Be good to have thread for our boxing team
Kicks off at 16:20 Irish time today with Dean Clancy at 63.5 kgs vs a boxer from Jordan
FB page for IABA is good to follow to keep up to date on draw
The Irish boxers are getting their arses handed to them....
Cahill and Donovan after rd 2 still not knowing of rd 1 point deduction..
6 gone from 8…
More that the Pole dragged Aoife down to her (very limited) level. It's a perfectly legitimate tactic in boxing of course, but you wouldn't expect to see it rewarded by the judges at an Olympic Games.
Yup. Agreed
That's a disgrace
Cahill and Donovan saw no issue with result.
Ref was far too weak
How was the Polish girl not deducted another point after so many warnings after the 1st round
How can first round be 9 9 on 2 judges cards?
there was a points deduction for Pole. So two judges had her winning 10-9, but point deduction is 9-9
They had the pole winning 10-9 and she had a point deducted
ANd others 10 8?
It's boxing not Mma
They didn’t even know the Pole got a warning in the first round.
They were clueless.
Judges that scored it 10-9 to Aoife, and then a deduction means it becomes 10-8
I know how scoring works ..
yes. Clueless.
Darren and Kenny saw no issue with result. Did discuss officiating by referee though
Extremely weak ref but still a very disappointing performance from O'Rourke. Very close fight imo that was too scrappy to be confident about it going either way.
Arse is really falling out of these games for us sadly.
so why you asking then with a question mark?
I blame the referee as much as the judges, the facilitated this by failing to deduct another point from the Pole despite multiple cautions…basically her cheating wasn't punished.
He mixed up cautions.. gave cautions for different offences, allowing pole not to get another public warning
This.
Apart from Kelly H, the rest have been poor so far, review of the overall program needed after this? Have we lost our way?
you can blame the ref but not the judges. The pole landed the cleaner blows in the 3rd round and that’s what swayed it. O’Rourke landed very few clean blows throughout
usual overreaction when our boxers get beaten
Judges must have known they were watching an ugly brawler though with a very limited skills set. How many times was Wojick warned for holding…..20 or something?
It's an observation and a legitimate question in my view - Are you saying we've performed well so far these games?
I don't follow the boxing scene ever closely, but it seems like Harrington is the exception rather than the rule.

guys, both were pretty scrappy. Not just the Pole
So you have changed your mind. I watched it again, I can see how the judges could give the third round to the Pole, she was the aggressor and landed some decent punches at the start. In essence the Polish girl imposed her gameplan on Aoife and it was enough to convince the judges. She will be sickened by the fact she has beaten this opponent in all their encounters prior to this one. It's one thing to lose to a better fighter, but to lose to someone you know you had the beating of must be hard to take.
I wouldn't pay too much heed to what that lad posts, he likes to run with the hare and hunt with the hound when it comes to boxing.
Having ten boxers qualify for the games is still a massive overachievement in fairness. Double the number of Cuba, 4 more than GB, 2 more than the US.
Will be a big shame if we don't get more than one medal but think perspective still needed. Olympic medals are very difficult to win.
