Beef & forward stores in Carnaross are €50 -€100 / head up on last Monday yet beef is back to under €5... another example of farming never making an sense...
Any opinions on this lad, 29 months, is it worth trying to feed him now and finish or just let him come in his own time, out of one of my 5 star whiteheads by lapon.
Keep him and kill him under 36 months. Doesn't have to flesh grade properly. Likely to go up a grade if kept on and has all the tools to put on serious weight to compensate for the 12c QA loss. Bullock like him needs 5/6 weeks meal at this time of year.
if you we’re getting short of grass how many kgs a day would you want to feed to cattle to seriously reduce their appetite for grass? Fresian steers I’m feeding
What's the price this week?
Depending on there weight 5-6kgs. However they tjen tend to leave grass behind themselves
I’m thinking of giving these over 6 kgs so they should eat very little grass so
They will however the grass will be dirtier as they will be in a paddock longer and they get fussier o er what they consume
The media says that steers are approx 5 and heifers 5.05 but I've heard price being paid is lower
Personal I think anymore than 4kgs feeding with good grass is uneconomical. Everyone's situation is different.
I might have to change that position this year with grass situation.
that’s why I’m changing myself, I’m short of grass myself
got 5.05 this week for a load.
Are these underage heifers and what breed
Bullocks- mixed load and under and over 30
I got 5:35 flat, O grades mostly, so I think I did ok.
That Is equivlent to about a base of 5.1 and everything being AA and HE and grading O+
Is there a bonus available for HE?
Base is 4.95/5 this week I think.
Ya bonus for HE 8s 10-15c/kg much the same conditions as the AA scheme. One for SH as well but only Nenagh do it I think
From what I hear factories starting to struggle to source enough cattle looks like they will have to start heading north of 5euro a kg and beyond to start getting any stock thst are fit enough
5:10/15 base for bullocks and heifers next week some factories trying for under 5 but the tide has turned on thst now
Dawn paying 20c bonus on Herefords from 0- or better
Source on this?
that’s what they are paying when pushed trying to quote less obviously
An ordinary Joe wont get it what type of numbers supplied by a farmer annually would be getting that price .Would the guy killing 100/ year with a load ready get it
I took 4.90 for AAX bullocks in midlands yesterday. They were booked in last Friday. I contacted agent last Thursday, hoping to get the 4.95 that they were paying last week. I had to wait until the weekly Friday meeting to see what price I would get this week. Agent rang me back this day last week with 4.90, or wait until today to see what they would be next week.
Yes that's the general run of quotes alright.
It would be great to see prices going up but what many lads don't understand is the base price doesn't matter as much as what people think because you are subject to the grid payment system where its so easy to drop a Sub grade and the factory take 18 cent per kg or where some factories insist on Angus being o= or better and you get an o- whether that's an accurate result or not the factory could take approx 40 cent per kg off an individual animal
Of course the base price matters, just like AA/HE/SH bonuses etc it what you wirk off. Its your ability to buy around the grid and work the margin that matter.
You are right bonuses and grading could take or add and make a significant. However it's your ability to gauge what an animal will do over 12-18 months that decides your profitability for most small finishers.
The fact we recieve 10-30c/ kg less than advertised prices has a significant effect on our businesses. In winter finishing its as has high as 50c/kg for smaller finishers compared to contracted finishers.
No sub grade is 18c/kg unless you struggle with FS as well. Yes R- to O+ is 12c/kg because back when it was first introduced tge farmer negotiators wanted R- as opposed to R= be the base price. I often think they lost that. Just like there inability to negotiate bonuses for O- and lower cattle at the time.
