Should be years driving in this
Relax man, typical Passat driver😉. I wasn't moaning about anything, I'm sure I'm not the only one who found the posts difficult to read.
Dent the rear quarter panel, crack a tail light, one headlight bulb missing and have 3 or 4 feral children loose in it at any one time and it’ll be like 90% of this model Avensis on the road. Those that I’m seeing anyway.
And what do you think of the car as a bangernomics possibility
4 wheels and an NCT, that’s about all we ask of this thread 😀
You couldn't get better really, that era especially, they don't give too much hassle
🤔

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t tempted 😂
I love how the Speedo goes to 140mph🤣
Brilliant - that made me lol 🤣
Used to be able to drive a Reliant with a motorcycle license!
No idea what you mean. I use Boards on a laptop and sometimes my posts get
all jumbled around with because of the adverts popping in and out from the sides.
Use brave browser it's fantastic at blocking out the Ads. I use boards primarily on my phone via brave browser and I don't see any Ads, they'd wreck you head.
I'm limited to what I can use on my work laptop so can only use internet explorer.
The ads don't bother me at all, I barely notice them.
Still on the lookout for a bangernomics car to buy, what do ye think of this one:
2008 Nissan Primera For Sale in Ballina, Mayo from garydallas (adverts.ie)
Seems like a great deal if its legit? But be careful though its Adverts.ie and some people have already posted replies and they seem to be suspicious.
Similar car (also in Mayo, coincidence?? ) on DD.

Adverts gives you the option of posting the ad on DD as well for a price.
I never choose the option as I don't want to deal with DD buyers nor sellers.
The only issue is that the account is a new Reg.

Slightly wary of the "small bit of work"
Great car (once the statements are true). I flagged to the seller that he was being hit by scammers as there's a spate of them on Adverts.
I have a P12 Primera as a backup car. 18 years old. Bought it for €700 during lockdown, with fsh, new tyres (upmarket ditchfinders if that makes sense and 4 of them), 70k miles and 2 owners from same family. They are a very sweet car. The 1.6 is a grand engine, nothing spectacular but very reliable compared to the 1.8 or indeed the DCi in those years. Man, if I could have had one of these when new. There are always better cars but as a bangernomic, for kit like a decent reversing camera which is still better than that of many much newer cars (p.s. use an fm transmitter to use your phone with the built-in radio) and for taxability and usability, these are great. I bought the seller, not the car; as it was during the pandemic and everything checked out for me and they needed a sale but no one could travel.
Input mine through 2 NCTs with no servicing and it passed first time each time. For the 3rd one, I had it serviced and had to retest for the lights which I buffed with baking soda and toothpaste and finished with wd40 :D ).
I don't see the tax as high. Some might. My main car is old too and is €994. Which I take on the chin as an investment in Honda unbreakability.
That appears to be a good one. I would check the usual though. Steering, suspension knocks, engine when warm after a spin. Was it ragged, is it overheating.
As bangernomics go, I think in 1.6 they are an excellent punt with little to go wrong. But happy to be corrected by mechanical minds.
Yes, cool story bro
On the face of it, seems fine. Honest seller and all that. But looking at both current ads, both low owner high mileage (240k miles) cars sought after for their high mileage capability and longevity. With 45 cars sold since 2022, I'd be be keen to visit and nose out the source of both cars. Is this the seller's thing or are these 2 being so similar just a coincidence?
The Yeti is a little belter if everything checks out. A keeper.
Should phrase that better. The buyers are suspicious, the seller is not.
Meeting anybody in a dark car park, bringing cash. Ok. Nothing can go wrong here
What are you on about? The house is outside a country bungalow and yes you would pay cash for a €1000 asking price. Or would you be thinking Bitcoin or using solicitors on both sides?
Less of the hysteria.
I'm definitely in the market for a bangernomic now. My 2006 civic has rusted sills, and I'm actually pretty surprised how bad the rust is considering it passed the NCT with no corrosion issues last year. Maybe that tester didn't give a shite but my mechanic put it up on the lift yesterday and the car was literally crumbling away in his hands. Mechanic says it's not worth fixing.
Anyway, I haven't looked at used cars in 6 years and the prices seem bonkers. I'm looking for something automatic ideally, petrol as I'm only doing small milage, and smallish to medium size car if possible.
Folks, what's the best website for getting a car checked before buying? cartell.ie or the donedeal one or are they all much of a muchness?
Cartell or Motorcheck. I’d avoid Donedeal one personally
I use Motorcheck as well however did use the Donedeal one last year and it did highlight a car I was going to view was a UK CAT C write off
Getting harder and harder to find this thread 😔
'06 S-Max 2.0 Diesel
121,880 miles
NCT October '25
Asking €2,100
Irish car from new and same owner since 2008
I like this advert, its obviously a genuine seller and a very honest car. The mileage is very reasonable and its a straight motor. Genuine 7 seaters are getting harder and harder to find. Most of them are pulled asunder and/or have galactic miles.
More often than not families are opting to buy brand new SUV's which are not a patch on proper the 7 seaters that are no longer manufactured (SMax, Galaxy, Alhambra, Sharon all no longer in production)
This example has higher tax (710), so thats not ideal. I think it could be a gem of a car assuming rot is not an issue. The 2.0 is a great engine and this car would happily haul kids, bikes, dogs etc over short or long distances in relative comfort with ease
I'd buy it if I was in the market over blowing €20k on a 2018 version!!

121,000 Miles, nothing on a diesel once properly maintained.
I revently found a Hyundai i30 2015 Diesel with 100,000 kms mint condition for just under 10K for my Sister and I wish I had spotted it for myself before I spend 19,500 on the Kia Cee'd I got, I spend too much on cars giving literally several thousand to the Government for free in tax I'm not willing to do again so I won't buy new again. Now I view a car as just a means to get from A to B and from now on going to do it as cheap as I can and keep the money in the bank.
The money people are willing to spend on cars on PCP now is just insanity and all SUV and it's funny, the other day I was sitting behind a VW SUV, can't remember the model now and it was really obvious that the car had just a massive body kit on it, probably bit bigger boot than a Hatch and sits taller with larger wheels and probably no more interior room at all and the People are willing to shell out 40-50 K on a new SUV it's so funny actually.
The car is still very much a status symbol in Ireland and since the dawn of cheap PCP contracts it's much more obvious. Most cars now are probably bought on PCP a cycle that repeats every year to avoid the balloon eventually after probably 2 or 3 PCP contracts and a substantial amount of money later one has to finally accept that balloon isn't going away and they can pay off the balloon or give the car back under the half rule.
