I misinterpreted your statement about the permanent license, as in they no longer have a permanent license. Sorry about that. Given the experience of Phantom/TXFM and the ways that 8Radio's potential audience listen to music these days, I would say the chance of it even looking at the possibility of a permanent license are sadly close to non-existent at this stage. Simon Maher's setup seems to be working okay as it stands with its music related sponsorships. 8Radio.com does look for voluntary donations which hopefully is helping too.
Radio Nova is by no means perfect, particularly with the predictable and somewhat repetitive nature of its daytime playlist, but it certainly beats the chart-oriented music on most music stations (certainly in or around Dublin) during the day. There is definitely room for a bit more imagination in the music selection - for example: expanding the selection of songs played by certain artistes.
Job Has nova on past year or so,while nirvana are on, just the one song.. never heard stp or alice in chains, plush and interstate love song are radio friendly tracks
I saw Alice in Chains with Metallica when I was about 15. They were brilliant.
There is a fundamental misunderstanding here of commercial radio in a small city, combined with a huge amount of ego-stroking by lads who are, for some reason, desperate for their anonymous username to be seen as cool by other anonymous usernames.
Nova is successful because they don't play obscure tracks from semi-obscure bands. That isn't what a mass market station is about.
Always amuses me when people moan that they play the same music all day every day, and in the same breath claim never to listen. One half of that must be an outright lie, I just can't for the life of me understand why you would bother.
A quick search shows that in the past 30 days, they've played:
Mr Blue Sky = 12 times
Handbags and Gladrags = 14 times
Teenage Dirtbag = 15 times
Under The Bridge = 13 times
Little Lion Man = 15 times
The Great Defector = 16 times
Search any of their "regulars" and you find they've been played an average of 12-15 times in a month - it all adds up to monotonous, even if the songs themselves are grand. They have the whole back catalogue of generations of popular music to choose from to ensure widespread appeal, but in the last couple of years, they have increasingly chosen this playlist nonsense. It's tiresome and disappointing.
For the few songs you have listed here, for arguments sake we'll say they are played once every 2 days on Nova.
I would have thought a lot more, like at least once per day for each song, especially mr blue sky.
I'm assuming it is the Stereophonics version as opposed to the Rod Stewart version.
Their 10 most played songs of late can be found here:

Apart from that being weirdly cantankerous (from someone with an anonymous username (?)), it's missing the point. We're not saying nova isn't successful, we're saying we don't think it's all that good.
It's like talking to someone and saying to them that you don't like Taylor swift, and their response being 'well she's the most popular artist in the world so your opinion is meaningless'.
i'm curious as to how long the 'cycle' is where a song is playlisted; e.g. when they cue up teenage dirtbag, is that for 5 days? a week? i.e. what i'm wondering is was it played 15 times in five days (while that also being 15 times in the last month).
Fair enough, but what you're doing is the like posting on a Taylor Swift thread every three days that you don't like her, you're sick of how poppy her music is, all she does is appeal to teenage girls and why can't she play a bit of speed metal every now and again.
it's just a bit odd, that's all
It seems to be every other day more or less.
i think your analogy only goes so far. if i don't like taylor swift, there are plenty of alternatives. nova was sold to us as a rock and hard rock station, and i presume were awarded their licence on that basis (citation required). what alternative do i have to nova if i want to listen to non-classical popular music which isn't 'pop'?
'Credible music station' doesn't make you money though, higher ratings so increased rate cards for advertising does.
Name a song you think would fit a classic rock station but have never heard on Nova.
I'll start with this one...
speaking of which, the modern day radio edit ruins the song.

As soon as i heard the intro, I thought, Murray J, weekend afternoons on Planetrock.
100%. Best thing ever.
That's a terrible song and I'm glad it's not on Nova 🤣
While My show OFF THE RECORD was on Nova on Sunday Nights That tune and lots of others from Stevie Ray got played, Since moving online to the Nova Classic Rock Channel ,Stevie still gets included in my play list,
Regards,
Pat James
The "Friday Night rock show" has been severely dumbed down with the new female presenter.
When did Tony Ainscough leave the show? - he used to play proper rock music you wouldn't hear on Nova's playlist and was the only remaining hope of Nova sticking to their "Rock" format.
Woah, I didn't know about that online channel. Great, thank you!
not working for me unfortunately. the ads play, and then nothing.
A good while ago, a guy called Lar Flynn took over then for a while.
Upgrades in progress
Online station Nova Classic Rock has been there for a number of years. It used to be automated until Pat James' Off the Record was moved from Radio Nova to there in July 2017. Radio Nova have a few other online sister stations- currently Nova 80s and Nova Chill.
Lar Flynn is also a presenter on Dublin City FM and Christmas FM.
nova was sold to us as a rock and hard rock station, and i presume were awarded their licence on that basis
In fairness, I don't think Nova have ever sold themselves as a hard rock station, and their licence is for a 'classic' rock station.
Now, there will be the usual responses of "how is that classic rock, sure I heard Dermot Kennedy the other day" and whatever else, and maybe some of that is fair, but it was never, ever a hard rock station.
My memory of nova is definitely them being a hard rock station originally, or at least aspiring to be one
Thought I heard ya man Ciaran McGuinness from Nova on Sunshine the other night? I know there is a common shareholder but...
In what capacity?
