Getting rid of Sky.........What are the alternatives.

Looking for advice please, long time Sky customer….20 years plus and am now at the point that I cannot afford their prices. I have most channels they offer, sports, movies etc. I have two sky boxes, one a throwback to when the kids were here. I run a "magic eye" from each to feed a kitchen and bedroom tv. I like to record/series link programmes. I would be gutted to lose the sports but not bothered about the movie channels. Is there a box that will look after the recording bit and that I can simply connect the existing cables from the dish to or am I trying to simplify things too much?

Maybe you could run a box through the internet instead of the dish.

I hope so anyway, we got fibre optic connected today so am going to have to research the options but deffo getting rid of Sky, Prime and Netflix subscriptions.

Any Freesat branded box will allow you to watch and record and series link the UK free to air stuff.

Non branded boxes YMMV ,

Enigma / Linux boxes are a bit more work but you can add Irish channels on the same device. And you can stream to some TVs / set top boxes for multi room.

Now TV is is as little as €3 per month for entertainment. But sports costs more because they know you'll pay. Check the NowTV thread on

I taught i seen a thread about the annual sky cancellation but cant see it now so i said id put this here.

My father in law has had sky i think since before sky plus and he loves and wont hear about streaming. In later years i have done the annual haggling with sky on price every year and cancelled only for sky to ring back with a resonable offer.

So we are here again and his contract is up in a week and I am just sick of dealing with them and playing the game of cancelling and them coming back with an offer.( offers to stay on are very bad this year)

The price this time is gone up a fair wack from last year and compare to new customers he is getting a very bad deal.

Is there anyway to get around the many phonecalls to get him a good price or is this sky actually just trying to get him off the dish on to streaming this time?

if you are paying for premium channels like sky sports and movies then you are stuck, ring and say its too much and if you are offered a bad deal just walk away and cancel, they'll be back

i quit sky a month ago after six years , resurrected a tiviar sat combi box i bought a few years ago , all UK and Ire free to air channels and a 1TB HD for recording .

Just sorry id didn't do it sooner .

Free to air satellite channels are disappearing. The move is towards streaming.

If you still want to watch one aspect of sky for example the entertainment or sports section use the Now TV app. You'll get a deal usually for signing up and can cancel any month. Pretty cheap alternative.

I brought a Sony TV with a digital turner and cancelled my Sky a couple of years ago best decision I ever made. I plugged my Sky cables into my TV. I have all the BBCs, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5. Dave and over 200+ more channels. The only thing that took a little time was putting the channels in numerical order but this was only a once off.

Just incase you don’t know any sky customers who use a non-HD box will have their subscriptions cancelled in October.

Not gone , just moved. Sky are shuffling everything around , moving from DVB-S to DVB-S2 so a lot of moves have happened recently.

If you have a linux box with ABM set up to run daily , you wont have noticed them missing as they would have been rescanned automatically.

Any other box ( assuming its not a 20 year old SD box ) you have to manually search for them.

You don't say the make of tv and how modern it is, it may even have a sat tuner and a saorview tuner. When I try to help people get a good deal they then come back and say, oh i like to pause and rewind, or i like subtitles, i want 7 day epg, i want sorview and sat channels on same epg,or i do record the odd prog and some say i like the layout. If you can narrow it dwon to I just want to watch tv then these are the best options.

by the way there is a post at 10 above that is a blatant lie, here are 2 pics of more 4 and 4seven taken 2 mins ago on sat. why anyone would make such a posting is beyond me. They may have changed frequency but they are not gone. There are about 825 channels on 28east and its going to take a good few years before these are all on iptv platforms.

The offers from Now Tv can be amazing. I am currently on an offer for 6 mths @ 1 (ONE) Eur per month.

Couple weeks ago they also offered Sky Sports for 12 mths @ 15 Euro per month.

Now TV is not on satellite. The OP has taken no further part in the discussion, but they did say they can no longer afford Sky TV satellite prices.

Every Internet TV offering like Now, will be an expense on top of their broadband subscription, if they have broadband. There are good Free to Air satellite solutions on the thread, and people who leave Sky for FTA oftentimes say they are happy with that.

OK, can we stop with the backseat moderation in this thread please. The OP asked for alternatives to Sky and said “I would be gutted to lose the sports”. In such circumstances I’m not sure why people are getting upset and launching attacks on posters who are suggesting alternatives that allow him to keep the sports, which free to air satellite on its own won’t do.

For the avoidance of doubt, I’ve no issue with any alternatives that don’t involve piracy or circumventing regional restrictions being discussed in this thread.

My problem is the father in law does not want now tv or freesat etc. He loves the sky set up so i think he will have to pay the extra cost as they do not want to play ball this time in reducing cost. The only way i can see it is they want him on sky stream as they keep offering it when i talk to them.

When you call Sky do you ask to be put through to the "loyalty" team? They are the people with the authority to offer discounts.

Recently, our bill was due to increase from €59 to €72 pm because discounts on our Sky Signature, Multiroom & HD package were expiring. Following discussion with the loyalty team we agreed a price of €56.40 pm with the addition of the Cinema channels which we didn't have on the old contract.

Yes the loyalty team deal with all package issues. I was on to them yesterday and got €30 cut off my subscription (Including Sports). I've never paid the full cost since I signed up.

I'm using an older SD digibox (no viewing card) for the fta channels and they're nearly all gone now. If iI get a sky hd box will that work as before without a viewing card?

A HD box won't default to the same channel list as an SD box if it has previously been an Irish sub box. There are two other options, get a UK box, or an ex UK sub card, cards were available on the likes of Adverts in the past. Silly question, by any chance does your existing tv have a satellite connection.

Yeah, actually got a Ferguson 255 combi box before for another room, thought I might get away with a sky hd box from adverts for the spare room. What are those ones for sale on adverts used for anyway?

Resale boxes generally used as replacement for faulty one, sd upgrades or as free to air receivers. Though as I said fta isn't as straightforward as with an sd box, ex sub cards don't appear to be as plentiful as they were, Sky Q put an end to that I think. As has been suggested a Freesat box is probably the best way to go, no messing with cards etc.
