I doubt anyone is making a "special journey" or "special trip" for 15 cents.
I wonder what makes them special.
I on occasion do make extra journeys to the bottle bank and rvm. Like @elperello I have always brought my cans to the can bank at the local bottle bank.
I store all our class and cans in the same box and when that gets full I spin down to the local tesco (has a bottle bank) and empty it. DRS means that box fills quicker due to plastic bottles etc.
If that doesn't align itself with a shopping trip then so be it. Extra journey it is. The box still needs to be emptied before I can put anything else into it. Round trip 10-15 minutes depending on lights. Job done.
One other benefit of doing it this way is by not doing it as part of your typical shopping trip, you're not doing it at the same time as other people's shopping trips. Less queueing. Like Re-turn want.
Your 15c tax back on the items you are returning.
Which is one item in the post I reacted to.
…our policy makers take on the circular economy greatly differs kate raworths version of the circular economy!
They have to follow the EU.

Apparently folk were dumping rubbish in the outside RVM in Aldi. The shop has posted A4 paper notices stating the illegal dumping will be reported to authorities followed by exclamation marks
The €3 deposit per plastic souvenir style glasses used for drinks sales within the Euro 2024 stadiums seemed to work well, seen some people waiting around at the collectimg them and clearing over €300 worth.
I'm just lucky the civic amenity site is only a couple of hundred metres from the supermarket and I pass it going there.
This means a shopping, bottle bank and RVM combined trip makes sense.
If others want to make a separate trip that's their own business.
After all we buy the car, pay tax/insurance, NCT etc. and put fuel in it. All out of after tax income in most cases.
If someone wants to run down to the RVM, maybe drop in somewhere for a coffee and a chat that's ok.
That is the level of a logic one deal with arguing with green people. They are going to chastise you for making trip recycling plastic but making trip recycling glass is OK.
Hard cases make bad law
That's because there is a load of lazy f@@ker will not take the bottles to the charity bins provided
WTF do you not wait until you are going shopping.
It amazing the way lads manage to find the multiple machines that do not work
A bit skeptical with the figure of €400.00. That's collecting over 2,500 containers.
My local aldi has a machine that has NEVER worked.
The local SuperValu has TWO machines that is often not working.
As someone who doesn't drive, when I go to do my shopping, carrying two carrier bags full of plastic bottles and cans, it means I can't feasibly do my shopping unless I dispose of the bottles and cans because I wouldn't be able to carry my shopping home.
It's an absolute nonsense.
You must be in a very unlucky area. I would advise you never to bet or buy lottery tickets. I have NEVER yet come accrosa machine that did not work and it Lidl, Aldi ans Supervalu I use for ReReturn
I've come across them OOO everywhere except Dunnes, not in small shops - in major supermarkets, sometimes out of action for hours at a time. LIDL and Supervalu especially flaky.
On Monday lunchtime, Supervalu - both machines out of action. Busted when I went into the shop, still busted when I went out.
Wednesday lunchtime, different Supervalu, it has single machine - it worked.
Thursday lunchtime, ALDI - one machine operational, one OOO.
I don't think it's that uncommon to be fair. Maybe it's because of the high footfall that scuppers the machines or indeed, it may be that I am unlucky. The local centra seems to be in order most times I've been there, but I don't do my grocery shopping there.
The OH does a few bets on the football and we gift each other the Christmas Lotto Millionare raffle ticket every year but thanks for the advice.
ReReturn. I like that. Just keep adding "Re" for the number of times someone "finds" an RVM thats bollixed and has to Reattempt a return.
I believe you when you say you've never seen an RVM out of order. Do you believe other posters when they say theyve found them out of order? It sounds like you dont with stuff like "its amazing how lads find out of order RVMs" and "dont do the lotto you must be in an unlucky area".
It's amazing how vocal supporters of the scheme NEVER find an out of order machine, and NEVER have their receipt rejected by the scanner and NEVER get incorrect information from a sales clerk, and NEVER have any issues.
Clearly you were born beneath a rainbow. Care to share the Lotto numbers you picked?
Is it possible that people who have problems with RVMs are more likely to post about their problems than others who don't have issues ?
The machine in my local Supervalu was OOO again a couple of days ago.
That's now three times that I have noticed it not working since this farce of a scam was started. God knows how many times others have seen the "Out of Order" note sellotaped to the machine as well.
It's based on personal experience. With 3 million items being processed every day, it should not be a source of amazement. It would be an ongoing big news story if the problems reported here were representative of the whole population. In my own case I don't consider it worthwhile to report back to the thread every time I use a machine.
But if it helps, there was one time in Tesco where the four machines were shut down due to some electrical fault. And a Dunnes machine had a OOO message displayed. And more than once their repository for rejected containers was full. But some of things sticking out were not PET bottles or aluminium cans.
As someone who is a vocal opponent of aspects of the scheme (I do generally support the concept, just not the implementation) I've rarely had issues with the machines.
Once machine wasnt working when i went in to do my shopping. Left the stuff back in the car. Machine was working again by time I finished shopping. Returned items and kept voucher for the next day.
Other times, has happened a few times, the shutters are pulled down over the machines during the store's opening hours but maybe within an hour of closing.
I see the return site says in scope items include aluminium cans or plastic bottles between 150 ml and 3 litres.
In the local spar today and found a new drink I'd not seen before, strawberry flavoured water by a company called okf.
Sold in a plastic can :)
No deposit, no logo, no bullsh*t scamming. Nice to have a new option for a soft drink when out and about, i hope many other companies follow suit.
Its very nice too, not too strawberry-y. Next time I'll try the watermelon one.
Is this the product ?

That's the one
Looks like a sawn off plastic bottle to me 😊
I do find very little issues with dunnes machines they eat 99% of what I put in even mangled cans. Sometimes I need to insert bottle 5 or 6 times but I always win. However, I will never use lidl machines as they simply refuse to work. I gave up after they took like 2-3 out of 10 and I tried several times. There must be some hex on them.
Still it is extremelly annoying trying to insert bottles and cans multiple times or stepping from one machine to another.
Unscientific observation, based on being in supermarkets for a short time on any shopping trip. The self service checkouts seems to need a lot more assistance to customers than the RVM's. But of course they have more usage, and sometimes long queues.
In the overall scheme of things, nothing that happened to me in a supermarket was ever extremely annoying.
