N60 Upgrades

Since the opening of the M17, the N60 has seen a large increase in traffic as these two roads together has become an attractive route between Mayo and, well, much of the rest of the country.

Mayo County Council has today opened the consultation for N60 Road Improvement at Manulla. It includes approx. 0.85km of online upgrade and 1.50 km of offline construction plus presumably removal of the Level Crossing on the Ballina branch. Consultation here;

3.6km of new road isn't bad in this day and age in fairness. Now if only they'd get the Manulla bypass into ABP. At this rate it'll be 2030 before it's done. Planning started in 2011.

Manulla needs it alright. The crossroads there isn't great. A lot or schemes are progressing very slowly now and not just in Mayo. A number of roads in Galway are delayed too.

I always thought 100 was too high for that section of road.

Couple of pics of the Heathlawn scheme today. It's 99% finished, just some landscaping and line painting being done on the adjacent greenway.

There were several locals out using the greenway already, but I think it will only meet its potential once it is extended into Balla town.

Off topic but I suspect a bypass of Ballinrobe is going to become a major talking point. They turned on a new set of traffic lights last week and have made the town twice as bad. Wait until the schools return…..absolute mayhem.

The chicane at the top of the hill when approaching from the Partry side must be a big factor in delays, especially when lorries are passing through. No amount of traffic lights will solve that.

Someone I know was stuck there for 20 minutes yesterday - apparently no accident or anything so it must have been because of these traffic lights. It'll probably make anyone aware of it more likely to use the N60 than the N84.

Is the Manulla upgrade the last one on the N60 for the foreseeable future? I don't see any open consultations on the Mayo Co.Co. website for that route or for any other roads in the county either.

More or less, yes. Breaffy active travel scheme should get underway shortly and Balla AT will hopefully get through planning in the next year or two. The only other scheme in the works that I know of, is to replace the rail overbridge near Brickens between Claremorris and Ballyhaunis.

I would love to see a proper relief road for Claremorris, from the N60/R320 junction to the N60/N17 junction but no such scheme is planned AFAIK.

I'd like to see that road too but with an inner relief road already in place it's unlikely to be done anytime soon. However I think I mentioned before that driving south through Ballinrobe from Castlebar is becoming increasingly frustrating and If more and more people choose instead to go to Galway via the N60 a bypass around Claremorris may become more urgent.

The Manulla bypass is due to go to ABP in Q2 next year, TII permitting.

Breaffy safety/active travel scheme construction contract to be awarded in Q1, again TII permitting.

Part 8 planning application to be lodged imminently to replace the narrow bridge over the railway at Bekan, between Claremorris and Ballyhaunis.

The last few times I've driven to Castlebar/Westport Sat Nav directs to take this brand new road that seems to be an effective Northern Bypass of Claremorris. It brings you past some schools and comes out on the N60 by the soccer ptich and CBE offices. Very shiny new road with very little on it, looks like a new distributor road.

And idea what the story with it is?

N60 safety works in Breaffy can go to tender.

Manulla bypass is due to go to ABP in Q2 this year, according to the June update from the council. This is just a 2km project, starting at the level crossing. The original 4km version was shot down by TII for being too expensive for a minor works job.
