Yes because pubs and restaurants commonly absorb additional costs.
as they would be the ones returning the cans.
Pubs and restaurants have more to be doing than queuing at a DRS scheme, they will just put the few cans they have into their usual waste.
BlueSkyDreams, you are still dreaming.
I dont doubt that they wont be returning the cans. My point is that they wont pass on the cost of the scheme to the customer.
OK.
It's been widely reported on this thread that McDonald are charging the 15c on the bottle of fruit juice that comes with the happy meal, so if a major multinational isn't absorbing it.....
They provide the bottle to the customer to take away.
🙄.
Its true though.
If the cost is 15c per bottle and they give the bottle to you to take away, why would they not pass on the cost?
Think about how many bottles they sell each day, across the country. Then stack that number over 12 months....would you absorb that cost, if it was your business?
The restaurants have already paid the 15c to the wholesalers when they bought the stock.
So you'd need a separate stream of stock with different barcodes.
I thought it might be possible to sell duty free stock airside but we never got any confirmation whether or not that could be done.
The stock used on board planes has no deposit.
When costs reach their final destination theres only 1 group paying. Anything in between is meaningless.
The only absorbing going on is Re-Turn absorbing deposits. No stats available on that of course.
How many restaurants have you been in that serve plastic bottles to their customers?
Even cans in a pub are rare enough.
Poster was talking about Mcdonalds. Where they do give you the plastic bottle.
You started this branch of the conversation by saying:
You have to pay extra for a can of beer or coke in a restaurant, due to DRS?
I was referring to normal restaurants, not McDonalds.
Me also.
Well unfortunately they dont sell beer in McDonalds in Ireland.
just a couple of hours ago I took my big load of plastic bottles to the Lidl machines Nutgrive, now they work very nicely indeed. The Aldi ones keep printing out receipt after receipt if you’re not quick enough. The Lidl ones wait for your command, also they accepted very dinged bottles. The only thing is you have to go right into the retail area, so if you want to exit without buying something it’s a bit of a fuss getting out, they kind of have you trapped.
No, they dont.
My point was if you are given the plastic bottle when you purchase, the restaurant will likley pass the charge of the DRC on. Since you are receiving the bottle.
Whereas a proper sit down restaurant will likley not give you the physical bottle and so they should not pass on the DRC cost to the customer.
The first example would be relevant to McDonalds, as the customer could return the bottle and get the 15c back.
But McDonalds do charge the extra 15c for the bottle. You can then bring it with you and get your 15c back, if you want.
So, now Im confused what your point is.
Exactly, thats what I am saying.
The poster I was replying to seemed unimpressed that McDonalds would charge the 15c. But as you say, they are giving you the bottle so you can return it and get the money back.
in a proper restaurant, you dont get to keep the bottle so you shouldnt get the 15c charge.
It not just that they are required by law to charge the deposit. Similar to the plastic bag tax. Sh!t there is shops now charging for paper bags
Reading some of the comments on this thread, you really do come away with the impression that there are people out there that will jump through any number of hoops to try and justify getting fucked over.
Baffling stuff.
When you are finished your meal in McDonald's, can you go back up to the counter and get your deposit back?
There seems to be a greater number of people here who are not comfortable with change.
Few people are ever comfortable with being scammed.
I dont eat McDonalds, but unless they have a deposit return machine, no.
You can take it to any other DR machine though.
The details about exemptions are on the Re-turn website. Published a year ago. They make mention of the hospitality industry, with the expectation that many of those businesses would apply to be exempt.

So you finish your meal in a "restaurant", and take your plastic bottle with you and go off on the hunt for a DRS machine to get the 15 cent back. After spending 15+ euros in McDonalds. How many people will actually do that?
Good question.
I was in Germany a few weeks ago and the person in front of me in the queue at a cafe was returning two empty plastic bottles to get the deposit back. Lots of people were just leaving the bottles behind on their trays, though.
Are cafes and restaurants also obliged to return the deposit money here in Ireland?
Thats the same principle for all DRS vendors. You purchase the bottle and if you want the deposit back, you return the bottle to a DRS machine.
How many people do it, i dont know. But there is always a queue at those machines!
Red Bull comes in cans for pubs and others
Few.
But that's the point.
It should be illegal for any restaurant, whether it's Mickey D's or not, to charge the customer this extra nonsense if they aren't going to provide the facility for the customer to recycle the bottle.
