Don't they have subsidised food etc in the MTU? If they charge reasonable prices on the premises no one would have much incentive to stroll anywhere else unless they need to get their steps up.
I guessed the college would have a canteen alright but apart from students and college staff, I'm not sure people outside MTU would be mad to make it a regular lunch destination.
I wouldn't expect outsiders to be able to use it either. 😛
I can't see people going to the trouble of leaving the town centre just to go to Oak Park for a snack and a coffee, unless they have two hour lunch hours. All the fuel stations seem to be coffee houses and delis these days as well, and the competition is everywhere.
Anyone an just walk in and use it. It's just inside the main building.
They have subsidised food in both north and sound campus, its a bit awkward though if your working in the middle of town
You're missing my point. I'm referring to the lack of a cafe in Oakpark for its large immediate catchment population (all the WFH-ers, parents, teens, retirees etc etc) combined with all the Tech park workers and college users not having a cafe option in the vicinity other than a college canteen or the hotel. I wouldn't expect people in the town centre with dozens of options making the trek out there for a soup, sandwich or scone. Monavalley by contrast has The Shack, Der's in the industrial estate and now this new one in Shanakill).
I see Anthony O'Gara is unable to be involved in this week's festival due to "medical reasons". Why do I sense Dee Forbes like deja vu?
Someone else mentioned this earlier. Where did you hear about it?
It's on the Kerryman's Facebook page. The comments aren't very sympathetic....
Yes I see it now! I fear this could be the end of the ROT. I can't see RTE really funding it much longer, especially with all that is going on with their finances! I know it still draws a big tv audience, but they may not see it as worth the expense. Feile Trali can still go on without it I'm sure!
I was just in the dunnes store cafe on the NCR and someone told two members of staff that a bluebottle was on their chicken strips in the sandwich bar, and both ignored him
I was talking to someone today who said he saw a lot of Munster rugby guys going into Benners hotel. I saw a few more going in with Munster rugby tops when I was driving past after 6pm. Wonder what is is happening?
Munster did a training session in the rugby club on Thursday morning. I think they went into town afterwards.
I'd agree with this. I worked in the tech park for a few years and the majority of people were driving down to kingdom foods for their lunch. There was no sit-down location apart from the meadowlands. Nobody from the tech park goes into the college.
And its very hard to park at Kingdom foods, then you hit all that traffic there. There's definitely an opening for some sort of food outlet and with 2 vacant units next to Terry's, you could put in a nice place. Good coffee and sandwiches and maybe have pizza or something like that?
Apparently there is a new licence application for the Abbey Inn! in this weeks Kerry's Eye
Lovely atmosphere in town today for the day parade. Weather was perfect too.
Fantastic news. That would be the final piece in the jigsaw in that area of town.
I also saw that a planning request for a 24 bedroom aparthotel with ground floor retail has been submitted for the old Caballs/Kerry Book Shop buildings so that end of town continues to be transformed.
Also, a mini industry/business park of 12 units at the Ford dealership at Mileheight has been granted permission. A new entrance junction off the main road will be created to facilitate it.
I see that Michael Healy Rae has bought the "problem" house at the top of oakpark near Forge cross. It's been painted and looks like it might be student accommodation. Hopefully there will be no trouble from the neighbours.
Don't worry he will have the house well insured for fire
He certainly didn't look like he had medical reasons last nite with his appearance and speech....
Yes....was surprised to see him. I believe he recently underwent cardiac surgery so all the more surprising!
Didn't I read he had a heart bypass lately? Doing well you'd be out within the week after that so it's not unreasonable to be able to do a small speech, I suppose had recovery not being going according to schedule they would have needed a plan B.
Called into grill and thrill this evening with the family only to find they have pulled a fast one with pricing when I went to pay.
They have a very small board on the counter which is easily missed saying that instead of increasing prices, eat in orders will incur a 10% service charge. Very unhappy being stung with it when I went to pay especially as it wasn't pointed out at any stage before I ordered .
Very short sighted of them. It's going to mean people ordering less if sitting in and the spontaneous coffee or desert being thought about more. The staff not being tipped and for us, we'll just get takeaway which will again reduce what we spend as we won't be getting drinks with the meal or coffee and desert afterwards.
If it's described as a service charge, it has to be distributed amongst the staff, the same as with tips/gratuites. And they have to have customer signage setting out their policy in this regard.
Sounds like they may be flouting the law...

They are saying it's that or increase prices.
Some more info on this.

I see Christina's cafe in the square are advertising for staff for their new cafe I'm Manor shopping centre!
Would you not tip 10% or 12% anyway?
I get that its being added without you offering but a lot of places seem to do that now. Doesnt cost any more if you were going to tip anyway though.
