That's not how you look at someones chances in Golf.

Golf is very much form game. Lowry would be considered one of the form golfers the last few months. He would have started the event as having more than a slim chance.

This is a horrible fight to watch.

This boxing bout is like two women waving handbags at each other. But one if them is a boxer. Bulgarian is giving Walsh a hammering here

10 Irish boxers qualified, 8 lost their first bout (although two or three of them were very questionable)

Oh but you are your are saying not well known means you shouldn't be held in so high regard which is bull

it’s not about being well known, it’s about level of competition. It is not a popular sport.

There are many questions to ask about the overall performance of the boxers, before any mention of corruption. The bad decisions might have had a negative impact in the camp as there were a number of underwhelming efforts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 201 ✭✭RoscommonHero

Unlike the Polish and French boxers who got dodgy decisions against our boxers, the Bulgarian fighter showed a lot of class and dignity during and after the fight, hope she medals. Even when Michaela hit here from behind she didn't react - class act!\

Hugh Cahill shouldn't be throwing cheap digs at Irish boxers also particularly when his knowledge of boxing has been shown up a few times already this week.

Lot politics on Irish High Performance by all accounts. Questions need be asked.

In fairness 2 girls were robbed especially. Moorhouse looks real talent.

1 bronze from Male team in 3 Olympics is poor though

Hugh chill only ever throws cheap digs. Terrible pundit even in the supposed sports he's meant to know about.

I said nothing about being well known.

I mean in terms of participation, rowing is extremely niche. It's quite a white middle class sport also and there's few rowing clubs.

I'd rank Sonia's achievements above Paul O'Donovan's as it's a much more competitive sport and she dominated the world for over a decade despite only winning one olympic silver medal.

Roy Keane and George Best are probably our greatest sportspeople as they reached the pinnacle of the most competitive sport.

So for the Athletics here are some people i think have a great chance of winning gold. Some of these are strong favourites and some are better odds.

Chase Jackson in the womens shot, Evens money, i don;t think she'll be beaten. Real character she is.

Noah Lyles to win both 100m/200m, he looks to be in serious form, you'd get about 2/1

I'm realy strong on Jakob Ingebritsen beating Josh Kerr for Gold. He really looks like he wants to make amends from last time out. It's basically a straight match up in that race 1500m

If you can find the odds or see any specials, Mondo DuPlantis will break the world record in the Pole Vault

Rashidat is actually really good value at 6/1 to win gold. I think she still has a lot of untapped potential you could see. I wouldn't be hugely shocked if she won Gold. I think she'll medal anyway, so you can get better than even money on that

Shericka Jackson in the 200m women is great value at 2/1. I think she'll get the better of Gabby Thomas as she's been building up to the olympics despite a great year

Angelina Topic is the womens High jump at 16/1 looks great value. She is only young and is continously going higher. I think she'll medal

The womens Pole Vault is wide open. To get some Value i think Angelika Moser has a shot of winning a medal. She could even win gold, but that event will really be on the night.

Genuine question, how is Billy Walsh getting on with the States? I have no idea if he is even still there but it seems to have regressed since he walked

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 918 ✭✭✭Morris Garren

Was it Ted Walsh who called him a 'gobshite' one day during the horseracing? Knowing Ted, it probably was. And he's probably correct.

It sure was. A couple of times he's called him that. I have remarked on him a few occasions on this thread. He thinks he's One of the lads type of fella. Known for making sexist remarks. An unuseful idiot

RTE's number one tossbag. And that's saying something

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 918 ✭✭✭Morris Garren

    Yeah, Cheers for clarifying.

He really sounds like a lad who drinks pints with the 'boyz' and loves talking shyte and knows the corridors in D4. Hence, straight up the RTE ladder.

Bit of a disappointing day all told bar O'Donovan and McCarthy who always deliver when it counts.

    Sailing medal thrown away.

Team showjumping medal was there only for poor anchor round of 9 faults.

    Another boxing first-round defeat.

All three 1500metre runners fail to qualify.

    Golfers way off it.

Just because a sport is not well known to us does not mean it's not competitive. I mean soccer and rugby are well known but there isn't a lot of competitive teams

I get worried when I hear comments from boxers that they thought they were ahead going into last rounds when they weren't. That's just embarrassingly bad coaching at Olympic level. Are guys being kept on because they have been there for years. That's fine but have someone else there to assist with areas in where they may be lacking.

it’s about numbers of competitors, not even popularity. How many young rowers is there in the world compared to footballers, Maybe 1 to 15,000?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,843 ✭✭✭✭martingriff

Is soccer really that competitive for a world cup or European championships there are only a few teams to win less in club soccer. Do not rate George Best very good footballer but wasted his talent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,843 ✭✭✭✭martingriff

You still have to have the drive and talent to compete and win. Diminishing someone achievements by saying ah it's a niche sport is wrong imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,939 ✭✭✭orangerhyme

It's the most popular sport globally by a long shot. So even just playing professionally is a big achievement.

T9 and -6 thru 16…McIlroy is still well in contention and the leader is having a mare at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,939 ✭✭✭orangerhyme

All the talent filters up to just a few leagues and teams.

It's the no 1 sport in pretty much every country in Europe, Africa, Latin America and it's still pretty popular in lots of other countries in Asia, Middle east, North America and Oceania.

Just think about all the people you've encountered in your life. How many have played soccer and how many rowers have you met?

George Best won the Ballon Dor and also the European cup so he reached the pinnacle of his sport.

Roy Keane won numerous PLs and the CL and was captain so he reached the pinnacle.

I don't think it's fair to compare sportspeople from different sports as you can only beat your competition.

For example is John O'Shea a greater sportsperson than Paul O'Donovan?

    You could argue either way.

I'd put Sonia over Paul but others wouldn't.

Rory too erratic to do anything here, he’s just as likely to make a bogey as a birdie at any given hole and that kind if wild play just ain’t going to get the job done I’m afraid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,278 ✭✭✭ledwithhedwith

sorry in what world is not calling someone irelands greatest ever sportsperson diminishing someone’s achievements? His achievements are incredible.

    I'm not diminishing his achievements.

Just saying he shouldn't be considered Ireland's greatest sportsperson as his sport is too niche. Likewise Katie Taylor.

I'd put him in the top 10 though as he did it in 3 Olympics which is a phenomenal achievement. He did this whilst getting two degrees also.
