gospel choir meetings.

Ah right. It hasn't changed much in recent years so? It's been like that for a good 20 years or so as I know people who used it for some of those purposes back then.

It appears to be exclusively used by AA and the rest of the time it’s locked up.
It’s a great pity, because with a little imagination it could become a thriving Community Cafe and Garden with the additional green space to the rear been used.

Fascinating photo showing the beginning of the transformation of Blanch from a rural village into a new Western suburb of Dublin.

Roselawn is under construction as are Coolmine and Glenville estates.

Castkeknock back in 1971 was still a rural village with some small-scale development in the vicinity of the village.

The first large new estates to be developed - Deerpark, Park View and the Georgian Village - are under construction on the RHS of the image.

Road system for Corduff estate is being excavated out to the north of the village and the newly-built Coolmine Community College is the grey square structure on the LHS of the image.

Springlawn estate off Clonsilla Road is under construction.

Apologies for the less than perfect image: it was scanned from a glossy A2 sheet and the “shine” has affected the picture.

Declassified US KH-7 reconnaissance satellite photo of Blanchardstown and Castleknock, February 1966

James Connolly Memorial Hospital is at upper centre of the image.

Both villages were still very rural when this astonishingly detailed spy satellite photo was taken almost 60 years ago, but you can see that new housing development is also just beginning in Blanchardstown. The Phoenix Park is just visible at lower right.

If you zoom in, you can see a couple of newly-built houses at the far LHS further up Clonsilla Road from Blanch - I suspect that this was the start of Broadway estate.

I myself grew up in Castleknock when it was a newly developed suburb.

I could be wrong but that cool satellite photo doesn't show as far Broadway on clonsilla rd but the farmhouse that used to be opposite the roselawn junction. Was always hidden behind trees.

I note also laurel lodge house or farm is still here. I don't remember this. But when they built laurel lodge this had been demolished but the phone and phone line were still connected and nailed to a tree. Builders used to make calls on this when building the estate. I remember that.

Bottom right is Farmleigh and the Park.
