If I’d meant to be rude, I’d have thought of course you’ve seen Olympic opening ceremonies before, you know well they’re about showcasing the host nations art and culture, so you’re just talking the piss, and I’d have ignored you.

Instead I figured I’d best ask, just in case, and explain what the opening ceremony is about. Drag is part of theatre and the whole idea was a theatrical performance. I figured the theme was a Parisian fashion show, cos y’know, the whole catwalk, the dancers and the off-the-wall costumes. I wasn’t looking for any greater significance other than it was to put on a good show.

Then I read the sort of nonsense cribbing about the fact that there were drag performers in the show and I wonder what the big deal is? Seems people are pissed or confused and some people are even going so far as to attempt to interpret things which just weren’t there, all by way of attempting to argue that drag didn’t belong in a theatrical performance. It’s a non-issue being whipped up and made out to be something it isn’t.

The bulk of multinationals in Ireland have DEI policies. The objective (obviously) of DEI policies is to have targets around hiring some minorities. This is generally done by hiring minorities ahead of the best candidates.

99% of those who work in a multinational will recognise the above.

This scene seems to sum up the secular sacrement of a mass. Having just come back from the weekly normal one at the local church, one can be struck by how it reflects the diverse nature of modern Ireland's population, is a community with numerous kids wandering around and that the guest sermon was given by a member of a Catholic charity desribing her work helping marginalised groups then one cannot but compare and contrast the former with the latter.

The opening cermony was sh!te except for the boats bit let's be honest. No comparison to the the London 2012 Olympics, I still remember that, it had a structure you could follow - plus action and humour.

A lot of the French one was just "arty" crap which most of masses would have no interest in.

All the snowflakes not understanding that part of the opening ceremony and getting their knickers in a twist is hilarious.

We all know why they wouldn't dare mock the prophet of the biggest religion in the world.

The irony here of course being that that quote from Timothy is at the origin of drag: Shakespeare’s women for example were played by boys and young men precisely because women were not permitted to speak in public.

It’s one of the reasons why drag is deeply misogynistic. It will stop being so only when drag queens are as frequent as women wearing Henry VIII style codpieces or other exaggerated - preferably offensive - sexual stereotypes of men. Prematurely bald on top with a terrible combover and a long greasy ponytail behind comes to mind. And a rug of fake chest hair with a giant gold medal on top is another.

Haven't seen the interview, don't know if he was asked outright or what his response was, but I wonder what the artistic director meant by this...

Speaking generally, Mr Jolly expanded on the vision for the ceremony's messaging, saying: "We have the right to love who we want. We have the right not to be worshippers. We have a lot of rights and this is what I wanted to convey."
