Sure.
But if that company which is so invested in recycling and recovery really recycling them they would be proudly declaring it everywhere.
Since they point blank refuse to disclose where plastic waste ends up Occam's razor suggests that the best and fastest way to get rid of it is in a Poolberg.
There was some talk about North so I gave it a go. My Sunday was pretty hectic but all 7 shops we visited were within a few kilometers.
There is not much of a difference in prices apart from petrol, alcohol and painkillers bit cheaper than here. I noticed that I was not the only one, half the cars on car park were irish reg.
I managed to find my favourite Pink Soda in 1l bottles which is nowhere to find last few months and curiously enough not only that it was cheaper it also came in bottles with return logo so I guess I saved exchange rate conversion by getting 25c extra when I return bottles.
I got few pretty sweet deals as I loaded car full with 500ml sparkling water bottles without deposit charged plus stuff like 72 of 330ml cans of soft drinks for 25£ which is a price one cant find even in expired items shelf. Our waste disposal company will get some free aluminium which return took from them and I do not have to fumble with them at a machine.
Oh and cat got something too, sheeba 40 pouches multipack which is 26-28euro in dunnes was only 15£. I got so many I told my wife that if he gets run over by a car I will kill him again.
Did you notice the Not for EU labels?
No I did not because there are none.
All it says is Registered for deposit in ROI. Empty pack redeemable for 25c in ROI only.
Upon checking barcode on rescam site it is accepted so happy days for everyone who buys them over there and try to save environment and try to save us from those pesky fines for not complying with targets… 🤑
Home Bargains is the best value NI shop I like to frequent.
😅
I but cat food in Lidl or Aldi just cans not pouches. 12 cans are less than 6 euro if I remember right
I know. I tried those and every other under the sun. It resulted in him not touching it. I said let him be, hunger will teach him but to no avail. Even if he ate some he vomited it out after while. Sheba pouches are the only thing he eats and even those have to be fine flakes variety as other type even though it is the same brand ends up on various places in neat stinky piles. There is no worse feeling like stepping in a pile of cat vomit when you go to WC in the night.
So that particular type is 26-28 euro for 40 pouches multipack in Dunnes or few pet shops and for same reason only 15£ in the North. I know it is expensive and while he is driving me nuts I have no heart to get rid of him.
Our cat eats this stuff:
https://home.bargains/product/1dd02ad2-b24a-4459-a214-7cb44c3ae776/go-cat-adult-chicken-and-duck-dry-cat-food-2kg
He obviously doesnt have a sophisticated palate but suits me at £5 for 2kg 😆
Ive been noticing a lot more drinks with the Re-Turn logo in Home Bargains recently. Fanta has it is very cheap and we would drink a lot of it.
That show you how well thought out plan we implemented. A lot of soft drinks are made in NI and company do not care. They are shooting themselfes in a foot by selling marked stuff up North as people in NI may start collecting them to cash in when they pop in South. It is like free money for them. I suppose that rescam do not care either as it seems a lot of people simply do not claim deposit back which most likely was the plan all along.
On a cat side note, our eats dry food too those whiskas bags which are about 10e here and we got few for 5£ in NI too.
20 minutes plus to return for €3.40. This is the second time in a row now. I thought we were promised this will get better with time, not worse.
It seems that "settling in" doesn't mean the process gets more efficient, it means the machines get broken more regularly, they stink, and people have more and more cans to return which means that even if there's only 2 or 3 people in from of you it can take up to half an hour to get everything done.
One machine of the two in my local Dunnes has been broken for weeks. The other one shuts off every second customer with a simple message saying "This machine is now closed" and nothing else. A proper middle finger to everyone.
Halloween should be interesting. There will be a lot of p!ssed off teens with RVM scores to settle.
ReTurn publishing collected/recycling stats!
Thinking out loud here, if stats were published-say x amount of aluminium cans were collected or recycled, that would give the kerbside waste collections companies valuable information to state their case to the Minister, they are out of pocket and need to increase rate.
Simple maths to compute value of number of cans or weight of cans to calculate their value.
I wonder what happens if you put a firework into an RVM.
Id imagine you feel immense satisfaction. Similar to taking a bat to the office printer that keeps jamming just before meetings.
It would frighten the wasps away.
Well, I have seen (I believe commonly used term is unwell) person taking his score to the machine. Most if not all of the stuff he tried to redeem for cold hard cash most likely came from waste bins. Smell and unidentifiable stuff which was caked all over his valuable cargo and dripping and falling out everywhere was well, unidentifiable but a good repellent.
I was not the only one who turned away. Dunno how often they come for their earnings but I would consider it a tough line of work to be in.
Well, wherever it's ending up, their reticence certainly shows they have something to hide. Otherwise, you can bet your last can of coke they'd be crowing about it.
The other evening the first machine refused all the plastic bottles too heavy regardless of size. It's only one machine. Took the cans. €4..
2nd place queue of 3 first guy had a black bag full to get through. Other machine not working.
3rd place queue of 4 first guy with another massive bag. Only one machine.
Came home chucked all the plastic bottles in the green bin.
I was on the fence about it originally. Lost interest in now. I don't have space to store them, don't want to do the rescam relay trying to get rid of them.
They should have put the effort into reducing packaging.
B&M very decent too
In Derry Home Bargains and B&M are about 100 yards apart. I dip into B&M for a snoop regularly but always seem to come back to Home Bargains for most things. B&M do have a much better selection of painting / DIY products
https://x.com/i/status/1816633916620525937
Ha it's the same in Newry! We head up for pet food in pets at home (lots cheaper) then pop into both B&M (great for random sweets) and home bargains
Wouldn't the bin companies have their own stats backed up by invoices ?
Of course they would but they are hardly likely to release it to the public.
Why not ?
The public which includes their customers who they are using to put pressure on the Minister for compo.
If they are not shy about threatening a price increase to get their way they shouldn't be shy about providing justification.
How upfront is ReTurn with statistics?
What statistics do you want?
There was daily and monthly collection figures given on this thread a while back.
If you search back you might find what you want.
Re-turn aren't threatening to take money out of your bank account like the bin companies are.
I would not throw them in a bin though.
That way you are doing exactly what they planned all along. If you are tired of waiting in a queue or not bothered then just hand bag of them to any beggar or homeless person on the street or leave them in a bag outside place with machines. Someone will take them and will wait.
You are practically handing your money to rescam so if you are decided to forego deposit then hand them over to someone, anyone but not rescam.
How much deposit was collected for starters and where is collected material sent and how it is processed/recycled.
Simple questions.
Quite right not to bin them, they have value.
Handing them to random people based on their appearance isn't such a good idea though.
You have no idea if they will return the containers or litter them
Not all collectors look the same anyway.
I've seen people who don't fit your profiling collecting cans.
Leaving bags on the ground outside shops is an offence under the Litter Act.
You're on the right track as far as Re-turn goes.
In their public statements they keep urging people to return and collect their deposits.
They are in the targets business and their success will be measured by the percentage collected.
