pray tell, I know their sister is mentioned in the lyrics, what's the story
It was written about his sister who died in a dance hall, she had a weak heart. Was on holiday back home at the time, she lived in Canada. I believe she gave him his first instrument as a birthday gift.
Not just the weekend schedule but the same applies to the weekday programming.
The automation software appears to run separate to the live / voice tracked shows.
No one appears to check the automated playout ,high repetition and at the same time bizarre randomness are the result. If Gold was a commercial station this would not be the case.
Re Toto -Africa , this was on high rotation in the '80s as was Rosanna which doesn't get played as often these days.
Kinks - Come Dancing was a huge airplay hit in the '80s so completely appropriate to Gold (though prefer Waterloo Sunset myself)
FordFiesta - CDs were a godsend when compared to vinyl and carts !! , the 90s was still very focused on 'hot hits ' or 'Gold' ,both formats excluding 80s at the time.

Top Of The Flops. On this weeks Golden Years... One hour of music that never reached the Irish or UK top 40. Sunday at 5pm, @RTEGold
What songs do you think would fit that bill?
Brown Eyed Girl never charted in the U.K. did it? Not sure about Ireland?
pulling mussels from the shell by squeeze only got to 44 in UK. Must have got good airplay in Ireland cos I remember it well (1980). No record of it on Larry Gogan’s Irish charts website. I think the top of the pops and weekly music press strike of that summer may have affected things.
There are literally hundreds and hundreds of songs that are regularly played to death on Irish and UK radio that never made the UK Top 40 / Irish Top 30, or indeed did not chart at all (outside of the BBC R1 or 2FM countdowns).
The one that always comes to mind is Bryan Adams Summer of 69 that made only #42 in the UK, but made #18 in Ireland in 1985
The 80s super pirates played a lot of US stuff that never did much in the UK. Key Largo by Bertie Higgins. The Flame by Cheap Trick comes to mind too
I wonder what are the chances of ronan collins doing the odd live show on Gold ? wonder is it in his contract that his shows must be voicetracked ?
Johnny Cash - Man In Black coming round very frequently. Last night after6pm and again just now just after 11am
Rick's 1 to 4pm show came to abrupt end after a song today at 3.30 pm, 30 mins earlier and the back up music kicked in.
Carol moran came on at 4pm as normal. Wonder what happened there?
I also thought that it would have made a lot more sense if he had been given a once a week 2 hour live show with listener interaction, Requests, Birthdays etc on a Saturday or Sunday lunchtime rather than 15 hours a week or soulless voicetracking
it’s going to be the same 50 people texting in every day like they do on Rising Time. No thanks!
At the weekend? Are you crazy?
There's showband gigs to be done and golf to be played on Saturday and Sunday.
Radio shows have always attracted "regulars" alright
I was listening to Rick a few days ago and Ian Dury and the blockkeads "Reasons to be cheerful" appeared again.
Now it is a great tune, though the novelty of the song wore off soon after Ian died around 25 year ago when it became popular again.
Another one I heard in the same show was Elbow "One day like this" - again overplayed and one that could take a break once in a while.
Very fond of that driving down the M62 song as well…..
John Kenny in for Rick on afternoons for a couple of week. Straight from the paralympics.
I wonder will it be recorded, usually is when JK sits in.
As I posted above Rick's show ended abruptly yesterday, i wonder will he be on today?
can’t really pre record an all request Friday!
all request friday has been recorded / voicetracked in the past, without the requests !!
no request Friday. Just like Ireland’s Biggest Jukebox exists in name only!
And why do they keep playing a promo with the wrong start time for Ireland’s Biggest Jukebox- does nobody at RTE listen to their station?
Must be one of the hardest working presenters on RTE the last few years
aware he covers a wide variety of sports in a commentary, reporting, bulletins capacity, sometimes presents 2FM Game On, has a weekly show on 2XM and fills in on radio 1 and Gold music shows occasionally
but why do you say that?
I think you answered your own question there! Last summer (2023) I recall him doing the sports bulletins on R1, at a LOI game that evening for reports, and filling in on Late Date the same weekend, as well as live GAA commentary on Saturday/Sunday sport. Had the classic rock hour on the go as well.
Seems to be able to slot in anywhere for cover if needed - on the music shows, I'm not expecting him on Morning Ireland any time soon.
you are referring to a specific weekend there - but apart from that JK gets through his work as assigned like others in the sports team in RTE. Though yeah, he seems to have a more flexible attitude and diversity than most in there.
I do remember him election reporting from a count centre in Kildare a few years ago !!
Welcome back JK to RTE Gold - is he live I wonder ??
Paralympics closing ceremony in Paris last night so presumably voice tracked. 1979 by Smashing Pumpkins, good start.
our old friend the emergency tape presenting today from 1pm
Interview with Ronan Collins in todays Independent, seems he records his links for the 5 weekday shows in one day in RTE.
I had thought he had done this from home. I guess it was proving a bit messy ??
