I guess the show needs it's own thread. The plan is that Oliver Callen, Brendan Courtney and couple of other tba hosts will do it will into the winter. It very much looks like the vacancy is left open for Tubs to return.
Graham Norton 4th September followed the exact same format - straight into the interview.
An hour long interview is an hour long interview, my friend .
Up to recently it was 0900-0908 News..0908-0920ish a riff of what is going on..0920ish till finish interview.
Even you can’t twist those facts to suit your narrative.
Why the change of tack for the show…. That’s the issue here.
The predictable energy on hating without even hearing it, aside, it was a fascinating and honest interview about the birth and public reception of Doyle's many novels, films, plays and television, could easily have listened for another hour. I think his 'ego' is very well balanced, able to criticise and laugh at himself as well as accepting what he has achieved.
"I hate Doyle’s writing and his romanticism towards the average jackeen"
Like Charlo Spencer?
Did Doyle suggest that his novels were more Flann O’Brien or Albert Camus than Dan Brown or James Patterson?
Has always been the way with his hour long interviews. They had a fair old swipe (justified) at Helen McEntee in particular, this morning and politicians who were quick to label Doyle's community as 'scum'
I really enjoy Callan's interview style.
Has anyone noticed that Callan now goes straight into interviews his usual 20 minute ‘riff’ has disappeared?
This has been the case for the last few weeks ……..a cynic might form the opinion that he overstepped the mark there for a supposedly balanced PSB ?
Uhmmmmm………………
Roddy Doyle is always value for money as an interviewee. But Callan is again showing his growing skills as an interviewer. Great interview.
Bit ‘high on his heels’ for this poster too.
Great company to work for when you think about it, not many like that around.
No problems with that here tbh. It is the vacuous nature of his presentation style, he prattles on like Tubs did and I fade out. Reacting the same way as I did for last couple of years of Tubs tenure…spinning the dial.
I'd listen to Callan if I was in the car or at home after MI, but to be honest I switch off when Brendan is standing in.
Without meaning to be homophobic, the show tends to be a little 'too gay' when he is hosting, in terms of the subject matter and his monologue.
Everyone is entitled to holidays :)
In the past RTÉ radio presenters would be off between June and August, this changed with their holidays now spread across all 12 months, I think I counted at least a 40 to 50 day holiday period for RTÉ's top presenters.
Courtney is a hard listen tbh. Dial turned, back for Claire Bryne.
According to the abominable doc phibes, he's doing great in his dreams. But it's slightly different in reality!
I’ve always found Turbidy boring. How’s he doing in the UK.
But you do hate listen doc. You've moaned and cried about Callan for a couple of years now.
It's beautifully delicious he's doing better than your mate
Hasn’t been heard on sports in the last two years I think.
it took them 5 years to figure out their top paid presenter was getting under 200k listeners on 2FM, I am not sure they even thought about John
he’s part of their sports team at the weekend on Radio 1
Is John still on the payroll? Haven’t heard him a while. Couple of weeks on Nationwide in the spring.
It took RTE five years to realise John Murray, while a good broadcaster, was a square peg in a round hole in that slot.
Callan will put his foot in it sometime in the future, I'd be pretty confident of that.
Thanks Stato.
It's likely a drop due to work. I wouldn't have though that anyone suggested he was a major turn off, I never got this impression.
Tubs didn't drive the audience on 2FM and I think Radio 1 just shows that many are just not changing the dial, not all but many. John Murray had similar audiences on Radio 1 when he was in that slot while Tubs audience on 2FM dived.
The argument used to be that Tubridy was a major turn off for listenters because of the drop off at 9 am. The last report shows Morning Ireland at 469,000 and Callan at 331,000. If Tubridy's numbers went up the argument was that most of the population leave their radios on RTE Radio One all day.
I don't get the full report that the professionals see. I believe it measures every 15 minutes. The numbers at 7 am and 8.45 could be a lot lower than 469,000. And 331,000 could be a high point at 9 am or at 9.45.
The reports do show that listeners are discerning in their choices. Especially marked by News at One 306,000, Liveline 301,000, Ray D'Arcy 186,000. Joe Duffy is the most beloved on the Radio Forum, even though his Real Life numbers are below Callan's.
Many years ago when I was doing a Master Degree I got to talking to Someone from The Panel. They said at the time when boards was talking about the show from a good point of view that the audience numbers were great, and then it turn but the numbers remained high. Then they stopped talking and the numbers began dropping.
I think this slot radio is slightly different and also I think back then there were more people using boards. I don't think the currently presenter has anything to really worry about unless the audience begin to switch off or over. Which I think according to the JNLRs its is unlikely.
Don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing for the man from Monaghan.
I'd imagine Callan couldn't care less.
Thanks Stato…
A certain poster. Singular. He’s still around now but just sticks to the Tubridy thread. That’s after being sitebanned, twice.
With Tubridy gone from RTE for over a year?, this thread has only produced 576 posts. It got a bit busy in July and August, with 105 posts in August. The Tubridy thread has over 5,000 posts and 192 in August. When he was doing the RTE 9 o'clock slot, it wasn't unusual to see certain posters racking up dozens of posts in a single day.
He has been replaced by lightweights who hold very little fascination for the Radio Forum. Luckily we still have Joe Duffy.
