What is the story with them? Are people actually getting away with having them? its taking the piss in my opinion as are the people with no front number plate.
There is an issue with the legislation regarding number plates and some other issues regarding registration of vehicles.
I can't find a legal reference to it, but it came to light prior to covid.
But the long and short is, summons issued for number plate matters, won't hold water in court.
Edit:
So, the gist of it is.. Numberplates and few other offences were made Ticket-able offences (FCPN) , however, the minister has yet to assign a monetary value to the ticket.
In the normal course of events, a person is to be offered a FCPN if such is availible, and if that isnt paid, then , and only then can a summons be applied for.
The ticket cant be issued, cos .. the law says there is one.. but at the same time there isnt a fine, and you cant get a summons, until an issued ticket hasnt been paid.
Make sense.. it shouldn't.
No
I think there’s more too it. Do they think it hides the fact it’s a ROI car when up north?
I think revenue can fine you up to €5k for an illegal plate.
Registration plate laws fall under VRT legislation so Garda don’t seem to bother enforcing it much. There are penalty points for having a missing registration plate tho.
Once saw a nn L Mnnn car. I was perplexed initially, then thought Why would anyone do that to lovely leitrim?
Is there fixed penalty points for illegal plates?
The font is not illegal, but fake German city and region codes are. There's always people that go full-knobend Fritz plates.
No if you're application is unsuccessful, which it would be if you're trying to reserve a number that someone else has beet you to, you get refunded. It's if you're successful and forget to claim the plate after a "reasonable" amount of time then application is cancelled and you're not eligible for refund. Or at least that's how I read it
For a Grand, (non refundable)?
So if 251-D-4 is gone I'll lose my money?
Citizens Information seems to agree with you. https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel-and-recreation/vehicle-standards/vehicle-registration-numbers/ Was not aware you could reserve a plate number though, that's kind of neat.
Well as long as it has county in Irish, EU flag, hyphens, correct sizing, white background etc. Maybe the exact legislation will disagree with me but its fairly common for a German plate to pass an NCT as long as it meets all of the above. Same with the 4D plates as well as far as I know.
Ah so there is a certain level of customization allowed with reg plates then?
Should? No. But if the owner of the vehicle wants to pay homage to the origins of the vehicle in a similar manor than I guess the same reasoning applies. I don't get what your problem is man.
Most German style plates here are fully legal and pass the NCT. Very few of them will have D instead of IRL. Its the distinct German font on the numbers that people like
so a Seat car should have an E on their plates in Ireland? or a Dacia should have RO?
Well yes it is illegal, and if you disagree with a reason it doesn't make it any less of a reason.
Oh I wasn't arguing that it was any more legal than it is here. Just saying it has nothing to do with the nationality of the owner or what country the car resides in.
They are illegal here so there is no reason to get them on your German made car.
No, in the case of France, there can't be any opening on closed characters by law so the German font is out.
Well the German aesthetic does make sense on German cars, like Audi's, Volkswagen's, BMW's, Mercedes, etc. So yeah I could actually see an Italian or a Frenchman doing something similar, because it has sweet f*ck all to with their nationality.
It's a fad, just like sticking your Irish reg on German font plates is also a fad.
You won't see Spanish or French or Italians drivers sticking German style plates on their cars.
Registering a car in Ireland doesn't make it Irish like it works with people and citizenship. They're German designed and engineered, by German companies. Hence the German plates. Do you get it now?
more common for them to act like they are American but obviously German in the case of German plates. Do they draw German flags on their Adidas trainers? its so stupid using German plates on an Irish car.
What are you on about? They're putting German style plates on German cars….. Audi and Volkswagen are German companies. What does any of this have to do with an individuals nationality?
No, I don't know the kind. You think people who like German style plates are trying to be English or American?
it smacks of inferiority complex having German plates on an Irish car. You know the kind, ashamed to be Irish and act more English, American than Irish.
I've only ever seen them on Audi's and VW's, which are German (technically). I think that's the point.
🤦♂️ German plates on Irish cars are so cringy, it would be like a German guy in Berlin driving around with IRL on his plates.
I haven't seen him around the estate for a month looks like he's your problem now bud 😂
