Why build a NEW Cemetery here ?

A new city cemetery took a step forward this week as the Council submitted a planning application to develop one on a four-acre site off the Dublin Road in Renmore.

Officials putting forward the proposal for a site adjacent to the Connacht Hotel have sought to avoid this – and suggest the new cemetery will provide enough space to facilitate burials for 13 years.

Seems a bit short term for me? Why not try a bigger site further East

What's wrong with Merlin Park? Plenty of space in nice surroundings, with available parking and on a bus route.

which includes the fact that (presumably of the options inside the city): this site "was the only land zoned for amenity use where trial holes did not hit rock"

Like it or not, the Wellpark residents have amentiy-zoned land in their views. I can think of far worse things to look out on than cemeteries - and if it's good enough for the residents of Rahoon and Bohermore, it's good enough for Mervue and Wellpark ones!

The dead residents of Rahoon and Bohermore predate the living ones and there's already a cemetery in Old Mervue that also predates the estate and so in all cases you knew what you were getting before you moved in.

I'm pretty sure that cemetery was low on the list of possibilities when the locals realised that plot was zoned amenity.

I might sound insensitive. I think this land being used for a Cemetery is crazy. This is a premium plot of land and for it to be used to house dead people is not the best use of this resource.

Clueless stuff from our dysfunctional city council. That road has enough traffic problems as it is. How they let that ugly Garda station get built so close to the road and roundabout is beyond me. Zero future thinking as always.

City is grinding to a halt and FDI is opting to choose Limerick over Galway because of traffic and housing problems.

Extend the Wellpark estate for housing, seeing as it already has road access via the existing estate and public transport links.

Apartment blocks. The Londis down the road and the Connaught hotel already go in the sky, let this one go up 4 or 5 levels. Maybe even go mad and put in an underground car park and retail on the ground floor. Actually doesn't the Londis gave underground car parking already too?

On the suggestion the land be used for handing instead- the sewage system on the east side of the city can't support any more housing apparently- "there is no capacity in the waste water collection system east of the River Corrib, meaning that any new housing or commercial developments will likely discharge into the sea through stormwater overflow valves".

Was always a mistake to built Mutton Island treatment plant. This short-termism solution was known at the time. No ability of the plant to expand in a sustainable manner. It should have been built East of the City with future expansion of the City in mind. Was the fastest growing City in the 90's when reading the local papers back in the day. Agree it is a poorly run and managed City. Need drastic Local Government reform in Ireland though for that to make that happen.

I totally agree. I'm a transplanted Dub, who loves Galway. But local government is a disaster not just useless councillors but the obviously incompetent council staff.

This summer we went to Donegal for a holiday. Almost every town had a bypass.

It's actually pathetic that we put up with this.

Social housing so no individuals need insurance 😀

But it's up the hill from the top of Doughiska Road, so probably the safest place in the city from flooding.
