Feels like the right time to start a new thread for next year's gigs.
John Mayer playing the 3Arena on 29 March 2024.
they won’t be on till 9pm I’d say. Just music over PA in lieu of support
Yeah irish times says on stage at 9pm so would make sense. No support is a cop out without it being a long show
sometimes there is logistical and operational reasons why a support doesn’t make sense. One or two of the other iveagh shows had just a dj on the side of stage playing tunes, same for air in trinity
Why are Aiken saying show starts at 8 so? Wouldn't be too happy rushing in to pay 7.50 a pint and hang around for an hour just to listen to music over a PA tbh
You just answered your own question, to sell 7.50 pints.
yeah and so that everyone is in before stsge time. Can’t have 3000 people rocking up at 8:45 for 9pm concert
Phoenix and Air eh? Think I'll just blame the French. If can get 3/4 bands on a lineup in the Academy, can surely have space to have a local band come in to play for 30 mins.
Just wish they'd confirm Phoenix start time but unlikely they will, they want people having pints
Irish Times, who are generally good on this saying 9pm
Can be logistical and operational issues at play. Stage set up not alllowing room for support band, little to no time for headline act to to set up and soundcheck before doors, support acts suggested not to bands liking et etc.
100%. Of little cost to them to schedule a local upcoming band for a pittance. I’m off to Kneecap in Galway tonight and they’ve added Gurriers. The Undertones tomorrow night have Shark School, Pixies in August have NewDad, etc. What a buzz it is for those young bands to play alongside those acts and potentially reach an entirely new audience. Stage set up for Phoenix shouldn’t preclude giving 30 mins to one of the several dozen decent young indie crews around Dublin. Keep the crowd happy too.
All of that makes sense but shouldn’t be an issue with Phoenix. If LCD Soundsystem with their set-up can make room for two support acts then the Versailles crew really could accommodate a local band for 30 mins. At the very least they could stick on a local solo act/duo that would require little to no displacement of their equipment. Your reasons are all solid but I suspect it’s more a case of them just not being bothered about supporting younger artists.
Well it's now been confirmed that it's an 8pm start for Phoenix. €127 for Pearl Jam looking like a bargain right about now
Iveagh stage far smaller than malahide. Sure air didn’t have a band support and the dj could barely even fit on the stage with their stage set up. It’s nothing got to do with them not supporting younger artists. Sometimes in a very rare situation a support slot doesn’t make sense.
Why? were the Phoenix tix expensive?
Phoenix a lesser set up than Air. Those guys were Air’s backing band for a period and able to easily fit on smaller stages alongside Nicolas, Jean-Benoit and all their equipment.
Other acts can easily accommodate support at Iveagh, Trinity, Galway Arts, Collins Barracks, etc. Stages are much of a muchness between those with GIAF and Collins possibly smaller as significantly smaller capacities.
If the Manics and Suede can accommodate each other at Trinity then Phoenix can stick on Thumper or Basht for thirty mins. You’re making excuses for them which don’t hold water.

Doors open at 6.30pm, with Phoenix due on stage at about 8pm.
IT generally just copy and paste the same thing for gigs in a venue and change the act name and times.
I'd say 20:30/20:45-22:30 for Phoenix.
I have seen IT give different and accurate times but 9 seems late with no support. Depends where you want to be in the crowd and if want to get a drink. If want to just get there for the music would leave it no later than 7:15 to be at the gate, based on 8 start time, but that is only a guess based on past experience. If want more then obviously go earlier
60 after fees, but it'll be over by 9.30 and no support. 90 mins at most unless I'm in for a surprise.
I'd compare that unfavourably to about 140 mins with 2 support acts
They're on at 8, been confirmed now
they will be on after 9
The iveagh gardens social media account has confirmed it to be them on stage at 8

well that seems oddly early given Phoenix sets are only 75 minutes or so
**** sake, sun will still be well out after they finish.
If we had a sun.
Yeah it's not like they've a ferry to catch or on a tight timeline to next show, that's over a month away.
Is what it is, just hope the ground is dry. Horrible misty rain in wicklow all day
One of the sh1ttiest things about sh1tty pubic transport, gigs starting and finishing early. Springsteen for example started at 7pm 😆
Probably want to catch a flight after the show, so as to avoid paying Dublin hotel prices…
Cause the venue has 10:30 curfew and Bruce famous 3 hour plus sets. Nothing to do with transport.
He finished at 10pm.
Anyway Croker aside, 10.30pm curfews in places like Iveagh Gardens is fairly pathetic.
He finished after well after 10 in Kilkenny, can’t really remember about Croke Park. Coming on at 7 gives him some wiggle room to add in extra songs if he wants.
Thought it was lush being at a 3 hour gig and being home by midnight personally.
Though it is rubbish in that all these outdoor gigs lose out by not being able to have any sort of light show
Yeah, especially when the artist doesn't seem to know about it in advance. Got screwed over for both Janelle Monáe and The The, with the curfew cutting their sets short 😒
