Following on from main thread in Current Affairs about Tubs in general (now closed and mod suggestion that Entertainment category is more suitable).
Indeed, entertainment in certain respects is what Tubs has provided, albeit perhaps in a way not intended. And still awaiting 150k payback to the licence fee holder.
And of course, his new career in Virgin Radio which is imminent.

I have been advised on another fourm that Jermaine Jenas has not been sacked by the BBC, nor was Jim Jennings from RTÉ, and in fairness to both they are not here to defend themselves so I think you should be very careful of what you say, I mean its not like either have access to the Media or their own representation!

You would think he's tailor made for that kind of early evening, inoffensive magazine programme but if they somehow made the mammoth mistake of sticking him on it, I'd give him a week tops before he'd get the boot!
I can just hear all the middle class mums and grans across Britain absolutely perplexed by this babbling, guffawing eegit banging on about Ireland, Barry's tea and his friendship with assorted dead Irish celebrities… 😂
I don't 'hate listen' to Tubridy, I just hate him any time I hear of him or see his name.

Tubridy's move to a music formatted radio station required a level of reinvention of presentation on his part, and then to use that reinvention to integrate into that radio station's format in terms of the duration of presenter links, style and delivery. Because he has simply failed or refused to do this, the overall sound of his slot is disjointed and the music which is VRUK's product sounds like it is always in the way or inhibiting his style of 'broadcasting'. Therefore he treats the music as something to get over and done with, and then normally what he does talk about or the subject of the links, is not really relevant to his type of presentation and could be presented by any competent jock. He is itching to talk about politics or his view of it, something that he would be able to do freely at RTE but at VRUK the radio station is really supposed to be primarily focused at playing adult hit music to a target audience. With such radio stations subjects such as politics for example are normally left at the door. As I have said before he should have practiced and prepared to change his presentation style and as Jmcc has pointed out, maybe even taking some training at RCS.
The general consensus is that he is not a good presenter. A lot of younger presenters go through some kind of training and there is a often difference in quality between them and Tubridy. When he was with RTE, he could get away with that kind of performance because the management had invested so much in promoting him. Virgin Radio and Q102 don't seem to have the budgets for that.

Oh definitely a larger production team in RTE. But what I am referring to really is not related to that. It's how difficult he is to actually listen to, the running together of words, his diction in general, the way he babbles the number that people are supposed to be able to use to contact the programme and so on.

Exactly. I mean it's a scandalous amount of money by any standards. And the fact that he is not even a good presenter just adds insult to injury, imo. I gave up early on with the LLS when he took over. I never listened to the radio show, but the occasional clip I have heard, inadvertently, on Q102 has me wondering, was he always that bad!
Probably won't be able to do that kind of thing on Virgin Radio. It isn't RTE.
I am amazed that it was Tubs . Paying for stuff is not what he likes to do. His normal modus operandi is to muse on his show how he's "always wanted a good quality cane for his perambulations around town", etc.
This is repeated over a series of days, dependent on how long it takes some schmuck to ring in and offer him a free cane for a bit of publicity.
I remember him shamelessly touting for (and getting) a helicopter trip around Manhattan on his old show on RTE a few years back

Exactly. Tubridy's RTE career and the Leinster House bikeshed fiasco are one in the same phenomenon. Public sector extravagance, pisspoor performance, zero accountability and a culture of waste, waste, waste.

RE: Pat Stacey in the Indo, bang on. The Late Late Show will probably never be essential viewing as it was in years gone by, which is the same for almost all TV nowadays, but at least under Kielty there is an energy to it and when they do manage to land an interesting guest from time to time, you can be sure the interview will be worth watching. The contrast with the Tubs era is night and day. If Ireland had regional tv stations which covered parish pump issues with a good dose of cancer chat and death notices, the Tubridy Late Late wouldn't have been out of place on one of those. Somehow, it was broadcast to the nation on a weekly basis from Dublin.

Tubs' London diary always reads like a first year media studies student's attempt at mimicking a Carrie Bradshaw diary entry from Sex in the City. It's all terribly glitzy and glamourous, he's always rushing to the next film premiere, book launch or red carpet and he's always rubbing shoulders with big names who even Bridie in Ballydehob has heard of.
It's all so hollow and insincere. Ryan, write a diary about how you dream about the phone call from Kevin, offering you a nice little radio number for double your current salary. Being real is what the reader wants!
There's always the human element to consider. It might make a good Robert Harris novel if it wasn't like a real-life version of Alan Partridge. He certainly was overpaid and undertalented.

Hard not to feel sorry for him.
I will never feel sorry for him. He had it far too good, for far too long. Despite lacking any discernible talent or ability, he was sitting pretty, doing a very mediocre job, while on a ridiculous salary, which the powers that be apparently felt he was worth. Because if they didn't pay them that, he would be poached by er, nobody. And despite all of that, he was still greedy for more money. He brought this on himself (assisted by NK) and tbh, I think he is lucky to even have a job now.
Speaking of I happened upon a repeat of the Two Johnnies late night lock in show and the quiz was "which RTE celebrity bought a cane in this shop?". Of course it was our wondering star Tubs but it really show how much he really was a plinth filler.
He seems like a fish out of water in London. In Dublin he might be considered a celebrity for his career with RTE but London and the UK has its own celebrities. Don't think that the UK edition of the Mail on Sunday carries his column so apart from the stint on Virgin Radio, he's unknown. Even that social diarist niche is highly competitive there.

No matter how hard Tubridy tries to be intellectual, he just can't escape the Hello magazine style to which he is now consigned after RTE dumped him. Samuel Pepys he ain't. Hard not to feel sorry for him.
