Reseeding question

Hello, I wanted to reseed a field using a direct drill with no ploughing or power harrowing involved as too many stones would be pulled up.

I was wondering what would be the right way to go about this. The field got limed last year. I was thinking, spray off the current crop of silage that’s on it now and then in 2 weeks cut and bale that. Then apply fertiliser and stitch in the grass, it’s clover we’re sowing. I was wondering about the fertiliser part, If I spread slurry before seeding would it affect the drill and if I spread after would it smother the new grass trying to sprout. Never even attempted reseeding before so any advice would be welcome.

A few days as it's only the fenceline not the whole field. You could keep a foot or 2 away from the fence

Spray off and then stitch in about 2 weeks from now.

Or just stitch straight in now if the old grass isn't too bad.

No feeding if its to be stitched

Yeah you starve the old grass unless you kill it. Gives the new grass a chance to establish

whenever the weeds come. Autumn reseed will have much less weeds. You mighten even need to spray at all. I sowed first week of September last year and never sprayed at all and it’s clean as a whistle. Spring is different so you’d be normally going 6 weeks or so depending on the growth.

We usually wait till after first grazing. You'll see what weeds you have plus they will be exposed as the grass will be eaten back

Plan on using DB 10 plus as the seed sown contains high levels of clover, it states on the container that it can't be used on established clover, would it still be OK then if it was grazed?

No, Sorry Reggie but I think you are giving bad advice there I think, Dock roots will have become too established by the time its fit for grazing, when they are the size of a 2euro coin is the time to hit them and kill the roots as well, its the one chance to really wipe them out.

Established clover is about 6 months old.

Pro Clova, clovermax and DB are very weak but have a habit of checking clover if not killing it outright

Well each to thier own but that's the way it's been done here the last decade. If not grazed then grass can cover the seedlings and be missed. Plenty of experience here finding out things the hard way.

Also no such thing was wiping out a field from docks. That's only a pipedream we all have unfortunately.

Anyone any idea how to thicken a field that was reseeded last year I got two good cuts of silage of it this year (17.5 bales to the acre over the two cuts) and just noticed its a bit thin on the ground in spots would putting sheep on it thicken it up?

Stitch in more grass seed would be the job. Grass should have tillered to its max after 12 months

This years reseed is under water the last few days never seen floods like the last few days. But it is doing well hopefully weather picks up soon

sorry Reggie but completely disagree.

The clover safe sprays are very weak and the only way to get the best kill is to spray when the seedling docks are very small. If they get going at all you’re on the back foot. I did a reseed here 3 weeks ago and it’ll be sprayed in the next 10 days before the grass starts to cover the ground and while the docks are still small and weak. Plenty experience reseeding here between me and dad

24 ac reseeded here over the weekend with 12 kgs grass, 4 kg red clover and 1kg white clover. Great conditions for it. Getting rained on as we speak.
sprayed it off 3 weeks ago before a cut of silage, ploughed last weekend, paddled and ring rolled during the week, 3t lime /ac on Wednesday, powerharrowed on Saturday , sowed seed with grass Harrow on Saturday/Sunday, spread 150 kg 0/7/30 per ac and rolled x2 today in that order

We started back ploughing this year for first time in 10 years. Very happy with the take on what’s been ploughed

Most of it is new land that is rough and had been hammered and needed a fresh start. Did a 6 ac paddock at home that was hammered from drawing filling across it out of the yard for the last 6 years

It's what we do here as we are gone away from clover altogether as its a waste of time for us. If there's a high weed burden then yes spraying at a half rate early is a must but if not your better off waiting till its grazed back. Sprays get a better hit at the weeds.

Agree that the new clover safe sprays are a waste of time. That's why we use forefront T and envy now with dockstar with the older reseeds

NNeVer used it but heard its great stuff to kill clover anyways. Not so much the weeds.

Something like €200 a pack and it does 1 or 2 hectares?
